The leader of the "Nuns on the Bus" tour spoke out against Mitt Romney's "47 percent" comments, calling the Republican candidate’s words "shocking" and heart-breaking evidence he's "out-of-touch" with "folks at the margins of our society."
In an interview with Think Progress, frequent Last Word guest, Sister Simone Campbell, executive director of the National Catholic Social Justice Lobby, explained her deep disappointment with Romney:
"I mean, it was shocking to me that a person who says he wants to be the leader of our nation believes that 47 percent of our country is basically lazy or dependent or indolent. That was shocking to me. But then, it broke my heart that he would be so out of touch, that he would so not know the truth of folks at the margins of our society who work so hard. And he obviously doesn’t know that if you work a minimum wage job, if you’re a child care, if you’re providing janitorial services, or if you’re a day laborer, if you work for minimum wage, you’re still in poverty. He has no idea how hard it is at the margins of our society."
A surreptitious recording of Mitt Romney speaking at a private fundraiser shows the Republican candidate ragging on the "47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what" as people "who are dependent upon government."
Campbell and fellow Catholic sisters have been on a crusade to put social issues, and the consequences of Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan's budget, in the spotlight.
In June, "Nuns on the Bus" hit the road on a 15-day pilgrimage through Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia to preach it to Americans.

The Romney/ryon ticket, is sooooooooo wrong on their idea of what america is. The real problem is that all, republicans feel that way too. From their do nothing, congress, to the wars thay are waging on american, is pure stupidity. There has got to be a court in this country, that have enough clout, to stop these kinds of wars. 47% of the population is trying to get ahead, and the top 2%, are trying to keep them down. My guess is that the republicans, are not trying to keep america free, but return to the days of kings, and queens. In 1776 we won our freedom. Now thay are trying to take it away from us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well said. There really needs to be a stop to the stupidity and arrogance of this party. It really is sad to see grown people act this way.
Of course the thrust of Romney's remarks at that fund raiser were in answer to a question as to what his strategy was to win the majority of support of the voters, and Romney answered truthfully that the 47% of individuals with earned income that pay no taxes no INCLUDE those who are in patterns of federal and state assistance, be that Welfare, housing, food stamps, extended unemployment benefits, etc. and that these individuals would not be receptive to his argument for tax reform that cuts tax rates, especially for corporations and small businesses, but also income tax rates, to spur economic growth. Contemporaneous to this statement, Romney had also made a statement in a nationally televised interview that had been widely rebroadcast, that he would not be worried for the working poor and the poor in his campaign...that they have a safety net, and if the safety net needs repair when he is President, he would tend to that. But that his concern would be for the Middle Class, and his economic policies geared to provide them the relief of a renewed economic opportunity for good paying jobs.
I'm sorry the good sister has a "broken heart"; of course she also signaled her allegiance to this Democrat Party President whose policies have done so much to place so many American citizens on some forms of federal assistance, dropped the average family income by $4,300, never had an unemployment number below 8% in every month of his Presidency, and now has the lowest labor participation rate and the lowest number of new small business start-ups (the engine of new employment opportunities) since the 1970s.
So exactly what policies will bring the relief for the unemployed and underemployed and suffering indivduals the good sister's heart breaks for; same-o same-o failed policies of Obama, or the economic revival aimed at the Middle Class of Romney? We have six weeks and three debates ahead of us to make that decision folks.
Mitt Romney, the very ugly American. He is dangerous for America and for the World.
Enjoying your freedoms of expression not available in the Communist Crony Capitalism and rigid government social control of the masses China, Ann Marie from China?
