Another national Republican candidate caused controversy for his remarks on rape. In the Rewrite, MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell explains how these comments really show Republicans' plans for policy on women's health issues.
Rewriting Republican policy on rape

Tue Aug 28, 2012 1:21 AM EDT

Unlike Romney, here is a joke.
The Republicans are against women's reproductive rights because Republicans were not born. They were all made of clay, by God, in the form that you see them today.
hahaha
I want to add that I think that the importance of God and faith is that they bring people comfort.
I believe in evolution, and you can connect the dots on what that means with how much weight I put in religion, but I don't think that it's necessary to try to take away the comfort that people take from their religion, even if religion does not describe a 'literal' truth.
The one of the angles on the Republican Party’s position regarding abortion and rape that Lawrence (and no one in the media for that matter) seems to be exploring is the issue of paternal rights. What I mean by this is that the Republicans stated through their “Human Life Amendment” demand that a woman must carry each and every pregnancy to term regardless of conception, yet no where in that platform (to my knowledge) do the Republican make any demands to strip the father/rapist of their parental rights, nor do they address the rights of grandparents of the offenders. Therefore logically if their platform were (god help us) to become law and enforced, then the fathers of those 32 thousand unwanted pregnancies as a result of rape each year, would, regardless of the alleged offenders legal status, be able to assert all sorts of influence over the life of their victims, such as where they live, what schools these children would be going to, what religious environment these children would be raise in, visitation right for the offenders parents etc. etc. etc. While I am certain the Obama team is winning this debated with women generally, simply on the stunning stupidity of the Republican’s stated Party Policy, but by exploring and discussing the logical aftermath of the effects of this lunacy might help to widen the debate beyond the concerns of just women alone and more into the consciousness of conservative husbands and parents of these potentially twice victimized women.
$6 Trillion of deficit spending by the Obama Administration in his term of office, taking the national debt up from $5.5 Trillion at the end of the Clinton Admininistration, from the $4.5 Trilion addeed by 8 years of the George Bush Administration to $10 Trillion, to now $16 Trillion before Labor Day, 2012. And the majority of that money in the last 4 years has been spent to finance short term spending on social programs. Money borrowed from the Chinese, the Middle -Easterners, the Japanese, the Brits, the Germans, and the Danes. That's over 40 cents of every dollar spent by the federal government, and every budget for the past 3 years that Obama has presented shows that course of deficit spending to continue for 10 years, mounting the debt to unsustainable levels of 50c of every dollar spent on interest, and drawing to the point that $500 billion of our tax revenues will be spent just to pay the interest on the national debt (the last two budgets didn't receive a single vote in Congress of approvl, but thanks to the Democrat control of the Senate, the House of Representatives passed budgets were not taken up by that body, so we operated without a budget, and the deficit spending just kept keeping on!).
Ultimately, that's all debt and interest payments on the debt that will be passed to our children and grandchildren, and will severely impact their ability to have anything other than a stagnant economy and rising cost of living due to inflation, similar to what we experienced in the failed president Jimmy Carter years, and that it is apparent that we are slipping into today with this failed President, Barrack Obama.
Somewhere we have to start trimming this deficit spending...and one place that is high on the list of places to trim is the federal dollars going to support abortion, (even though according to the Henry Hyde amendment to appropriations procedures, we are not supposed to be spending federal dollars for abortions. Lets leave the financing of that very seldom necessary procedure in our society to charitable donations made by those who support abortion. The majority of people in this country are Pro-Life, not pro- abortion. The majority of women in our society are Pro-Life, not pro-abortion. We don't know what the what the majority of our children and grandchildren might think on this issue, but we do know that it not fair to them to saddle them with the ultimate payment of the portion of the national debt that is and will be spent for abortion procedure we are running up on them, only to hand it off to them for payment, and the consequences to their lives of that debt.
