The Internets' response to marriage equality.
President Obama's public announcement of his support of marriage equality today didn't woo any Log Cabin Republicans. The GOP group that advocates for gay rights called his remarks "offensive and callous" due to the timing and noted he's finally following Dick Cheney's lead.
"That the president has chosen today, when LGBT Americans are mourning the passage of Amendment One, to finally speak up for marriage equality is offensive and callous," said Log Cabin Republicans Executive Director R. Clarke Cooper in a statement. "Log Cabin Republicans appreciate that President Obama has finally come in line with leaders like Vice President Dick Cheney on this issue, but LGBT Americans are right to be angry that this calculated announcement comes too late to be of any use to the people of North Carolina, or any of the other states that have addressed this issue on his watch. This administration has manipulated LGBT families for political gain as much as anybody, and after his campaign’s ridiculous contortions to deny support for marriage equality this week he does not deserve praise for an announcement that comes a day late and a dollar short."
The RNC also accused Obama of playing politics on this issue. "The Republican Party and our presumptive nominee Mitt Romney have been clear," Reince Priebus wrote in a statement. "We support maintaining marriage between one man and one woman and would oppose any attempts to change that."

Gee guys, it must be rough being out of touch with both your community and your party.
How cynical of the Log Cabin executive director to dismiss President Obama's timing, and suggest that former Vice President Cheney arrived at a more timely revelation...in July, 2009, seven months after leaving office. BFD! Political courage is taking a position while in office, facing an election...not months later when you are cashing your pension checks and nobody cares. Cheney's daughter was gay and in a long term relationship throughout his 8 years as the second most powerful man in the world...and he was stone silent! This supposed disgust is laughable...
This may be difficult for some people from the "me, me, me" generation to understand, but a lot of seasoned people don't think what a person's bedroom issues are about or what they think of other peoples bedroom issue needs to be constantly aired in public forums!
This is a distration issue, and has no relevance at all on the election decision ahead of us this year.
So give it a rest, MSNBC!
Yes, the Party that chooses to call itself the party for smaller government thinks that it has the right to expand their government into every bedroom in the country! And from there, into our doctor's offices as well and the lives of every woman in the country. This is the biggest buffoon of a party since the late 1800's and will go down in history (assuming this country is wise enough eventually to see what this party now is) as being one of the most rediculous eras of politics in America. Fear and lies used to control an unthinking mass of people, who, by following it, are cutting their own throats in every way..
Really LCR? You all are doing everything you can to stick with the republicans even though they have done everything but thrown stones at you. You're like stalkers who won't give up. HELLO!! THEY DON'T WANT YOU IN THEIR PARTY. ALL THEY DO IS VOTE TO TAKE AWAY YOUR RIGHTS! THEY WANT YOU OUT OF THE MILITARY! And you have an issue with the president? Continue to support the bigots. You're too stupid to know what's in your best interest and the president doesn't want your support anyway.
Oops! I thought I canceled this one.
Really LCR?? You have issues with Obama for making a very risky announcement, but you have no issue with Dick, Kaboom, Cheney who only is for gay marriage because his daughter is gay??? You are so out of touch. ATTENTION, THE REPUBLICANS DON'T WANT YOU IN THEIR PARTY!! THEY BANNED YOU FROM CPAC EVENTS. YOU CAN'T SPEAK AT THE CONVENTION. THEY DON'T WANT YOU IN THE MILITARY. THEY MOSTLY VOTED AGAINST THE MATTHEW SHEPHERD BILL FOR HATE CRIMES and you still don't have a problem with them, but you have a problem with the president? You're like stalkers. Trying to get in with a group that wants nothing to do with you. You deserve what you get. The president doesn't want your support any way so just continue to be stupid and vote against your own interest
Do you REALLY think this is about 'bedrooms'? That's pretty ignorant, This is about the benefits and considerations offered to married people. You know, like tax benefits, child custody, property ownership, protection in divorces, keeping a spouse in America by virtue of marriage, children born into such unions being given citizenship, health insurance and other benefits based on marriage. Bedrooms? Seriously?
Hey, all those benefits are there for the individual to reap if they just get with the program that has existed in Western Civilization for thousands of years.
And, there wil be no gay boy scout leaders either, take that to the bank!
I see, so it's not concern over the bedroom that has you all irritated. It's simply same sex marriage, and bigotry. Thanks for clearing that up and being honest.
Irritated? Hardly. i know which way to get my hard news, and what the prevailing side is going to be each time this issue is brought to a vote in the separate states.
This has been the lead story for two weeks now on MSNBC,and they are beating this dead horse unmerricifully. But i guess they think sex sells, even as they continue to watch their ratings sink lower and lower.
