  • No big balloon drop for Obama at DNC

Everyone will be forced to use their imaginations.

As the self-appointed Last Word Balloon correspondent (and self-appointed job title creator) — I have URGENT news concerning tomorrow's balloon-drop at the Democratic National Convention: IT WILL NOT HAPPEN!

Due to forecasted thunderstorms, President Obama's Thursday night address was moved from the Bank of America Stadium to the Time Warner Cable Arena. Because of the last minute change, there won't be enough time to execute a proper balloon drop.

While we mourn the loss of the 2012 DNC balloon drop — I do have one question — what will happen with all the balloons hanging out in the rafters of the Bank of America Stadium?

  • A lot more than 99 RNC Balloons

     -

Much like exaggerated rhetoric, silly hats, schmoozing, media over-saturation, forced cheering, embarrassing dancing, patriotic music, and cheesy biographical videos — highly-orchestrated balloon drops are synonymous with political conventions.

The balloon drop, which traditionally comes at the conclusion of the presidential nominee's speech, is supposed to be the exclamation point of the convention. Sometimes the drop fails. And sometimes it overtakes legendary NBC News correspondents.

If you are a huge nerd like me and want to know more about how these balloon drops are executed. BuzzFeed interviewed Treb Heining, the balloon artist in charge of tonight's drop. Heining, who started off as a balloon-seller at Disney Land when he was 15-years-old, is no stranger to massive balloon installations. His company has done the balloons for multiple Super Bowls, awards shows and conventions.

  • Awesome Internets: Cookie edition

     -

As the show's self-appointed Cookie Monster correspondent, imagine my delight today when co-worker Nick Ramsey sent me this little gem. It's Mr. Monster himself singing "Share it Maybe" — a parody of Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe."

Yes, yes I know EVERYONE has done their own versions of "Call Me Maybe" —  The Harvard Baseball teamJimmy Fallon, Justin Bieber and even some very talented Corgis. However, I might have to rule this as the greatest version yet.

Not only does Cookie Monster show off some serious vocal ability (check out his "bad..bad..bad" riff at 2:17), he includes health-conscious lyrics such as "let's get skim milk flowing, we'll start this snack going baby." And honestly, who can't relate to REALLY wanting to share someone's cookie. I totally get where he's coming from.