And let's end this hysteria over Right to Life planks, and attempts to link that to one bizzare and offensive statement made by a congressman running for the Senate in Bible Belt Missouri. If one truely believes in abortion on demand as a "right" of any woman in all cases, than contribute one's own money to be used for that purpose. And vote for the candidate of the Political Party that profess that, and even might have a Plank in their Party Platform that speaks to that. And let's concentrate instead on the mounting, hamstringing national debt that is sapping so much of our futures, and our economy's vitality, and the futures and economies of our children and grandchildren who will inherit this short sighted debt.
Man, I'm in trouble. I take a look at what Grandpa--who's claiming a college degree in English no less--does to the English language. Check out that first sentence, which isn't a sentence, but rather a fragment. Seriously, Fuzz-for-Brains, I learned about the "noun verb" requirements in fifth grade...
Anyway, I want to call what he does "rape," but I can't these days even though it's akin to it. The lady Valkyrie crowd would geld me. Same thing happens with his assaults on logic and reason.
Anybody got any suggestion? I'll throw in a free cab ride and historical tour for some really good ones...
Anyway, I notice he's not suggesting we should return the 1% crowd's tax levels to pre-Bush 43 rates even though that would add to federal coffers. I don't know how much, but every little bit would help. I'm not going to try to crunch the numbers, and Grandpa will simply lie about them, anyway, but it is worth noting.
And certainly if they had less money they would be less inclined to spend it underwriting the caterwauling of the Humbaugh® and Hannity crowd...
Once again, you're trying to deflect the theme of the discussion of the article, Keith. And it appears that yet again, you've plagiarized another authors work. The "tell" that you did that is readily visible, but I don't think you can figure out what it is.
You have a certain "stick-to-it"-ness about it, but you really aren't very proficient at that tactic. Poor, actually.
SL Cabbie: I've suggested Keith go back and take an elementary or middle school class in English grammar and spelling, but I think he's become one with his keyboard. If he wants to continue to look utterly deficient in his knowledge and use of the mother tongue, well, let him. I'd suggested the elementary class as a better fit...wouldn't want him over his head on day one, would we?
Neither one of you left wingnuts have the ability to even try to refute my arguments, apparently.
Eyes Wide Shut...you persist in your paranoia that someone like myself with a mind of their own must be posting "talking points" provided to them. I'm me. Google me! Look into my background...I've expained it all to you several times before on other post topics.
As to the typos, there is so much to set straight I can't take the time to proof read everything that my fingers have failed me at with double key strikes and the such. But as to the quit on his education program Cab Driver, your english grammar lesson for the day was posted below.
Yes, his royal hiney-ness can't be bothered with ordinary courtesy even though it's not typos we're hollering about...
He's too caught up in his own self-inflicted self-importance...
Elementary school, EWO? I agree, which was why I thought of him with that "Allen West needs a time out" clip...
Here's another possibility...
http://files.abovetopsecret.com/files/img/to4fd0e121.jpg
Your #3 post...still isn't your original work, Keith, so they aren't "your" arguments. I never said "talking points", only that you weren't the original author of the piece you posted.
Again with the attempt at deflection and distraction, tsk, tsk, tsk...isn't working for you at all, soprano-boy.
You should slow down a bit Keith...being in such an overt hurry to vent your spleen that you can't take the time to use simple basic correct English grammar and spelling when posting isn't winning you any kudos...never will. What it DOES do is make you look foolish...every time.
So...just how are things at the corner of Park and...the house looks like it could use a new coat of paint. You don't do well when challenging the VA, do you? Something about being "pushed off a curb"?
Before you issue a challenge, such as you did, you might want to consider the very plausible and quite probable fact that the person may have more oars in the water than you do.
I rest my case...
Cabbie...do you think that's enough to get the job done?
Aluminum siding, and I don't know what sattelite picture you are looking at that shows the need for a paint job, but I suggest you are deceived, Eyes Wide Shut.
Your accusation that I plagerized another writer would be more authentic if you had the ability to name that writer, wouldn't it Eyes Wide Shut...otherwise it is simply the kind of empty, desperate attempt to refute without arguing against the facts provided in my argumehts that you and the Cab Driver particularly engage in.
Both of you seem to have adopted an obsession with my comments here, and show up regularly in tandem now, with inane comments that don't adress the specifics of my statements. How long before the rest of the blog readers start flagging your posts as of no value as some are doing now?
