A familiar face popped up as a guest on today's edition of Martin Bashir's eponymous msnbc broadcast. Lawrence joined Martin live from the RNC in Tampa, and the two began their conversation discussing whether tonight's speech by New Jersey's "pugnacious" (to use Martin's description) governor Chris Christie could possibly overshadow Mitt Romney's own speech.
Lawrence told Martin that was absolutely what Gov. Christie hoped to do. He continued saying:
"(Christie) wants to run for president four years from now after Mitt Romney loses, and the Republican nomination's wide open. Christie is the best public speaker that the Republicans have when he is on his game, when he's not busy insulting someone in the audience. But remember Martin, the Romney campaign controls - word-for-word - the text and the length of this speech tonight... and they have to deliberately find little ways to tone down his performance so that he won't just overwhelm and make people forget Romney's coming later in the week."
The two also discussed Christie's parallel with Machiavelli's Prince, and their diverging opinions on the British Royal Family among many other things. The conversation is well worth your time, as is Lawrence's appearance earlier on msnbc's Now with Alex Wagner. You can see that clip by clicking here.

Lawrence Cmon, "Christie depends on Romney losing", you're sounding a lot like a birther. Christie losing 30 pounds in 30 days that I would probably believe.
Huckabee lost the weight. That made him a national player in '08
Actually, it turned out that Lawrence was 1000% right about Chris Christie. He jacked the keynote from Romney and tried to make it his own launching pad for 2016.
The good news is that there was something really flat about the speech. He got nowhere near the lift that then-Senator Obama got in 2004. I know, that's a wicked high bar. Still, I think Christie succeeded in not helping Romney while failing at launching Christie 2016.
LO', The Gov Christie TOP TEN : Three Words That Will Not Be In His Keynoter:
10) Yo! Yo! Yo! 9) Walk for life 8) Table for one 7) The little people 6) Individual Retirement Account 5) Jersey tax haven 4) Body fat content 3) Krispy Christie Creme 2) 2016 presumptive nominee and #1) Who's your Daddy!! END. All above fictiional. Any similarity to real person(s), event(s), and/or place(s) coincidental. Not responsible for errors. Looking forward to outstanding coverage.
Me thinks the "boner" is just a bit tipsy!!! He sounded like a drunken slob trying to give a very stupid speech while slurrrrrrring all his worddddddds.
Pass the bottle, the "boner" need another one!!
Check this out. It is a parody from Le Miserbles - Outstanding. Regarles of your political inclination, it is very clever and the music is worth listening. Great video! Has anyone else in these post seen this prior to today? 8/28/12
The link could not be posted. See if you can find it here: One Term More a Les Miserables Parody
Christy just wants "@!$%#mouth of the Year" recognition. but he has tough competition with the moron Trump
This will take you to the video: 'One Term More': Broadway Community Offers Pro-Obama 'Les Miserables' Parody (VIDEO) It deserves an academy award. It is worth watching just to see how it is done.
Nelson Mandella:
If Romney or Christie ever win, it will be a sad day for America!
I couldn't help but switch from C-Span to see what MSNBC was doing with the Artur Davis speech...the Afro-American Alabama Democrat congressmen who gave a seconding speech for Barrack Obama nomination in 2008, who was at the Republican Convention to address the reasons why he is now endorsing Mitt Romney/Paul Ryan ticket. And I saw that in the bag for Obama network was boycotting coverage of his speech, and putting up some of their hack commentators, such as the shopwarn old racebaiting butt ugly Al Sharpton instead, whining usual song and dance routine about "dog whistles" and "coded" racist language in the Republican speeches, and how "insulted" he is..
That's it for me...I'm sticking with C-Span for unbiased gavel to gavel coverage and CNN for commentary for the rest of this convention and the Democrat Party convention now. No more with this insulting, bottom of the barrel in ratings network that has its editorial head so far up Obama arse that viewer of this crap coverage can't ever see the light of day.
And I suggest everyone else tired of the old race card played constantly by this network boycott its crappy coverage also.