BTW, I just saw Harvard Economist Larry Summers (Obama's former Economics policy guy, and former US Treasury Secretary under Bill Clinton) advocate for a reduction in all marginal tax rates and a broadening of the tax base thru tax reform which trims greatly the layers of deductions and credits and special interest treatment in our multi layered tax code presently, as a means of spurring economic growth and ultimately make much more fair and participator our nations tax collecting processes; exactly the program of reform and economic rejuvenation advocated by Romney/Ryan; this on NBC's business network affiliate, CNBC this AM. But you won't see that on any of the coverage of events in the news on any of the MSNBC news and commentary shows, although they have easy access to the video tape.
Many many Americans do not want this candidate,Mitt Romney.President Obama has intelligence, compassion, and he is an honest dedicated leader. The words to describe Romney can be seen on Loose Lips Sink Ships on you tube by JoAnne Brown..
Empathy, Catholics and the Polls…
(Daniel Burke, Huffpost, Religion News Service, 09/27/2012) President Obama's support among Catholic voters has surged since June, according to a new poll, despite a summer that included the Catholic bishops' religious freedom campaign and the naming of Rep. Paul Ryan, a Catholic, as the GOP's vice-presidential candidate.
On June 17, Obama held a slight edge over Mitt Romney among Catholics (49-47 percent), according to the Pew Research Center. Since then, Obama has surged ahead, and now leads 54-39 percent, according to a Pew poll conducted on Sept. 16.
The Gospels tell us that we are to strive to be Christ-Like to use Christ as our "EXAMPLE" in life and in our decisions. Jesus, did not have an indifference to the poor, the aged or the disenfranchised, quite to the contrary he spoke for them. Jesus did not lie to his people in order to accomplish the greater good, if your message is good there is no reason to lie. I don't know what has happened to the Republican Party but they no longer share my Christian Values and as a Catholic, I will be voting for President Obama, he may not be perfect, but then NO ONE IS, but he does share my Christian Values.
The HOLY SCRIPTURES reference the poor and social justice 300 times. Mitt Romney’s reference to the 47% was anything BUT Christ-like. His on-going deceptive ads; his indifference to the struggles of the American Middle Class and the poor; and his immoral love of money over humanity are troubling to Catholics.
Case in point, Romney newest video release by Mother Jones, in which Romney confirms the mission of Bain Capitol was to “HARVEST” profits from company’s they invested in, not to create a company to grow American Jobs. Money before humanity, a lack of EMPATHY!
His new political ad, where he speaks directly to the camera, is a hollow attempt to gloss over the devastating realization that Mitt Romney cares only about his wealthy friends and not the 47% of Americans which include, seniors, veterans, students, our Troops in Harms way; the working poor, the sick and the poor in spirit. Fool me once shame on Mitt, fool “US” twice shame on “US” for accepting Mitt Romney continuing LIES and DECEPTIONS!
Catholics have a great responsibility to speak for those that are in need and to be Christ-like. Consumed with detestation for abortion, contraception and homosexuality the Republican Party have strayed far away from central core message of Jesus Christ, the Holy Bible, the Gospels and “CHRISTIAN VALUES”, we are our brother’s keeper!:

Matthew 7:1-5“Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye. (Judgment of each other and intolerance of our differences, Races and Beliefs)
James 4:11-12 “Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. Proverbs 12:22 “Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who act faithfully are his delight.” Psalm 101:7”No one who practices deceit shall dwell in my house; no one who utters lies shall continue before my eyes.” (“We Built That” misrepresentation by GOP and “Obama is removing the work requirement to welfare, all the speeches at the convention by GOP leaders, blatant lies not good for the Party of so called “Christian Values”)
You seem to have a good recall of the bible. However did you forget the separation of church and state! Give to Ceasar what is his and Give to God his! Our Christian Values lie in Us as individuals and our responsibility to do God's work! As a Catholic you allow the State to dictate to the Church it's values! Freedom of Religion my dear! This so called nun speaking against the Church and it's beliefs is something the Catholic Church is not condoning! As Christians you are to set an example so that others will believe and do Gods works not expect the Gov't to do it for you! YOU need to be responsible. You have to answer to God not the Gov't.