I do believe our bully boy is running scared and trying to threaten us...
Isaac Asimov: Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent...
Been waiting years to use that one...
Feel free to hang on to that self-centeredness, even if you don't understand the psychological implications of obbessive stuff, Grandpa. I'm doing double duty however, and I just served up some fried Ozark Hillbilly troll elsewhere... Guy probably isn't as tough and grisly as you are, however...
Awww...sounds like our little Keith is a bit miffed. (Yawn)
Hmmm...yes, I suppose it could be aluminum siding, my source must have been created on a grey or cloudy day...lots of flat light and all...but it's still looking a bit dingy. Perhaps you could hose it off once in a while. If you cared more for the appearance of your residence, and spent less time in it's basement, I'm sure your neighbors would be happy, perhaps you too. Your little white fence is rather cute.
By that, do you mean you...a party of one? Another statement you can "prove", can you?
If I needed any further proof than what I already know about your (chortle) "style", I 'spose I could spend time looking for the original author based on...no, no, no hints for you, not that you could connect the dots anyway. But that effort isn't needed, as you invariably give it away every time you do that. You, despite all your mental gymnastics, haven't figured it out yet, have you? Like I said, they really aren't your arguments...they actually belong to the author...not the plagiarizer of same. Besides, all you really ever offer are your opinions.
An obsession? Doubtful. But I'll never understand how you ever got out of elementary school with your lack of skill concerning our language. Are the schools there so prone to ignore failure of such magnitude?
You're still missing a few oars, soprano-boy...
My mother had two mis-carriages before I was born. Does that make her a double murderer under the Ryan-Akin person hood amendment? What happens when a woman is unable to conceive because her body doesn't allow the egg to adhere to the womb after conception -- is the government going to step in and prevent her from having sex, because if she conceives, she would then be a murderer? What is the estimated increase in prison population which would be caused by this issue, and where are the GOP going to get funding for the additional prison space? Finally, if Ryan is such a good practicing catholic, why only 2 kids? I would expect at least 5 like the Romney's. Did Ryan ever use a condom? Were they using the rythm (sp) method? Does that correspond to the Popes edicts? Gods wishes to multiply?
My first sentence: "spending", a noun qualified by the adjective "deficit"; "taking", a verb, and modified by the predicate adjective of the clause of "national debt up...to $16 Trillion by Labor Day, 2012". Better go back and get a remedial course in high school grammar, Cab Driver seeing you can't read and understand the English language.
jim: take your tortured philosophical questions to a clergyman or a psychologist for your answers; they are juvenile, and not worthy of any further comment!
Jim,
The state legislature in Utah attempted to make a miscarriage a possible criminal offense using a legal standard of "reckless behavior". What exactly would be "reckless behavior" - I'm not sure - neither were the legislators - but they apparently assumed that the courts would recognize it when they saw it. It appears "reckless behavior" could be actions such as falling or not using a seat belt.
Googling "Utah and miscarriage" will give you many links - here is one to start with:
http://www.rhrealitycheck.org/blog/2010/02/19/utah-passes-bill-that-charges-women-for-illegal-abortion-or-miscarriage
How about bungee jumping in your third trimester?
I gave you credit for the noun, Grandpa. It was the verb that was missing...
Bungee jumping - probably. While the bill was sent to the Governor, it was withdrawn by its sponsor before the Governor made any decision. The version that was passed requires the woman to "intentionally induce her miscarriage" to be liable for prosecution. Again, it appears that the Utah courts will decide what qualifies as an "intentionally induced" miscarriage.
Ryan looks like a serial rapist. Perhaps he has that background to define this stuff.
Flagged as inflamatory. Back under your rock, bug man.
Ryan, Aiken and their ilk are trying to take the country back to the days when women were accused of being witches and paranoid men believed they were sneaking out during the night to have sex with Incubus. Not very different today, except the women will be prosecuted by the courts in stead of burned at the stake, though in both cases they amount to a church trial. Check out new posts on the Ryan-Romney “Culture of Life” Hypocricy, and Romney’s Cayman Tax Evasion, at Romnification.org
John and Travis: get back under the rocks you lame brains crawled out from under before someone comes along a squashes you empty heads with a well placed boot. Using the web as an outlet for you insane comments is something that imposes on thinking adults, and should be flagged, which they are now.