You're free to boycott this site as well. I promise, I won't grieve...
Oh no...I have to much fun here exposing the lame brain leftwingnuts like yourself and other posters like yoy, Cab Driver for the ignorant anti-American values fools you are.
I wouldn't criticize my patriotism, Grandpa. I don't criticize yours. Shoot, if I were an officer in the army and had a suicide to fill, you'd be right near the top of my list.
Your father was an officer in the Army, Cab Driver...but you couldn't measure up to him, so lets not pretend to wrap yourself in the cloak. I didn't attack your patriotism, I attacked your total lack of understanding of the basic economic realities of what a strong America was and will once again be made up of.
Keith, if you're getting paid for the nonsense you post, you may want to use fewer words -- you'll make more money and my middle finger won't hurt so much from scrolling past your tripe.
That'll be news to Pop that he was an officer in the Army. Or any other branch of the armed service. It's taken us years to domesticate him, but he finally agrees that the NRA has been taken over by über right wing nuts... Of course as a businessman, he got an education in the Romney crowd of "trust me" bullshippers...
He did school us in the Service Academy Honor Code, however, Grandpa. I still have scars on a subject you're an expert practitioner of. Your vocabulary on that one is "quibbling."
Looks like Fuzzie has been stalking me with a feeble shot like that. I knew what I was doing when I drew the line at giving him any more IRL stuff... More narcissistic nastiness on his part...
But since he "set the rules," it's pretty clear that not having a father as a role model has left him guessing what "manhood" really means... He has to put other's lights out because his own is so dim...
/sound of 25 watt bulb popping and an old man hollering he's been left in the dark
Cabbie. Your babbling again. .
Anyone besides me following Keith Olbermann on Twitter and the fun he's having pointing out brain deads who don't know the difference between "you're" and "your"?
Our new poster child for the decline in the American Education system just decided to offer us a hands-on lesson....
Some more of his other spelling beauties: coooc (for kook); nute (for Gingrich)
Did you get those kevlar jockey shorts I recommended? I long ago gave up head shots for your kind as ineffective... No brain, no pain...
You posted on a comment to me two months ago that your father was a graduate of West Point and a retired Colonel from his Army Service, Cab Driver. Of course just last week you posted that your really wern'e driving a cab for a living, but you were a "committee of tree PHDs (including a Psychologist). Not belonged to a committee of three, but actualy were a committee of three PHds all rolled into one.
Apparently you either have a problem with the truth, or a problem with your memory, or both. Nothing squares with your grandiose portrayal of your fictional persona, Cab Driver, except that grandiosity which is a tell tale sign of your admitted problem with alcoholism.
No, I said my father attended West Point...
He's a retired rocket scientist... And again, that's all... You're obviously not very bright, because if he'd been an Army colonel, that would've made me a military brat--which several of my best friends are--and I'm not. I'm a lifer here on Planet Utah, same place that gave the world Bernard DeVoto, Wallace Stegner, and Jack Anderson (who was a Mormon I do admire). Oh, and Marriner Eccles, another Mormon whose role in ending the Great Depression you ignored in rush to write your own revisionist history.
You're the one with the problem with the truth, Fuzz-for-Brains... You should take it up with those voices in your head.
Give me back the bullet, Barney...
/Andy Griffith voice off
People who invent their own reality and live in it have recurrent problems with the rest of the human race. It's similar to being drunk all the time, but I left that malady behind decades ago.
And for our hillbilly Hemi, bad news from Florida...
http://livewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/entry/federal-judge-will-permanently-remove-florida-voter-registration
Cabbie,
As per your request, here is how to put another poster on "ignore".
1. Click on their name link (not their avatar)
2. On their "home page" on the right you will find their Profile box.
3. Click on "Ignore this author".
All posts of that "author" will now appear just as a "collapsed" post. The poster's name will still be visible and can be expanded (not sure why you would want to). As November approaches, we can expect the size of "blunder" of trolls to increase making useful discussion more difficult. I could see "Troll-less Tuesdays" on the menu. This worked fine yesterday, today though hemi is back - could be a "cookie" problem - hey he's gone again - I will look no further.
