Yet another president, former Mexican President Vicente Fox, is talking about the so-called "War on Drugs." The former Mexican leader calls it "useless" and an "absolute failure." MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell explains why in the latest Rewrite.
Rewriting the 'useless' war on drugs

Former president Fox of Mexico is correct, this war on drugs is a failure just like our war in Vietnam. We need to legalize marijuana and tax and control it just the same as we do tobacco. It would put more revenue in the treasury that doesn't come from the millionaires. You might think they would like that idea. It is money that would boost our economy and it could be used to help pay for a real single payer healthcare system. It would cut costs in our legal and prison system, saving money there. It would give our farmers a new crop to grow too, a crop that would help to repair all of their worn out soil, and make them a healthy profit too. Hemp oil can help with our fuel problems too, it is much cleaner to burn than diesel and we will not have to import it. It would help to make more new jobs too. It is a win-win proposition all the way around except for all of those within the government that are currently profiting off it being illegal. I say to all reading this, go the the petition site and look for my petition to legalize marijuana and hemp and sign it. If this now low rated congress would pass such legislation right away it might bring their rating out of the basement too. It would reduce the problems on the border too. We can grow it here better than they can.
Not in my country, assh***. And you had better not let me see you around any school property, where protecting our youth from your kind is paramount.
The war on drugs has cut signifiantly into the useage of illegal drugs, and even alcohol amonst our nations youth, just as the unofficial war on tobacco has too. There is a growing problem with youths use of prescription drugs, especially pain medication, as that is hyped by our pharmacutical industry and medical prescribers in abundance, and taxed and regulated, just as your marijuana would be if you and low lifes of you ilk got there way. So just say No Way Jose if you see this fool peddling his ill thought out petition for legalization.
We need a coutry where the nerve synapses of our youth haven't been altered by the chemical THC and other durgs of choice if we are going to compete with the rest of the civilized world.
They outlawed the fake weed here in NYC. Now all the money is going back to the drug dealers, tax-free.
Legalize & tax it; instead of wasting billions trying to stop people smoking weed, why not make a few billion, and stop turning half of America into criminals.
I see drunks passed out, fighting, overdosing and in rehab constantly! Alcohol is involved in a huge percentage of crimes. Thousands of people die every year from DWI, or drinking themselves to death (delirium tremens)
When was the last time you saw two potheads duking it out in the street? If you did... you can bet they were drunk too!
The politicians scored some points but they are only helping the dealers get higher prices and more business! FAIL!
Funny how the majority of the most successful people in our country, politicians and businesspeople alike, have admitted to smoking it. When asked, Mayor Bloomberg replied "Yep - and I liked it too!"
He seems to be doing pretty well for himself.
Prudishness never accomplished anything
The "War on Drugs" has now reached your local pharmacy, not to mention, your family physician. Legitimate pain patients are being turned away, profiled, scorned, rejected, humiliated and basically being treated like a criminal by every pharmacy in my local town and practically every pharmacy in the State of Florida. Because of the DEA's efforts to eradicate drug abuse, now legitimate pain patients are being denied their legal prescriptions causing them to go into withdrawal and live without proper pain management. This is a direct denial of their civil rights. Some, despite the increased pain are trying to band together on social media to advocate. I ask that all good citizens look into this and help spread the word before more people die needlessly. What state, no, what country do I need to move to in order to not be in pain?
Legislating plant life is an exercise in futility.
people who think pot is a drug that harms have not done their research..are therefore ignorant and really have not one decent thing to contribute. Do your actual legit research before you comment..Marijuana is a healing plant..don't let stupid people lie to you. Watch 'Run from the Cure'...it's just one documentary..there are tons..The truth is out there..don't swallow the lies but if you do..do me a favor and swallow all of the pharmaceuticals that you can in this lifetime.
In fact you'll be doing us all a favor and supporting your local pharmaceutical company as they poison you.
THCs alteration of nerve snyapses is well documented. Its accumulative and permanent, which is the reason wht unlike the tolerance built by habituation to alcohol and other legal prescription and illegal drugs, with marijuana the more you partake, the lesser the amount you need to get yor "high"! And, it is a world class ambition killer! I use to teach this stuff in a "Medical consequences of alcohol and drug use and abuse, as developed ny a member of the Harvard Medical School teaching faculty. And just what do you pot heads have to to show me for your claimed expertise that it is not harmful? Personal use experience? Please!
Lawrence & co: The lead-up to this segment was a classic bait and switch, with you showing pics of living ex-Presidents of the USA and asking us which president has now changed his mind.
I'm not saying I've never done this maneuver. For instance, when that major Porche designer died recently, I re-blogged it with the headline "911 Mastermind Dies."
But you guys are supposed to be professionals.
Nobody's satisfied with the War on Drugs. And no currently-employed politician would dare suggest we stop it.
So I have a modest proposal. Let's step it up, by outlawing some more popular recreational substances!

Among other things, it would help address the racial imbalance in our prison by giving cops more opportunities to arrest white people. And so we could build more prisons and make more money!
And tales of chocolate smugglers would fire our imaginations, like all those tales of cocaine gangsters, heroin pushers and rum runners of the past. We need a thriving and entertaining criminal culture, as inspiration for Hollywood.
