Ever since Paul Ryan's name started getting mentioned as a possible Republican VP pick, he's been distancing himself from the other woman in his life: Ayn Rand.
He had to drop his beloved then for two reasons. One: he was being considered for the Republican vice presidential nomination. And two: Catholics became highly critical of Ryan's very public entanglement with this woman.
MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell weighed in on the bad romance in the Rewrite.

I'm a believer. Paul Ryan is an Aynist.
I agree. He is an atheist.
You used to show some promise here, Augustus, so what is up with you lately? One lamed brained statement anti Romney/Ryan after another based on crappolla!
I agree; I think he really loves rand and just uses the Catholic Church for political cover, as he would never be a big shot in the GOP without some religion. the rest of it is just for power, especially over women.
lol what other lies well he tell the people??? Think about that before you cast your vote in November.
What lies and by the way did you know that Ryan own priest was upset about Ryans budget plan saying it isn't god like.
Republicans don't pretend to be Gods, we leave that to the Democrat's who think they have a devine right to interfere in peoples lifes, and their religious institutions with legislation like ObamaCare, Donald.
@ Keith Longey -- "Republicans don't pretend to be Gods"
If you are a Christian you are called to be Christ like. "Do this in remembrance of me."
How is Paul Ryan's budget that takes money from the poor and gives it to the rich Christ-like?
I thought church and state were supposed to be separate? Oh, but for liberals, that only means when it comes to abortion and free birth control, illegal immigration, gay marriage, etc. Can't have it both ways buddy. Don't tell a religious person to be religious when it supports your cause, but then get angry when they support what they believe because you disagree. I believe wholeheartedly in helping people that NEED help, but if you're able bodied and choose not to work b/c you don't like the wage rate of the available job, or just don't feel like working, you don't deserve help. Let's define who NEEDS help first!!
Theoncomingstorm: It's the Government that is taking the people's money, not one group of people taking another groups money. In the eyes of Obama, it is the function of the federal government to take the money from the rich to redistribute it in direct payments (as in Earned Income Tax Credits) and paying for all the social assistance programs to the lower middle class and working and non working poor.
Nobody is taking money from the poor to give to the rich...that is absurd nonsense! Get a clue!
Keith: "Democrat's who think they have a devine right to interfere in peoples lifes" (sic). But when it comes to reproductive choices, its fine to interfere in people's lives, no wait, to take over for them if and by whom (including rapists) they must have children. What hypocrisy.
I've been wondering what book Mitt R. would place his hand on if he should take the oath of office for President.
I think I know now..........................Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand.
I believe Romney will have the right to choose between the King James Bible or The Book of Mormon!
Or if its, Obama, the King James Bible or the Koran!
As we all know, Obama has already been sworn in on the Bible, so what's the issue?
We take from literature what we wish, and leave behind that which does not appeal to us.
Because Paul Ryan, like Prime Minister Harper of Canada, finds that Rand message of individualism vs. collectiveism to his liking, and subsumes the principles of taking responsability for one's actions and being self reliant into his own guiding pricinciple and promotes those messages to his staff and others he meets, does not mean that he is a total beliver in all Ayn Rand contained in her phisosopy. Ayn Rand was notably an athiest, and Paul Ryan has no belief nor allegiance to atheism just bacause that was also espoused by this mid 20th Century economic and political philosopher.
Obama takes much from the writings of Karl Marx, and the Communist Manifesto in his economic and political philosophy, but he still claims to be a practicing Christian, for example.
Whats sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.
Keith not only are you wrong about our president but at one time even reagan was called a Marxist. I have heard that Ryan and his wife where swingers at one time and he did love the women.
Grandpa is so impressed by his own rhetoric he has to repeat that one about how we take from the literature what we wish...
Narcissists do take from their readings what confirms their self-centered and delusional world... It's easy to spot them, however; they're always at odds with everyone else, prone to extreme dishonesty and outright rudeness, and always seeking the spotlight to mask their deep inadequacies...
Those of us raised in the "Sputnik Generation" were educated to ask the tough questions instead and think outside the box...
Obama is up by six points in New Hampshire, BTW...
SLC
Guilding the lily...
But Donald, let's not go with unproven rumors (at least until there are pictures). Romney already has his wife up there giving a Joan of Arc speech on their taxes...
I have no doubt that Obama read Marx, and took what he wanted from his "manifesto", Cab Driver, just as he sat in Reverand Wrights church listening to Black Thelogy philosophical sermons, but rejected (and apparently forgot) the "God Damn America" comments, and the anti Jewish, anti-White bigotry.
Donald: you are a puke! That "Ryans as swingers" comment as something some little bird or imaginary source told you is the very nature of the kind of campaign tactics being used by the Chicago gansta' politicos, and believe me, it's as Mayor Cory Booker said, sickening. Another post flagged!