Christie - interesting for Romney to have a "supporter" who wants to make him a 1 term president.
Thanks; there are two messages for you at our pre-arranged drop locations...
I hope hemi doesn't get his feelings hurt about being ignored... He reminds me of a kid I taught back in the rehab once...
The whole crew at MSNBC, Sharpton, Matthews, O'Donnell, Schultz, Maddow, Harris Perry, Dysen, all of them a bunch of whiners and "racebaiters". It amazing that MSNBC still is on the air with the morons I mentioned. All they talk about is the lie's that the Republicans come out with, it gets old. They need to look in the mirror and see the real liers. Matthews made a complete ass of himself the other morning on the Morning Joe show, if I were Joe I would have ask Matthews to act like a ass on your show, not mine. Matthews must think he is a Olberman look a like.
Hate to inform you of the flaw in your theory, Adam, but the "ignore this author option" only means that the post from me wouldn't appear on the Cab Drivers page only when he opens a post topic I commented on. And its the Cab Drivers obsession with my posting of cogent, fact and figured based arguments and discussions.
You may remember when you tried several months ago to act as intermediary between us, I informed you that when I first was posting on this blog, the Cab Driver announced that he was going to chase me off it "with a display of his superior intellect". LOL! And hence, to this day, he stalks me with inane comments that usually have not a fact or figure in them, other than the occasional reference to one of his bizzare internet poisioning ultra liberal blogs he apparently is a bottom dwellin denizen of!
So if he takes your advice, Adam, hopefully that will relieve me of having to flag his lamebrain attempts at rejoinders to my arguments with "OF NO VALUE", as he won't be making them anymore.
Keith,
My comment to Cabbie was unrelated to your postings - rather it was a response to a question posed on another blog. I would find it extremely unlikely that he would set you to ignore - must be a "Where there's Crosby there must be Hope" sort of thing. I don't even pretend to understand. Setting 392 Hemi to ignore, has however freed up a lot of valuable screen space with no downside.
Adam_Selene
There he goes again. What I said was I'd make intellectual roadkill and serve it up...
Damn that 43, can't say "Mission accomplished" without evoking some guffaws...
French maybe?
Fait accompli?
Grandpa could certain ignore me, but it would mess with his messiah complex if he did...
Huckabee managed to do it, was a player for a while in '08
SL Cabbie...
You can always tell when Keith thinks he's put out a zinger. Unfortunately for him, he only ends up resembling the perception of a Baby Ruth at the bottom of a public pool.
And I'm sure you'd agree, Keith...'96, '98 and '02 weren't very good years for you, were they? I'm of course referring to something called Appeal Nos. "01A03539" and "01A03848" and their respective hearings "160-97-8559x" and "160-A0-8250x". Pretty weak arguments to begin with but alas Keith, you seem to have made a small, but well-documented, career out of being a habitual whiner (please don't mistake that word for winner...there's a vast difference).
Now Cabbie...can you honestly say you wouldn't miss all the demonstrations of his self-inflicted feebleness?
Forget Mitt, Ryan and the Krispy Kreme dude...I think Keith's the perfect poster boy for the GOP.
The "Krispy Kreme" dude has a different meaning to me; I had to think about that one for a minute; there's a tubby Mormon apologist--reminds me a lot of Grandpa psychologically, only a little brighter--with a fondness for circular pastries.
He's out of circulation right now (I think he was drawing too much attention to issues LDS, Inc. didn't want a light shining on), but I hung a nickname on him a dozen years ago he never could shed.
As for any of Fuzzie's personal troubles, well, he should've followed some advice I heard years ago about getting himself a disguise if he doesn't want information used as gelding tools. The Internet permits that. Given his penchant for personal attacks, he's setting himself up for a smackdown. I don't have to operate that way, but he brings his own karma on himself. Others probably don't have my restraint.
