The Vatican is taking some hard lines against American nuns it views as too progressive in their thinking. In the Rewrite, Lawrence O'Donnell explains why the nuns — and even Stephen Colbert — are right and the Vatican is wrong.
Vatican tries to rewrite nuns

Oh man, talk about a typo... What'd you guys do, hire a copy writer from the Romney camp?
Vatican tries to rewrite runs...
I'm not gonna touch that one...
Wow... Twelve hours to fix that one... I wish someone would say something, however; otherwise Grandpa is liable to show up and try to gaslight me... Should've taken a screen shot, I guess...
Onward, and anyone who thinks Lawrence doesn't have "Catholic Issues" wasn't paying attention to how he struggled to say "masturbation."
Several times... BTW, I sympathize. I'm not sure I would've done any better... Being raised in toxic religions can traumatize a person for life...
Viva Portnoy!
Hi Cabbie, how's things?
Just tell me you saw the typo, and I'll be fine. I can live with the trolls and their teaparty sheepwash, but that one had me scratching my head...
I think I got Cindy to quit crying for a while at least... Gave her a workbook in basic arithmetic stuff...
Grandpa's either off his meds or hitting the Nyquil really heavy...
Missed the typo, no surprise as they can happen.
A nun is a face of the Catholic Church, just like any employee is the face of a company. If a nun says something that goes against the teachings of the Church, it is the Church's job to clarify its views and distance themselves from the opinions the nun expressed. The clarifications that the Vatican gave are not new, nor are they a surprise. Most people know how the Catholic Church feels about masturbation and homosexual relationships. I'm not posting this to say whether or not the Catholic Church is right or wrong. I'm posting this to say that I thought this was a very distasteful segment. I don't appreciate Mr. O'Donnell saying that there are "intelligent Catholics" and not intelligent Catholics based on if they agree with their Church's teachings. I'd like to think that I'm a good Catholic, and I largely agree with the nun, but I don't think that the people that go to my Church that disagree with me are stupid. Calling people stupid because they don't agree with you? That sounds just as bad as the people in the far right wing that do the same exact thing to you. I'm done with your show.
The Vaticans views are not new nor a surprise; however, they are greatly out of step with current medical, psychiatric and psychological theories and trends. Similarly, the nuns were expressing an opinion, not a theological teaching. We have long been taught as Catholics that we have the right to an informed conscience. The problem is the Vatican can not seem to get it through its thick head that this is no longer the 19th century, populated by a congregation with minimal education. The majority of Catholics and the great majority of vowed religious women today have advanced degrees and can go toe to toe with the Congregation for the Propegation of the Faith, rather than saying; "Oh, yes Father, thank you." They also need to keep in mind that there would be no American Church if it were not for the work that these women did years ago in hospitals, schools and the community, winning over the hearts of those who oppossed them in the largely Protestant community of the U.S.
Steven, in using the word "intelligent," he had a specific point to make in reference to Catholic dogma. The reference to Catholics who are well-educated in the doctrines of the Catholic church, rather than that less-informed Catholics, or Catholics who differ with doctrine, was not made to suggest that they are stupid.
If I'd known you were going to have a contest to name the Romney campaign bus, would have suggested "Eels on Wheels" (slippery eels that is.) The winner was far better, however, and the "50 Shades of Greyhound Bus" was hilarious.
The misguided efforts of those "Inquisition guys" call to mind a very interesting book entitled "The Other Bible" which is a compendium of very interesting materials which were written at the same time and place as those handed down to us.
These other writings, however, were ones rejected by the early Catholic church when they were deciding what to include in the Bible.
It seems that our Bible, the inerrant word of God, is actually a product of human beings in not only the writing but also in the editing.
What do the Boy Scouts of American and the Girl Scouts of America and the Catholic Church have in common that people like O'Donnell and his gay band of followers so despise: "To remain clean in thought and deed"! Celebrate modern day psycho-sexual research if you like, but don't be attempting to belittle the though and principles that are dealing with the issue of human fraility in sexual issues from a higher plane. You don't have safe and proven alternatives of philosophical and education doctrines for our society in all your ballyhooded secularisms..
Keith,
Safe and functional secular moral doctrines are of serious concern to many people, such as Lawrence and many others, people who happen to be both gay and straight. But we cannot advance to real-world systems if our intent is to stay mired in mythology.
Two months ago when Grandpa eased his jalopy into these parts, I tossed a shot at him about being a religious zealot.
He insisted he was strictly a secular sort... Right... His very own Etch-a-Sketch moment...
That one's on the record folks, and anyone who wants to go through the archives and find it can have a free cab ride the next time they're in Salt Lake.
Reminds me of a guy I used to fish with; wasn't so bad listening to his crap when I was the one with the full creel, but it got way worse when he claimed to have started practicing catch-and-release.
