Mayor Michael Bloomberg announcing a new gun control campaign in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday.
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and other gun control advocates launched a public assault Wednesday against "Stand Your Ground" laws.
The Second Chance on Shoot First campaign aims to reform or repeal laws that allow the use of deadly force when someone believes they are in a life or death situation or could suffer massive bodily harm.
Bloomberg said this type of legislation gives citizens "a license to murder" and provokes "vigilante justice."
"The laws are not the kind of laws a civilized society should have and the [NRA] should be ashamed of themselves," scolded Bloomberg at a press conference in Washington, D.C. "This has nothing to do with gun-owners’ rights. This has nothing to do with the Second Amendment."
More than 20 states have a so-called "Stand Your Ground" law in place, including Florida where 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was killed in February.
Weeks after growing outrage and protests across the country, today special prosecutor Angela Corey announced a second-degree murder charge against George Zimmerman over the deadly incident. At the time of the murder, local police didn't press charges against him, citing the law.
The National Urban League, the NAACP, the National Action Network and ColorOfChange.org also support the effort.

When are Democrats going to start calling out Republicans for the Fascists they really are?
there is no reason to wait for dems to call reps names. and vice versa. unless youre rip van winkle theyve been doing it for decades.
Bruce, I wish I knew. I really do. Go and read stuff on right wing web sites. Sick people.
Try the continued calls for revolution and blood in the streets by the "New Black Panther's Radio daily, even after Angel Corey state there would be calm now after she set loose the "wheels of justice" to roll over Zimmerman during the next two years or so! That would surely make your hero Thurgood Marshall sick to his stomach and soul, no doubt, Pat! The trouble with sharoening the knife of racism is that its two edged, and cuts both ways. Where is Ange Corey's hoped for calm in the body politic. All she has accomplished is to put the lowered fire of foolisly raised expectations under the body poliyic, and it will in due time come to a catastrophic boil, therefore.
IMHO, this is one of the most ridiculous laws that can easily be abused and I cite another case, that of the killing of Daniel Adkins, a 29 year old man, with the mental capacity of a 12 year old, walking his dog. The name of the killer remains undisclosed by the police, but he was driving, with his girlfriend, out of a drive-through before a verbal altercation with Daniel commenced; as far as I can ascertain, no physical contact was made, but Daniel was shot and killed. I have no doubt, as with the Zimmerman case, evidence is being collected to prove probable cause before the driver is arrested and I also have no doubt there are many more like or similar to this case, where the statute is being used as an erroneous defence, putting a license in the hands of gun owners to kill another.
i agree, this law is wrong.
SeeMeRoar, I hope the Justice Department does a thorough job investigating what happened in Sanford. They had no intention of arresting Zimmerman and that is just hard to believe.
With the arrest of this man, hopefully now Trayvon's parents will get justice for their son's death. It's the only thing he ask.
Mental deficit in an adult does not excuse physical assault.
Bloomberg is simply looking to ride this now hot issue on just one of his self serving justifications to run as an Independent for President this year, thinking the fat cats on Wall Street wil bankroll him (if he doesn't want to invest any of his billions, of course)
Just what we will need, another bleeding heart liberal in National politics.
Now, lets hear from Sherrif Joe on the other side of this issue. Geeze Louise, I love this country!
I'm glad someone with national recognition is helping to expose this, and other ALEC driven laws that have crept into the system, seemingly under the radar. This case turns the light on, and now we are watching the scampering. We know where the nest is.
As for running for prez as an indie this go-round, ... Seriously???
I'm kind of glad I HAVE a heart that is able to bleed. It's called taking care of each other. I hear rumors that something like that is mentioned in some bible if you follow that stuff. I feel sorry for those on the extreme right who wear that religion on their sleeve, yet are voicing a constant SYIGM attitude (IGM=I Git Mine). Almost seems they suffer from some form of paranoid schizophrenia.
And yes, given the state of the Pub party, I would prefer more libs in ALL levels of politics. The new batch of Pubs that are already in office are doing some real damage.
As for MY Sheriff Joke (that's how you spell Sheriff btw), he is our own special version of Boss Hogg. He is a caricature of the extreme right, and funny to watch. If he doesn't end up in prison, he just might run for some political office someday. I'll place odds on prison.
Nice post Sane Central ad I agree. We need more politicians speaking out against this insane law, which was only put in place to make the NRA happy. Unfortunately we have too many willing politicians to kiss up to them, at our children's peril.
Bloomberg said this type of legislation gives citizens "a license to murder" and provokes "vigilante justice." "The laws are not the kind of laws a civilized society should have and the [NRA] should be ashamed of themselves," scolded Bloomberg.
Bloomberg is absolutely correct!
Dorothea from Germany,
Absolutely, Bloomberg is correct. I'm tired of our politicians doing whatever the NRA sees fit to do. It's incomprehensible that they behave this way.
@ Pat: Why does the NRA have so much power in the USA? I mean, do the gun freaks really outnumber the sane people?
Sane Central:
I'm not religious, except for my loving worship of Mother Nature that is. I've had a successful professional career helping others in mental health and individual family therapies, and education, and am now happily retired. I've been put in the position of having to protect myself from injury with my fists before, and also protect my life and a loved one's life and my property with a simple display of a legal firearm, long before any Stand Your Ground law was passed in any state. I can honestly say I would have been, and still am, ready to use that firearm to end any threat of violence to me or others or theft or destruction of my property by criminal(s).
That's not in any way a big issue in my life. I don't go out of my way to meet trouble. But if trouble ever comes to find me or my loved ones, it will be met with the force I decide upon, no one else makes that decision for me. And let the chips fall where they might!
On another thread dealing with the CT State legislature controlled by bleeding heart liberal politicians revoking the death penalty, I addressed in some detail the horrors disasterously experienced by another Connecticut family some 4 years ago. Three innoncent females, one an 11 year old child died excrutiating deaths after a day of sexual assaults and terroism. Only the very badly beaten husband in that home invasion escaped the arsons' firey death at the hands of two animals, but they surely took from him his life too that fateful day! He just has to go on living with the terrible daily memories of the pain and suffering let loose by these two degenerate animals, hearing in his bleeding badly beaten head that day as he was tied up in the downstairs recreation room as the women and loves of his life were raped and killed; over and over the agonizing screams of his wife and daughters that suffered so horribly. Now, the popular cause celebre of the bleeding hearts provides those worthless hell bound scum given the death penalty after growing fat in prision for the past four years the opportunity to have their lives saved in appeals given this new law, and for what end? Redemption?
Dorthea knows of this representative case, as she blogged about those theives, rapists, and killer's "human rights"; that attitude, and that eventuality leads one to steel themselves to say we will use all due force not to give criminals attacking us our ours a chance to prevail, whether there is a Stand Your Ground Law or not to protect our rights to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness!
Crybabies
To protect yourself in your own home is totaly different from someone taking the law into their hands.
Taking the law into your own hangs and protecting yourself and others is, my friend, much the same thing, cloaks of protection cut from the same cloth known as self defense and defense of others.