This thing's over for R&R, we're into the mopping up phase, and what I hope will happen is some lessons will be learned so some real progress can be made. That will require statesmen, not politicians.
I really am a "reluctant comedian" at times because it requires a bit of cynicism and ruthlessness that masks my essential optimism.
The Cold War is over; gazillionaires don't need gazillions to be far more comfortable than either you or I, and the impact of our species on the planet still needs to be mitigated and scaled back to sustainable levels. The United States could become super-wealthy once again, perhaps by becoming a colonial empire (I fear China has ambitions in that direction, but its population makes that unwieldy for now because it cannot even feed itself yet), or our country could go bankrupt, and our posterity would still face those challenges. They might then rightfully hold us accountable for the legacy we left them.
Miss him? No more than I miss the camaraderie of the old bar scene. There's an artificial quality that is practically cartoonish...
In that respect, he, Romney, Ryan, and Christie all have interchangeable roles. Little more than two-dimensional villains in a melodrama...
BTW, there's an Ozark Hillbilly with decided Birch Society tendencies who's taken to passing gas over on Matthews... Same silly talking oinks® even...
Just another excuse for me not to keep up with my housework...
I watched a fascinating panel discussion on C-Span yesterday made up of pollsters. Seems that there was unanimous agreement that the majority of voters describe themselves as being slightly conservative. And that if one followed up with the correct question, "where do you think Mr. Romney and President Obama fall on the political spectrum?" the answers come back "President Obama-liberal, Mr. Romney-slightly conservative. In other words, Mitt Romney is perceived by the electorate to be right where the majority say they are. And that bears watching as the real campaign now goes forward.
This just in: Obama is on a three day youth voter rally on College Campuses swing, decidedly muted it appears from the heydays of his 2008 primary and election campaigns. Seems the youth vote is polling as 13% less than what he accomplisheed with his "hope and change" vapid rally message, and the 'we are the people we have been waiting for", and "transforming America" one liners. And there is no way he can get that youthful adulation back, after his four years of underperfoming on his promises, and his moribund economy without the jobs he promised them at the ends of their years in college. And his tarnished "non-transformational politician" image after his spring and summer campaign of personal destruction he ran against Mitt Romney.
And to make things worse, seems like the folks in charge of scheduling the Democrat Party national convention have his making his all important re-election nomination acceptance speech on Thursday, September 6th, he is going to running head to head on primetime TV coverage with Thursday Night Professional Football and the MTV Live Music Video Awards Show. Maybe Obama can advertise that he's going to sing a little more cover of Al Green for them? LOL!
Uh-huh. Sure, hon. The Republicans can't fix the "women gap" can't fix the "latino gap" and now that they've so foolishly put Paul Ryan on the ticket, they're going to lose Florida.
Best to stop grumbling about this round and start getting your whines ready for 2016, dear. Oh, but nevermind Christie - he's not going to play well as a presidential candidate. Nobody wants Chris Christie in their face every day for a year of campaigning, let alone for four years as president.
Note that our wannabe snark neglects to mention the U.S. Open Tennis tournament going on right now while the "Glad-we-re-white; sorry-you're-not" crowd is in Florida.
What, race-baiting? Moi?
Check this one out...
http://thehill.com/conventions-2012/gop-convention-tampa/246353-two-convention-attendees-removed-for-taunting-black-cameraman
Me, I'm going to strive for a bit of objectivity and note that Cowboy fans were not going to be watching the Dems, and the tennis crowd probably isn't that interested in Republican doings...
Glad there were a couple of poker shows on last night, of course...
Oh good grief, I hadn't seen the story about that cameraman. Not surprising but just godawful. Why do they allow these backwards, racist, breathtakingly ignorant people to represent them at their convention? I know, I know, they desperately need their votes but my god, who could stand to be in the hall with them?
I don't really think it matters what other television programs are on during the conventions. They get so little coverage on the networks and a lot of people only catch bits and pieces in soundbites or in clips online these days.
