Voters in Texas will not have to show photo ID in order to vote in November, following a ruling today by a federal court. A panel of three judges said the law puts "strict, unforgiving burdens on the poor" — particularly minorities.
Republican Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott called the decision "wrong on the law" and says Texas will appeal the ruling to the US Supreme Court.
In response to the decision, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said, "We are pleased with the court's decision to deny preclearance because of these racially discriminatory effects."
While giving a speech at the NAACP convention, Holder referred to the Texas' voter photo ID law a "poll tax."
"Texas has in many ways been at the center of our national debate about voting and civil rights issues...Under the proposed law, concealed handgun licenses would be acceptable forms of photo ID, but student IDs would not," Holder said in July. "Many of those without IDs would have to travel great distances to get them, and some would struggle to pay for the documents they might need to obtain them. We call those poll taxes."
Republican Texas Gov. Rick Perry called Holder's poll-tax remarks an attempt to "inflame passions and incite racial tension."

Obviously, not the only state attempt to secure the validity of the vote in the face of attempts by Democrats to register ineligible voters, such as the campaigns of the Democrat former officials and consultants "Register The Vote" organization, and Obama's old pals, ACORN, trying to enlist non citizens, the underage, felons, and even the dead to register to vote for Barrack Obama's re-election desperate attempt in November.
Let's see if the Supreme Court answers the appeals from both sides of this issue in several states to deal with this question, once and for all.
Right. Democrats have been winning elections in Texas at an astonishing rate...
And clearly Texas is "in play" as one of the critical swing states...
Man, oh man, where do I send the bill for a new case of bullchip filters?
Of course, as was pointed out elsewhere, given population trends, in ten years Texas will be "in play." In fact, if current Latino and African American trends hold, the Republicans will lose their only path to an electoral victory for the presidency if they maintain their current ethnic makeup...
That couldn't be what the American Na-er ALEC is worried about, could it? Naw, of course not...
And the Supreme Court decision will be after the Obama re-election, and well, there's the matter of some obvious vacancies looming...

Ah, shoot, I'm going to tell the story. Happened back when I was still a party animal. There was this really bright African-American friend of mine. Loved the guy, an attorney (alas, he died much too young). We'd been activists in the early 70's, and we were discussing the situation in South Africa (Mandela was still in prison of course).
"You know what's going to happen there," old T. said. "Either we're gonna take over or we're gonna take over."
Whenever there are opposing court rulings on matters of immediate importance the Supreme Court can reach down and take the issues up. Watch for it, Cab Driver.
I guess you missed the people of color speakers at the Republican convention, boycotted by MSNBC, as that didn't support their mission of re-elected Barrack Obama, Cab Driver. But I'm here to tell you that the Hispanic vote in Texas and Arizona is much less liberal than you think. Notably, to find one Hispanic office holder with any creds to address the nation, thay had to go the level of a Mayor. Truth is the Democrat Party doesn't have the strength of diversity in top echelons of leadership positions that the Republican Party does.
Of course, green cards for all and a path to citizenship promises to immigrant, legql and illigal, will buy a few votes for Obama, but then the 14% Unemploymeht rate in their communities, and that Gay marriage thing, and not following thru with his 2008 promise to present a comprehensive Immigration Initiative to Congress in his first year of office (FAILED TO DELIVER) which George Bush had done previously, and the anit-Catholic church muscling though counter moral and religious doctrines over the forcing to provide oral contraceptives down their throats will surely cost Obama and the Democrats votes in these communities.
One of those "people of color" was a young Afro-American lady running for Congress from Utah, Grandpa...
My buddy Will's kid brother kind of put her in the right perspective...

Seen the news about the federal judge in Ohio who just restored early voting privileges? Or the Rolling Stone article that had information obtained under the Freedom of Information Act? That information proves that Romney required federal bailout money to keep Bain afloat...
Casino manage just called...
Ohio's judges didn't restore the black clergies' and Obama campaign's desire to have Sunday before the Tuesday voting date so that late registrations could be distributed in black churches and then motorcades and buses filled with partioners descend on the polling places to vote enmass on the basis of racial affinity, Cab Driver.