The institutions of the various hurches and their teachings are recognized and respected by the Unitarian/Universalists, which church I had graduated to from New England Congregationalists (just as Ralph Waldo Emerson had graduated, Cab Driver); then once having a firm foundation, I went on to the lure of the secular; so now I spend my Sunday AMs with the Weekly Political News and Commentary Shows instead of church services. But other than a nagging ribald sense of humor, I lead a pretty moral life!
I don't suppose with your perpetual battle with the bottle though, Cabbie, you still are adolescentally questioning your "higher power" your "Book" tells you that you should recognize.
Lawrence, are you saying Jesus was Pro-Choice because he never said he wasn't?
Based on the words of Jesus and how he treated others, it reasonable to believe that Jesus was pro-choice.
Jesus was very pro choice. Folks trying to say anything else are just as hypocritical as the Pope
Imagine; what if the pro-choicers had gathered to convience the unmarried mother of god to abort her pregnancy? What if Joseph had encourged it, and not had faith in the angel that brought the word of God that she carried their Holy Father's Spirit's child in her womb? Perhaps that is what bigots and secularists like O'Donnell believe would have been the right course of action for the world?
The Inquisition
Cutting a deal with the Nazis to protect art works
A Pope with a record of protecting child molesters and ignoring the victims
the Catholic church should stay away from the subject of depravity
Typical religious craziness. The Pope telling Nuns to not follow the Scriptures, talk about religion for hire
This is not the only attack on women and children by the Pope. His attacks on Survivors Network, headed by Barbara Dorris, of those Sexually abused by Priests, using highly paid lawyers are legendary and driving victims to shut up. Ms. Dorris has been pleading with Cardinal Dolan to "Stop the legal bullying" to no avail. http://www.snapnetwork.org/snap_petition
A study conducted by by the Catholic Church itself indicated that 40% of the Nuns are raped and or sexually abused by Priests and Bishops but nothing has been done to address this issue. National Media has bee essentially silent.
“According to the 1996 survey of nuns in the United States (which was intentionally never published by the [Ed.: Roman Catholic] Church but was leaked by some Vatican insider), it is reported that a minimum of 34,000 Catholic nuns (about 40% of all American nuns) claim to have been sexually abused. Three of every four of these nuns claimed they were sexually victimized by a priest, nun, or other religious person. Two out of five nuns who stated they were sexually abused claimed that their exploitation included some form of genital contact. All nuns who claimed repeated sexual exploitation reported that they were pressured by religious superiors for sexual favors.” – “Boston Globe” http://www.toughissues.org/handoutsnew/Sexual%20Abuse.htm
Isn't ALL scripture written by man?
I for one was raised and born into catholicism in a country where 90% embraces the catholic faith and teaching. My views totally clash with the church and its flock because I don't support most of the catholic church's ridiculous and not so realistic teachings that don't sit well with what the realities of life is all about.
I come from the Philippines. Most of the filipinos will ostracize me for my radical views. Sure they won't kill me and my family. But they sure are capable of inflicting psychological damage to a certain extent. I already had a taste of it when I defended Lady Gaga. LOL!
Lovely, Mavik! LOL!
Were the priests that molested boys "clean in thought and deed"?? Just askin?
Homosexuality, which we call gay to alleviate ridiculous in language and in life 1 - is the behavior contrary to the nature of creation since its inception 2 - Conduct contrary to all religious beliefs in the universe and the earth 3 - behavior depends on the satisfaction of desire and individual not satisfy desire, natural of all human beings may not be system and make it law within communities 4 - to recognize and protect the civilians, blatant assault on the right of the small creature next abnormal deviation homosexual acts and conquer it does not know the magnitude of the disaster and a revolt against society, and indeed abnormal
It's a case of corrupt behavior and what may currently produced in the community, independent, and a path to violence in the first hidden way
How is this guy Lawrence even a commentator. he is the most unfair, unreasonable, absurd commentator. Even more than Fox. His facts are totally distorted about Obama. Does anyone really think they are better off now than 4 years ago. C'mon you have to be kidding..Our defecit if 5 trillion dollars higher, size of govt has increased 20 %, 15 MM people are out fo work. foreclosures are back up..where did Obama create 4Mm jobs.I am a headhunter, i have hundreds of out of work people over the age of 40 This is all about spinning. Obama was a 1 yr senator, he never should have been elected. I think we all know why
Ive tried watching his show w ith an open mind, but he loads his panel with extreme liberals who only here what they want to here
I ma saying Romney is the answer, but Obama had his turn, if he were a CEO of a distresse comp and had 3 plus yrs and didnt turn it around he would be fired. Simple as that..Where are te 4 MM jobs he created, they cant be filled, there arent quailified people for them. and Burger King doesnt pay that much. The eceonomy will never turn around until there is a 4 or 5% Unempl figure, Nobody has money to spend, except the liberals on MSNBC