What matters, in my opinion, is the tone and the way voters end up feeling about the candidates. The tone of the RNC has - thus far - not been appealing. Ann Romney was perfectly fine but not outstanding in any way. Christie was selfish, mean and actually sort of flat. He's better off the cuff.
I don't think they can pull off Romney 37.0. Their effort to re-invent him isn't working and it won't work. People who know him say he's a heck of a nice guy and they really, really like him. That doesn't come across at all for him as a candidate. More than anything else, I think his stiffness and lack of charm or warmth is what will ultimately seal his loss in this election.
@ dbxvillen....
Why?
I think they're a little short of volunteers...
That rumor started by fired from MSNBC for irresponsible inflamatory comments by David Shuster, racde baiting Chris Mathews former understudy on Twitter has yet to be commented on by CNN, which the rumor had said was the camerawoman supposexly involved. Only liberal blogs like Huffington Post and The Daily Cos, two of the Cab Driver's favorite anti-Republican purveyors of rumors and untruths, and apparently mentioned by The Hill.
Let's wait for coorboration from CNN before we adding to the racebaiting agenda of this network.
Acting like a whiner again, eh Keith? Like I said, the perfect poster boy for the right wing. Just take a few deep breaths and concentrate on the keys you want to hit, right after you look up how to spell the word in question. Really, it isn't hard so even you should be able to do that.
Cabbie...is there a grammar class taught at a lower level than elementary school?
You still can't fix stupid...
One thing I noticed was that there was not enough Lawrence in the MSNBC coverage tonight.
He may prefer it on the convention floor but as much as I enjoy the rest of the team, I missed his commentary at the table.
Lawerence, like Chris Mathews and Rachal Meadow and Al Sharpton, are all in their own ways one trick ponys....a little of each of them goes a long way.
I disagree, I think Matthews, Maddow, Shultz, Sharpton and certainly Lawrence O'Donnell have broad bases of political knowledge and experience that they bring to the table. I watch them every day and have yet to find any truth in what you're saying here.
Of course, the fact that you can't spell most of their names correctly shows that you don't actually know even the most basic thing about them.
Dems must get feet on the ground to push back against this issue! Florida is a very winnable this election cycle and all it takes is one vote to make the difference. In addition, administratively, the Justice Department has ruled appropriately and reversed many of the laws in the 5 counties under the Voting Rights Act preclearance clause. The final step that is needed is a federal injunction or complete suspension of the state's law so close to a general election cycle. There should be no doubt from either a judicial prespective or the average individual on why this and similar measures have been done throughout the country. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! Its time to show the GOP that money and lies is not enough to win an election! The keyword in the United States of America is UNITED! Intolerance and indifference are ways of the past and those who wish to maintain that type of thinking need to be held accountable and denied access to ANY elected office!
Florida rolled that law out 6 months before the election, and the federal courts have been ruling supportively to voter validation laws, so good luck with that, Ben.
It doesn't matter how much Republicans try to suppress the vote, Florida will go to President Obama in November. Seniors won't accept the Romney/Ryan voucher plan, nor any of their other plans, for Medicare.
Without Florida Romney loses the election. End of story.
Repubicans are not supressing the vote, they are protecting the integity of the vote, making sure only recongizable duly registered in time American citizens eligible to vote will have their votes counted in this election.
Yep...suppression, pure and simple. Even the OH R's had to admit that they couldn't document any instances of voter fraud when they went before the judge. They were shamed into removing their decree about extended the voting hours in Republican majority districts while striving to reduce the voting hours in those few districts that voted blue last time around.
Tilting at a windmill that isn't there...Some Republicans just aren't happy with a level playing field.
Troglodytes like Keith and most of the red states R governors and legislators, along with Mitt/Paul, would breathe a whole lot easier if the vote was restricted only to middle-aged white men...no women, no minorities, no one under 55.
I find it quite interesting that ALL these integrity efforts are occuring in THIS election cycle! Yet many federal judges are pushing back from Texas to even Florida with a federal judge just yesterday issuing a permanent injunction against the voter registration law.