You two don't need to worry about Grandpa's boot; he broke his ankle trying to kick the bumper of the ol' police interceptor...
That was after he first tried to head butt it...
Poor little ol' Keith...spending so much of your time in front of a mirror again, aren't you?
I always thought legitimate rape was when timber companies clear-cut forests after paying an obscenely cheap price for their federal land lease.
I think I like what you're saying here (as opposed to your last effort), but the syntax is a little awkward.
Certainly unmolested natural landscapes are more worthy of "elevation" than one of the several languages of the species that is decimating them.
Same with the grazing permits out west here... They brought back some wolves from Canada to help restore the ecosystem, and the damn ranchers aren't even waiting to see their birth certificates before shooting them.

I don't share his (Mitts) undefined vision and without an
understanding of "HOW" he plans to make these accomplishments, I just
don't Trust that he will do what he says because his daily Stand changes day by
day depending on his audience. Don't just say what you will or can do but how
you will do it. The "Just Trust Me" mentality just is not working for
me because of his Flip-Flop stands on most issues and his failure to maintain
transparency throughout his campaign. So far he has given the people Nothing
but rhetoric.
I believe that the Latino's, Women, LGBT's, Middleclass and
Poor will remember in November his campaign gaffe's (truth's) on his position
and how he really feel about the 98% that make this world function.
In addition his ignorance or lack of support against Voter Suppression
laws is unfounded and shows a disinterest in the issue.
Seems everybody was ready to believe that Obama was the great reformer in 2008, the man that was going to make good on "hope and change", without either specifics on what he would do if elected to the presidency, or the background to say he could do anything other than make pretty speeches. And that is why he failed! Notably, he even stopped making the speeches once his failures were evidend.
Stay tuned to the Romney/Ryan campaign...its really just beginning with this National Republican Party Convention. But we do have Obama's 4 year record of failure to measure against. And what Romney/Ryan individual successes and attributes are and their specifics on what they will do once in office to learn about over the next 70 days.
This just in: as the Republicans begin their National Covention in earnest today, President Obama is off on a three day campaign swing on college campuses trying to exite and rally the youth vote that was so instrumental to his "Hope and Change" election of 2008, which has turned into a big yawn from this group of voters after 4 years of failure to deliver on his promises, and his displaying his feet of clay as just another jiving politician that talks a good game, but fails to deliver. To make thing worse for Obama though, on the third day of his Democrat Party Convention, September 6th, as he delivers his coronation acceptance speech, the supposed Hallmark event of his reelection bid, he will run afoul of competition for a big share of the youth viewing audience due to Thursday Night Football, and the Live MTV Music Video Awards. Couldn't happen to a nicer, although incompetant, guy.
This just in...Romney says he'll release all his tax returns!
Just as soon as he walks out of the convention center after the wind has reached a minimum of 35+ mph.
Word has it he's hired Keith Longey to retrieve all of them before anybody from the opposition can piece them together.
Be sure and wear your little floaties, soprano-boy...
Flagged as of no value, as usual, Eyes Wide Shut!
Oh double ouch! I must have struck a nerve...again.
I love to see how all these white male Republican politicians are now having periods. Like Paul Ryan, who thinks rape is just another "method of conception" said just the other day: "Rape is Rape, Period" And the GOP Senate candidate in Pennsylvania, Tom Smith, who thinks rape is just like any other out of wedlock pregnancy: "I'm pro-life, Period." I don't know if these guys are just having their first periods. They're pretty old. Maybe someone could have "the talk" with them? How about their wives?
Keith, thank you for your juvenile response. Why should I go to a witch doctor/clergy for answers?
The miscarriage question is a valid question in regards to the person-hood amendment.