Geesh...Ryan's only been on the GOP ticket for a few days and he's already learning how to do a Romney flip-flop on his previous statements about Ayn Rand.
Ryan did it in the "pike" position and full layout with way too many twists, but sadly, Ryan didn't stick his landing...he was about 180 degrees off.
Will these GOP bozos ever learn that they have a history of saying things that are on video that they will never, ever be able to walk back and disavow that they ever said that?
Oh, Donald...Keith likes to portray himself as a "learned" man. You, however, are entitled to your own opinion about that.
Kind of like Obama said in 08 that when you're out of ideas, you have to resort to name calling and the like? Hmmm. Interesting. Of how he said he would cut the deficit IN HALF or be a one term president? Hmmm. Maybe he meant to say he would try to DOUBLE the deficit unless someone stopped him. You libs are so freakin hypocritical when it comes to politics.
And hypocritcal when they start with the playing of the race card as Joe Biden did yesterday in Virginia telling 600 black voters "Romney wants to take the chains off of Wall Street and put BACK them on you'all." Or hypocritical when they start up with the anti Mormon bigotry which has been a favorite subject of puke head Little Lying Larry here! What a bunch of low life gutter pap suckers!
You really want to discuss quotations when your primary candidate is on record for having uttered the following unforgettable phrase?
"I don't remember what I said, but I stand by it, whatever it was!"
Progressives don't have to be hypocritical, ANTHEMBOY. All anyone with a remote clue has to do is wait for either Romney and/or Ryan to say something they've already disavowed or will shortly. Mitt has made a notable career of doing that and now it seems his picked boy wonder is cut from the same cloth. However what I find most amusing is how many Republicans are leery of Ryan's selection to the ticket...and to their credit, some of them aren't afraid to admit it. Hmmm...wonder why some R politicians are shunning "support" visits from Ryan? Hmmm...maybe it has to do with some of those provisions in his "plan" that are particularly offensive to segments of voters, like the elderly. Hmmm?
But sincerely, I'd like to thank your side for the hilarious comedy of the GOP primaries this past year. It was a true laugh fest watching them cut each other up and best of all, if you could sit through it, it was free of charge.
Yep, almost as much fun as watching Sarah sneak a peek at her palm.
Keith...you're trying to deflect agan. Silly Keith...and if you had a wit of knowledge about you, you'd know that the vast majority of the flack coming about Romney's religion is coming from the ultra-conservative christian sect of the GOP.
Keith - do you want to address all the comments made or actions by Republican Elected Officials, Spokesman for Candidates, Candidates and Republicans about this President that are racial or have racial undertones. Nor did Republican leaders ever denounce what was being said or done.
Where was the outrage when Rick Santorum last summer said to Iowa voters that health care reform would make citizens dependent on government. “They will put you in chains called ‘Obamacare,’ and you will never break away,” Santorum said.
There is that Republican double standard.
I don't believe anything republican say. I never seen a president race with so much hate for the African american and Latino act like we don't vote . UNITED WE STAND TOGETHER . IT'S TIME WE SHOW THE REPUBLICAN WE VOTE TO. NOV 6 OBAMA 2012
Only anti black, anti Hispanic I've seen is the Obama economy and what it's done to their communities and families.
When is Larry going to come out of the Closet?? Democrats have the morals of dogs in heat. Where are they going after MSNBC closes, maybe the GORE Channel??
Fox news is so BIAS that it shouldn't even be called a news station.
Another so called Good Christian heard from, gee the Christian religion has certainly changed the teachings since the nuns and priests taught me.
Did Paul Ryan ancestors immigrate from Germany????????? Put a mustache on Paul Ryan and you will have Hilter.
Great! You got it right!
Only Nationalist Socialist in this campaign is Barrack Hussein Obama, wh is out to have Federal Government control of the Private Sector in our formly free market capitalist economy.
Gladys, I have noticed the same thing, Ryan is a skinny version of Adolph Hitler in his looks and body language.
Keith, as Ayn Rand pointed out, our economy has never been entirely free market. You must have missed that when you read her writings.
Best spelling I've seen yet - Paul R'AYN.
It looks like from now to November Ryan wil be the laughing stock of television.
At least we will be intertained by what the media will do to him, except for Fox News who may say that Jesus has returned and in the form of Paul Ryan. At least one person told me that. Is Paul Ryan mentally ill?
After yesterday's display by Joe Biden before a group of ralliers in Danville, VIRGINIA that included 500 to 600 Afro-Americans (urging them to win NORTH CAROLINA), he went on to state in his ending remarks that "Romney/Ryan would take the chains off of Wall Street...and put them on y'all" (said in his best mock Southern drawl). An obvious attempt to rile up the Black voter base they need so badly even though the Obama/Biden economy has failed the black community so badly over the last 4 years.