The whole first night of the convention was a cavalcade of GOP nonsense. From the parade of plastic Barbie dolls sucking up after Ken-AKA-Mitt; to the outsized presence of Christie, who spoke more about himself and his mom (Oedipus complex?) than he did about Romney; to the pans of the crowd, who were (still!) as lily-white as ever; the whole thing was an effing joke about what modern-day Republicans have become.
Best lie of the evening? Kelly Ayotte, saying that Barack Obama "has never even run a lemonade stand." No, Ayotte, he's just a Harvard Law School grad, public citizen, and successful pol who got himself elected President of the free world. What have you done, Kelly?
Every time I see a Republican event, I see a circus, with an endless parade of hater-clowns piling out of a little car.
Last night was no exception.
Yea sure thing, he'll also be rated the most destructive President toward a National Economy. Print that money honey. Don't go there with that horse crap. Why is he hanging around self proclaimed socialist. During his pot smoking days.
EWO, this new guy showed up two days ago on Matthews, and yeah, I gave him both of those shiners he's sporting...
He's got some old John Birch Society/Joe McCarthy playbooks he's trotting out, but he wouldn't do my history assignments on the Hollywood Black list and doesn't believe the Birchers were convinced the Beatles were part of the Commie plan to take over.
Obama claims to be a Constitutional Law Scholar, but he seems to be confused about that document as in desperation to pander to special interest groups he has been violating the Constitution of the United States with Executive fiats on such things as forcing the Catholic Church to provide insurance coverage for contraceptives, surgical sterilization, abortions, and to make an end run around Congress to put into effect amnesty for illegal immigrants under 30 years of age, and to provide states waivers to suspend the the work or education or job training in the Welfare to Work legislation of 1996. All simply for politi all gain as he can't get traction in the polls due to his failures of the past four years.
And he never ran a lemonade stand.
I think you should go back to running *your* lemonade stand, dear. This "talking politics" thing just isn't going to work out for you.
Grandpa has gone back to his favorite pastime, which is punching the crap out of his homemade strawmen... When he hasn't downloaded them from the FAUX noise crowd...
Probably helps with his frustration; I'd do it for my road rage, but fortunately there are a few here who offer me an outlet...
Yep...I remember the early days of the hemi...one of the poorest performance engines around for a few years. Every time they went to the track, they blew something.
Seems like that tradition is still being practiced by some...plink...bang...thud...
Lawrence O'Donnell, you should be ashamed of yourself for your irresponsible comments this afternoon. I am in shock at your attempts to incite racism with your ignorant and careless comments which more than suggest that a reference to our President playing golf is a racially charged comment actually comparing the President to Tiger Woods. How absurd. You must be the bigot to even think of that! Race and skin color do not even matter to most Americans. I won't be watching your network. Professionalism lost at MSNBC.
Race baiting is the editorial policy of this bottom of the barrel in ratings cable network, Educated Voter. They are directly supporting the Obama campaign for re-election that relies on obtaining the votes from divisions in society caused by their appeals to racial anger, ethnic victimhood, economic status jealousy, and pandering to buy young women's votes with offers of co-pay free contraception, surgiclal sterialization, and abortion coverage in the ObamCare designed one size fits all Health insurance policies forced upon the states, the employers, the Churches.
Apparently O'Donnel has done an about face, as he now states that Paul Ryan, VP choice on the Republican Party would be next in line to run for the office of president, and not Christie.
But here is the real question you should be asking, Lawrence...would it be wiser of Bill Clinton to sit this election campaign out, so that Hillary who is already planning on leaving this failed administration to begin her run for the 2016 Democrat Party nomination would benefit from an Obama loss, or do his loyal best to the Democrat Party to keep this disasterous amateur Barrack Obama in office for another tortured 4 years, therefore probably assuring that the nation's voters would sweep in a total change Republican ticket and both houses of Congress in 2016 to try to pick up the pieces of a broke and broken nation?