The how are you going to pay for the increased prisoners is a practical and GOP platform question - The GOP in this congress have demanded that all legislation be paid for. You will also have increased health care costs due directly to teenage pregnancy because most contraception would be outlawed.
Juvenile as in hyterical, jim. "Most contraception would be outlawed", a juvenile hysterical statement.
Gov. Romney and Paul Ryan are not proposing to outlaw ANY contraception...but it is the province of the State legislatures that have the powers to determine the regulation of abortions after the first trimester, as according to the settled law of Rowe v. Wade Supreme Court decision.
YOUR VIDEO CUTS OFF BEFORE YOU CAN DELIVER THE FINAL LINE OF YOUR HARD HITTING EDITORIAL!!!

HELP!
Your not missing much, Jack...O'Donnell's Last Word is like Vicks Vape-O-Rub, made up of vapous fumes, and nothing more.
Hey Keith I know that fact have a liberal bias, but why don’t you deal in true facts, not just the crap said on Fox (Fixed) news.
Fact 1: the National Debt you refer to at the end of the bush administration according to their accounting was a 10T debt, what you fail to say (or understand) is that bush being the dishonest ahole he was kept the costs of the wars off the books. So if you want to be honest (which is uncharacteristic of any republicans these days) you need to add the 4.2T of debt from the off the books military spending under bush. Obama being an honest leader put the costs of the Wars on the annual budget where it should have been in the first place, thus placing the national debt at like 14-15 Trillion a month after he took office.
Fact 2: The annual budget deficit you and all the other republicans are (dishonestly) screaming about would very easily be addressed if we simply raise the taxes on people making more than 1Million annually 3% (I would argue 5-9%), that coupled with raising the ceiling on the maximum taxes for social security from 100K to 1 Million (you add 50years to the SS program), remove it all together and your not only fund the SS program FOREVER you also almost completely solve the more pressing issues facing the Medicaid program, finally if you simply cut the military by 10-15% the National Debt is gone in 10 years. And before you embarrass yourself and say the idiotic mantra “but you can’t attack the job creators!” What Obama is asking those cheap UNAMERICAN douchbags, who like Romney are all mostly investing abroad (where the greatest short term returns are) and sinking their assets in foreign banks to avoid taxation, which beyond being Illegal (treason in my opinion) at a minimum is not a sound long term investment plan if you want to remain an American citizen or have the hope that you children will be able to be raised in “the greatest nation on earth” (phrase you right wing troglodytes toss around with great frequency). What this president is asking those buttheads to do is to simply pay $575 more a week on taxes, this great sacrifice will reduce their net weekly income from about $12,500 to the austere $11,975 per week (minus state and local taxes). How will they ever be able to survive! And please give me a break neither you nor your republican friends said word one about the debt or deficits under the Bush Administration, and now this is the most pressing issue for you. I would love for you to produce a single post by you criticizing Dick (an aptly named man) Cheney when he said “deficits don’t matter”
Fact 3: The surveys that say the majority of Americans are Pro-life are at a minimum misleading and in fact, they do not address exactly the issue at hand here. Even (with as much mocking a tone a human could possible produce) your new stalwart leader has (with great shock) flip flopped yet again on this issue. Even Romney himself has changed back to the stated belief that abortion should be legal in cases of Rape, Incest and or for the life of the mother. And according to his last statement on the issue would allow for federal payments for these procedures in conflict with the Hyde Amendment. Now I realize flipper Romney will undoubtedly will give multiple answers to this question depending on what ever group he stand before at any given time, and that he is not smart enough to even understand that is what he agreed to as of the last interview, but what I don’t understand is how willfully blind to this obvious contradiction that you and his supporters are. You pretend to be people of conscience on this issue yet you still support a man you know is lying to you about this subject. Further you attempt to cover over this very important issue regarding the health of women, particularly the health of those 32000 women impregnated each year as a result of Rape, with a discussion of the National Debt? Well, excuse me for being able to walk and chew gum at the same time, as I am able to destroy your patent lies regarding the National Debt and the budget deficit, while I am still calling you and your party out for embracing not only the “bizarre and offensive statement made by a congressman running for the Senate in Bible Belt Missouri.”, but the rapists of women that you and your position on the subject of “life” lend aid and comfort to. You and your party standing with the interests of the Rapists is not only bad public policy but it is psychopathic. Please do us all a favor on Election Day, seek out a qualified mental health provider after you cast your ballot for a man who will pursue policies contrary to the betterment of yourself and this nation.