Twould be funnier if it wasn't so insulting to the black community, Augustus!
I was so ashamed and angry hen Paul Ryan spoke at Georgetown earlier this summer and said his budget was based on Catholic Social Teaching. There could be nothing farther from truth. Catholic Social Teaching would never support his theft from the poor to pay the rich. How could he be a follower of Ayn Rand and CST at the same time???
A Catholic Priest. Don't be angree. He is a big joke, a cloun, I will not say what else he is. Some will even say that he is born of a virgin.
Born of a virgin? Ryan?" I don't believe that would be true. But it is true that Obama was born a Muslim! And he certainly isn't with his Gay Marriage and enforcing on the Roman Catholic Church conraception, sterialization, and abortion support and his recent "evolving" supporting Catholic Social Teachings, Augustus.
THE RYAN/RAND CONNECTON: Stunning video connection you made between Paul Ryan and Ayn Rand last night (Aug. 14, 2012).
For those of you who want to see the full Mike Wallace interview of Rand done in 1959, it is on YouTube. It truly is a must see, given Paul Ryan's hero worship of her.
Ms. Rand overlooks the fact that "government" is nothing more than "we the people" who have come together and organized ourselves in a way that serves our values best. For Americans, it is a system of laws that no man or woman is above. If you listen closely to Ms. Rand's philosophy, it can only exist under a benign dictatorship. She would deny voting rights in certain situations.
Rand's ideas are incompatible with the Preamble to our Constitution, that contemplates the promotion of the common welfare. We all know what that means; Ms. Rand does not, because she is a Russian born atheist who says no man owes anything to his fellow man unless service to one's fellow man will also serve one's own self-interest.
Carl Kirsch, Atlanta, GA
With Ryan as a potential vice president, we are gong to be entertained from now on until November. The best comedy yet - Romney and Ryan, the two stooges. It will be more funny than the three stooges. Maybe there are three stooges: Romney, Ryan and Rand = the three R.
The American People came together t form a limited federal government to preserve the Creator's Given Rights of Life, LIBERTY, and Happiness. Not to make us subjects of an ever growing and ever more intrusive government, Carl.
Augustus...
Keith likes to puff himself up and sound like he's somehow been appointed as the sole interpreter of the will and spirit of the American public. He likes to portray himself as having an aura of superiority, no doubt garnered from his hero worship of his idol, Mitt Romney and that no one understands the people of this country like he can. Nothing could be further from the truth, but wearing the blinders he obviously does, he's incapable of discerning that. He tries to continually deflect the subject topic, but he's not sufficiently capable of doing that either.
Maybe he'll realize that the email he sent to himself appointing him to that "position" isn't really valid in the eyes of anybody else.
Until you come half way close to the knowledge and experience in the world that I have, Eyes Wide Shut, i suggest you shut the f..k up and take notes, and study up before you think you can refute my arguments with anything other than raving insults,
Awww poor little Keith, you do have rather thin skin, don't you, boy-o? You sound so-o-o-o irritated. Still struggling with that self-proclaimed mantra of superiority, aren't you...my, my, my. You do make a lot of assumptions, especially for one who has described himself as being so "learned", don't you? One doesn't need to "take notes and study up before" refuting your arguments...I could tell you why,but it would only burn what's left of that short fuse of yours.
If I have learned anything from your posts, it's that you don't really have "arguments", you tend to spout your opinions, which is fine, but only if you can back them up with some credible evidence, which you just never seem to do. You try to regale me with little stories of your life, as if you really thought that would provide some empirical corroboration. Other than that, with you, it's usually an easily foreseeable attempt at deflection (YAWN).
I suggest that you take a few moments and jot down your life experiences in a book, Keith. Then, you could classify it in one of two ways (perhaps both):
1. Fiction
2. Medical (as in a cure for insomnia)
I do believe I see you, Keith...but only in my rearview mirror.
ryan also has a wife and i think she has had a lobotomy.
Do you know that Mrs. Ryan was a practicing lawyer who, like Ann Romney, gave up her career to raise the Ryans young children?
There is no one more stepford like than the young women of this country following Obama, the pied piper of oral contraception, sterialization, and abortion support down the road of our sociey's family and social further degradation.
Who cares if she believes in god or not!!!!!! Did you ever think maybe he lied to try to keep things in his life private.... People are stupid as @!$%# if we are going to vote weather or not this guy believe's in god.. We are voting for a presidents not god...I do believe we live in USA everyone has the right to there gods or no gods... After all Obama Is a Jew and swore in on his bible... His private life should stay private.. Obama keeps lieing about his and lied bout everything he said 4 yrs ago... They all lie... and they are all crooked so put that in your pipe and smoke it........ Oh and @!$%# Obama care it sucks maybe they should work on the care it self Doctor suck ass and they all lie should we bust there chops...
