Actor/comedian/”home crafts expert” Steve Martin endorsed Democrat Bob Kerrey in a gloriously nonsensical web video. Kerrey, both a former governor and U.S. senator, is running for Nebraska’s open Senate seat.
Martin didn't mention Kerrey's name once. Instead, he showed us how to create a "beautiful wad of paper to play with around the house." (Make sure you have a stick of chewing gum, a stapler and a hammer ready.)
Off the side of the screen, we see a hand creep into the frame holding up signs promoting why Kerrey should be reelected. The series of messages read:
“My friend, Bob Kerrey, is running for US Senate in Nebraska…He is a principled man whom I have known and respected for many years…Whether you are a Democrat or Republican he deserves your vote, because …he cares about the people of Nebraska…he considers both sides of every issue to determine what is best…and, he has already served Nebraska successfully as your governor and senator for 16 years…But most of all…He is sane. And his ideas are workable….Please consider Bob Kerrey as a wise and thoughtful choice as your senator from Nebraska…Also, please consider me as your home crafts authority.”
During an appearance on The Last Word in April, Kerrey seemed hopeful of his chances. "I have no idea whether I’m to win the election. I think there’s a good chance that I will," he told MSNBC's Lawrence O’Donnell in the exclusive interview.
A boost from Steve Martin can't hurt (though methinks his "home crafts" might). The latest polls show Kerrey's opponent, Republican Deb Fischer, leading by double digits.

Perhaps "home crafts expert" Steve Martin can show Bob Kerrey how to mold and bake a tea set to use for campaign tea parties in this Tea Party loving state?
Grandpa thinks he made a funny about tea... Of course Romney's Mormon beliefs preclude using either herb...
It's a proven fact, though, that Democrats are funnier than Republicans...

I thought they were "tea baggers" and those tea parties were something else all together entirely. Ha Ha Ha!
The blatantly unprofessional idolatry of the media contributed to Obama’s poor performance. The Times, MSNBC, Huff Post and hundreds of others have lied so much they began believing their own lies. Most important, Obama and close Obama advisors believed them. The lies floated to the surface during the first debate.
You are an absolute deluded fool. The LIES were all from your side. Your birtherism, truthism, jobber-ism shows the case for EDUCATION in this country.
Lawrence? Ezra was great Friday night but we need the link to the REAL Romneycare segment...or where to get that information. Thanks!
The New Yorker Magazine cover had it right: Romney was depicted debating a empty chair behind a podium (devoid of teleprompter, of course); seemed like Clint Eastwood set the stage during his little comic skit during the Republican National Convention.
After months of being vilified as pro-Obama, suddenly the media has crediblity with the TeaBagged crowd...
Go figure...
Praise the Lord and pass the Etch-a-Sketch.
Could be that the media are fickle as all hell, but know a winner when they spot one?
I think the empty chair was for the other Mitt Romney.
The one who has been: calling for a 20% accross the board tax cut that has a cost of $5T over 10yrs whether he wants to admit it or not, deriding Obamacare but now wants to look like his plan will cover pre-existing conditions eventhough it does NOT, claims to love teachers but has exposed "cutting back on gov't" including teachers, now says he likes regulations & wants specifics for mortgage lenders AFTER writing a letter opposing the CFPB who will write the criteria calling them an "unaccountable bureaucracy""w/unprecedented authority of the economy"and saying "job killing regs""invade the freedoms of everyday Americans.not just banks"and"crush the dream & the dreamers", etc...
Go Figure.
This guy wants to cut Social Security when it has not been a problem causing the trillions in debt.
This liar needs to be defeated in November NEBRASKANS!!!! He wants to rob my SS.
Seems to me you didn't watch the debate, Paul, as Obama admitted there isn't much difference in what Romney is proposing and what he would propose for reform necessary now for Social Security, ala the reforms made under the Ronald Reagan-Tip O'Neil negotiations in that entitlement program's fiscal solvency until the brunt of the 25% of our nation's population known as the baby boomer generation begin drawing from the Trust funds over the next 30+ years, and due to the miracles of modern medicine, will far outlive the actuarial factors contained within and draw far more than they individualy or as a group contributed to that trust fund.
I was horrified to hear Bob Kerrey at least three times during the interview brand Social Security as a cause of America's fiscal distress. Is the ex-governor, ex-senator, and ex-president of the New School so profoundly ignorant that he does not know that Social Security is independently-funded and not appropriated by the congress; or is he so hostile to the idea of social insurance or basic security that he has embraced the policy of Republicans toward "character-destroying" relics of the New Deal. Whatever the answer, he is no better than Ben Nelson. Regrettably, his opponent is worse.
I also was astonished that LD allowed to get away with this flat misstatement three times.
Problem is that the congress has been routinely raiding the Trust fund in effect by flim flam accounting justifying spending on other social programs, and that the solvency of the Social Security trust fund is not secured going forward according to our demographics, Alan.
Here's a simple fix. Stop raiding the program. Pay back what they've raided (they have to by law anyway). Raise the ceiling on tax donations so that those salaries above $106,400 also pay Social Security taxes.
Problem solved.
Former Senator Bob Kerrey can propose legislation to cut back Congressional pensions-good and how about making them pay for the perks, like gym membership, but cutting their staffs is stupid.
Those are jobs. Cutting jobs does NOT help create jobs. And while they are the "evil-boogey-man gov't jobs", those staff members do WORK and provide SERVICES to help constituents. They are the only ones in the halls of Congress who are actually helping "we the people" while Reps & Senators are just focused on helping their wealthy corporate donors manipulate the system.
We should also hire more IRS agents to crack down on corporate tax evaders.
Severely disappointed Bob Kerrey did not mention the Defense budget or wasteful "War-on-Terror" spending. SS and Medicare are easily adjusted.
Lawrence let him get away with this absurd omission!
Thanks