Boy, is that dumb. That nonsense that the Defense Department spending for the Afghan and Iraq wars was off the books...apparently you weren't paying attention when Bush had to go to Congress repeatedly to continue to get the appropriations, including for the surge in iraq that the swing vote gained from Joe Liberman, my Democrat Senator secured as people like Harry Reid were whining "The War is Lost"!
As to the vaunted millionaire tax...that has been estimated by the CBO to raise only $4.7 billion a year...or about enough to pay for one day of the kind of expenditures made by the Federal Government each year, now at $3.7 Trillion, over $1 Trillion of which is deficit spending.
And the problem is that if Obama and the Democrats received those additional dollars, they wouldn't go to debt pay down...there plans as in the failed budgets that Obama presented the past three years (which didn't receive on Democrat vote in favor as well as noi Republican votes) only showed more Big Government domestic social spending for the proposed increased taxes taken from the private sector and the investor class. You just can't rob Peter to pay Paul...not without harming both Peter and Paul, Michael.
Stop waving the silly Etch-a-Sketch, Gramps; it looks ridiculous at your age...
Bush put through tax cuts that meant when he went to Congress to get funds for the wars, he was essentially borrowing it.
That was unprecedented, and the fact that he took office with Sadaam in his gunsights is why history will rate him lower than Buchanan on the scale of "worsts U.S. Presidents" ever.
Man, I've been saying this stuff for months, and it took you this long to come up this utterly dishonest answer...
Fail...
The R's only requested the Bush II cuts last 10 years. Any longer than that and they would have had to find a way to pay for them...and they knew they couldn't.
So, let me understand this: the woman is raped, (against her will, is there any other kind of rape?) she becomes pregnant with this disgusting devil seed, the pregnancy threatens her life, she may or does die as a result. Maybe the rapist is a diseased HIV or serial killer type. She has to continue the pregnancy until it kills her, or she brings into the world a sick, physically or psychologically, child. Now the "system" must support this "offspring" for the rest of its life, or until it becomes an adult. Until it is released into society to do what its DNA dictates. OK, what about the "father"? He just goes on his merry way with a slap on the wrist, a year or two in jail. Gets out and does it again. We all know that a woman that dies as a result of a rape makes for not a credible witness against the rapist. Why not impose the death penalty to the rapist also? Maybe I don't understand this; is it really a benefit for the taxpayers to pay for the raising and upbringing of these products of "unwanted" rape? Really who wants to adopt these tiny unfortunate and possibly physically and certainly the carriers of the DNA of mental illness? While living in a third world area there were "orphanages" they were full of children born of incest, and simply born because there was no other way to handle it. No birth control, no abortion. The country paid the bill until maturity and then these psychologically critically wounded young adults were released into the general population of the islands. Surely you get the picture.
WHY is it always the "woman" who must suffer, and have her own body controlled?? Never is there a hint of castration for rape, or even child rape. Is that because there are mostly men in the House and the Senate??
Why is there no public out cry or demand for the constitutional control of the male body??
My bad! I forgot.... something from my childhood 70 years ago: "when a woman is kept barefoot and pregnant, she won't be able to vote".
What has happened to the respect for the Constitution of our United States, The simple logic of the Bill of Rights?? All people are born equal, with equal rights. How the devil did that simple dictate we based or lives on get so mucked up??
Compassion and charity are now referred to as "Socialism". By the super rich. Exactly just how insecure must a man be to need more than several million dollars in his control? The man convinced that he has no value other than the contents of his bank accounts?
Those that are REALLY and TOTALLY in control of our country have presented for you voting approval an nice boy, from a good family, with good manners, and he's easy on the eyes. Best of all he is OBEDIENT. Those in control insist. He has no possession other than what is dictated to him by those who own the money in control of the Romney money.