So again, you think this is about sex and not about civil rights. Was it also about sex when laws were overturned that prevented interracial marriage? Do you even understand this issue? If it was sex they were fighting for---well they already have that. It's an old tactic. Reduce an important issue to something ridiculous. Happily we are able to look past that and see it for what it is. Dismissing other people's civil rights by making the need appear petty. Nice try though.
I have no personal stake in this issue but as a citizen of this country, born in 1950, raised in a very traditional family, and growing up during the struggle for equal rights under the law for minority groups and for women, I am learning to see that marriage equality is the civil rights issue of our day. It's time to understand that gender determination and sexual orientation are complex biological, chemical, hormonal, psychological phenomena. Does anyone really think that millions of our fellow human beings choose to make the difficult life choices that LGBT people make? A prominent Republican in Minnesota said that he doesn't believe that his happiness depends on depriving others of theirs. I appreciate MSNBC covering this issue and the hypocrisy of the Republican Party and the Religious Right in preaching individual liberty and morality while interfering in the lives of huge groups of our citizens. The Log Cabin Republicans might want to explore another avenue for political activism. It's a little like abused children hoping for the abusing parents' affection. Civil rights should not be subject to a popular vote and it is government's responsibility to protect minority rights. If churches want to restrict for whom they will perform marriages, fine. Government is separate and should be extending and protecting civil rights, especially since the marriage contract involves several other rights conferred by marriage, and now enjoyed only by certain members of our society under a traditional view of this institution. There are two excellent books on the history of marriage describing the anthropological, sociological, geopolitical, religious, and cultural aspects of marriage. Important perspective. Anne
Yeah, and there are people that think drug and alcohol abuse are genetically and chemically linked too. But at the final anaysis, people choose to do drugs and alcohol, sand people choose to introduce penises to their mouths and rectums or to provide oral stimutation to genitalia. Its a behavioral choice issue. Noone is compelled to do those acts by their physical makeup, its learned behavior.
And that is not entitled to a designation of protected "rights"! Just be thankful that the sodomy laws aren't being prosecuted, and keep the nasty in the bedroom where it belongs, I don't wish to be reminded of it nightly on TV by the weak kneeded whiners!
This guy is an idiot. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you! The log cabin repulsicans will undoubtedly benefit from Pres Obama's support of gay marriage so they figure they can attack his position and remain true to their conservative beliefs. They know that Romney and his repulsican cohorts would never come out and support such a "radical" idea as gay marriage, but they still remain loyal to a party that doesn't give a damn about them. I don't understand how anyone can support a political party that refuses to recognize this basic civil and human right for all Americans, a party that continues to do everything to dehumanize gay men and women, and a party who prefers gays to remain in the closet. Why would anyone in his or right mind vote against their own interests?
This organization claims they "support fairness, freedom, and equality for gay and lesbian Americans". Yet, they support a party that hates them and doesn't care about equality for them."They believe equality for gay and lesbian people is in the finest tradition of the Republican Party." What? Really? "Where is the evidence that the repulscans have done or intend to do anything to enrich their lives as gay people? The log cabin members say,"We educate our Party about why inclusion wins" but what has that party done to include them in policies that would benefit them? How long is that education going to take before they see positive results? Show us one iota of proof that the log cabin folks are winning on this point. "Opposing gay and lesbian equality is inconsistent with the GOP's core principles of smaller government and personal freedom". This is pure hogwash! Yes, repulsicans want smaller government but that idea has nothing to do with supporting gays and lesbians.
Log cabin folks are duping themselves, believing a fantasy that the repulsicans care about their issues. Repulsicans only care about the rich, extending taxes for the rich, taking money from the middle class and the poor to avoid increasing taxes on people who can afford to be taxed more, fighting wars, discriminating against persons of color, waging war against women, and doing everything they can to centralize power in the hands of the few. I suspect that log cabin repulsicans are in the GOP because it is the party of the rich, that they care more about preserving their wealth than they care about basic human rights, including their own.
The Log Cabin Repulicans seem to suffer from the same delusional mental problems of regular Republicans, but gay.
Here is a joke I think was said by Bill Maher:
When a dem is having sex with someone, they are thinking about their person they are with.
When a republican is having sex with someone, they are thinking about Dems.
Sadly, these gay republicans want to be accepted by a bunch of people who want them DEAD. I get the feeling that almost ALL of them grew up in republican homes and were rejected when they were outted.
I rather believe the opposite, that they are caught in the trapped stages of arrested adolescent deveopment that included opposition to their father's role model.