I thought that Lawrence's insight into Ayn/Ryan romance was devastating. It seems that Ryan's apreciation of Ms. Rand and her philosophy was at best superficial and at a high school level. It amazes me that he is being touted as the intellect of the Republican Party. Some Republican Congressman was bragging about how Ryan with his sharp itellectual acuity was going to take Joe Biden to the intellectual woodshed. Seriously! I can't imagine a serious intellectual adopting a person's philosophy without vetting the system and testing whether it fits with his belief. Ryan seems to have known little if anything about Ms. Rand's foundational beliefs and seems not have grasp the antheism that animates her philosophy. Good Luck with Biden!.
One doesn't have to be an athist to appreciate individualism over collectiveism, and libertarian values, and self reliance and taking responsibility for one's actions. Examine the Transcendentalist Philosphical movement in the early 19th Century in the US and Europe, and particularly the writings of the Unitarian Ralph Waldo Emerson, who Ayn Rand read at enormously, Fitz!
I read all of Ayn Rand's books while at college and enjoyed them immensely.THE ROMANTIC MANIFESTO is still a favorite of mine. I am convinced that Ayn Rand would NOT support the Republican Party of today at all. As for Romney, Ayn's heroes were people who built things, people that kept the trains and planes running on time, and rugged individualists, not the lobbyists or the people who use the laws to make money.
Seems to me that turning around failing companies in troubled industries in the private sector as Romney made a career doing (85% success rate at that) and working and incorporating the family small contracting business in Wisconsin as Paul Ryan did might receive the approval of Ayn Rand, starose. But i agree, that she would have no use for Barrack Obama and Joe Biden who don't seem to have ever held a real job in all their lives, certainly nothing in the private sector.
Amazing how the progressives, liberals, and the Left ( The Media ) are so anti - American, anti- religious, anti- law and order. It's like they are brain washed zombies who spew talking points and cannot make logical or ethical sense because they depend on someone to tell them what to say or how to think. Now they are scared of Romney/RYan because NOW, they have to focus on real issues, like the economy and jobs. Obama and Biden have nothing to show. Again this shows they can't make logical decisions and they are UNAMERICAN if they vote for someone who can't lead and wants to turn America into a European Socialist country. Wimps, sheeple, zombies. The only reason i am on this site making a comment is because i was flipping the channels and caught O'donnell spewing...and they wonder why their ratings tank and suck...America is on to you...
Uh-oh....Ryan is beginning to follow Romney in the flip/flop area; of course he has some catching up to do to match Romney; but Ryan will get there...what a joke these two are for the Republican Party.
I can't believe that we keep talking about personal issues for either candidate and how people can't make rational decisions on their own on either side of the aisle. I don't need anyone to tell me anything more about Obama's or Romney's, or Ryan's personal lives, or their wives, or who they followed in high school or college, or what they eat, or wear, or about their taxes, or income, or contribution to charity, or religious beliefs, or breaking down every single word they say to fit whatever they want it to mean. What I CAN SEE WITH MY OWN EYES is an unemployment rate above 8% when it was promised to be much lower, high gas and food prices, a threat of a HUGE tax increase on my family, a $16 Trillion dollar debt, insolvent entitlement programs, cities in California going bankrupt, nearly half the country on welfare, and no concrete evidence of PROGRESS. I don't care if it's "not as bad as it would have been". We need a change b/c what this president is doing is not helping the economy. Business owners (like my boss), are waiting to see what happens with taxes and the economy before they invest MORE OF THEIR MONEY into their business. It's their money, you can't force it out of them and taxing the crap out of them will not create jobs or improve the economy. It just means more money for the FED, less jobs and less money in the average workers pocket. People, wake up!!!
If business owners, like your boss, and indeed, all of the rich, would stop hoarding piles of $ in offshore accounts and instead give you and all of us that raise you talk about, we would spend that $ which would stimulate the economy ( without any Govt help) ! Consumers (middle class) can't consume without $)
Thank god for audio and video tape.. as it seems that these two GOP leaders will never ever learn that they have a history of saying things that are on video? So they will never, ever be able to walk back and disavow that they ever said that...LOL.
If Obama lets them keep on talking that is all he needs. Either they can't remember #hit, they are really dumb, or great big liars. Any one of these is enough to lose my vote, but these 2 have it all. Romney I believe picked a mirror of himself. Their campaign staff is not hitting on much either. Confirms I must vote for Obama. Did not meet my expections first 3 years, but had many obstacles also. He is more trustworthy and listens to his staff. Romney appears to be immature and pretty much self-centered with no people skills and does not believe in the middle class. When around "commoners" he appears very uncomfortable. Cannot believe GOP could not do better.
