It's been 40 days since George Zimmerman shot and killed an unarmed, 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. On Tuesday, a grand jury will begin meeting to decide whether Zimmerman should be indicted and face a trial.
This week, Zimmerman bolstered his defense team by adding a new attorney: Hal Uhrig, a veteran criminal defense lawyer. If you're from the Orlando-area, you may recognize Uhrig. He worked as an analyst for a local news station during the Casey Anthony trial. A former Gainesville, Florida police officer and former Florida assistant attorney, his breadth of experience contrasts that of his co-counsel, Craig Sonner, who has never represented a client facing a homicide charge. Sonner will forever live in Last Word infamy after skipping out on our interview, leaving Lawrence O’Donnell to question an empty chair.
This week, Zimmerman’s new defense team made the media rounds to explain what George Zimmerman says happened the night of February 26. This morning, they appeared on CBS' This Morning, where both Uhrig and Sonner maintained that their client acted in self-defense, citing Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law, which allows a person to use deadly force if he/she feels in danger of great physical harm or fears for his/her life.
Then Uhrig said this: "We're familiar with the shaken baby syndrome: you shake a baby. The brain shakes around inside the skull. You can die."
Shaken baby syndrome is a serious form of child abuse that according to the National Institutes of Health usually affects infants and children up to age five.
Uhrig went on to say, "When someone’s pounding your head into the ground, and you've already had your nose broken, you can be in reasonable fear for great bodily harm, which is what the Florida statute calls for. And if you think you’re about to lose your life or to be seriously injured like that, you’re absolutely entitled to take the necessary action to stop it."
Host Charlie Rose followed up by asking, "Are you saying that's what Mr. Zimmerman said — he thought he was in fear of losing his life and so he shot Trayvon Martin?"
Uhrig responded, "I can confirm that without telling you any specific words, that’s exactly what he thought."

I took the 911 call with the most audio informatiion regarding screams, pulled down some of the louder noises (the actual shot and a few times the woman caller gets a bit loud) so they don't hurt you while listening to the softer noises... Then ran it at a slower speed and pitch corrected it 100 percent true. Anyone with an ear for music can tell not a note has been changed.. Digital affords you this luxury. In the analog days we had to physically slow the tape/medium down and you lose pitch and clarity.

It seems to me that the so called injuries on Zimmerman's head aren't in the right spot if his head was repeatedly pounded on the concrete. Those injuries appear at the top of this head not at the back where you would expect to find them. I always thought that they were self inflicted to cover his self defense story. I wonder if anyone investigating this has thought to check the butt of Zimmerman's gun for any blood or tissue.

Zimmerman never said anything about shaken baby syndrome. His attorney was attempting to explain the seriousness of having your nead pounded into the ground or sidewalk repeatedly and simly comparing that to what occurs to the brain during shaken baby syndrome. Both these men called policel both than heard the shot. Oh yes, Martin wore a gray sweatshirt, Zimmer,man wore a red and black trimmed jacket. Zimmerman was treated by EMT's at the scene. The police report said that Zimmerman was bleeding frm the nose and the back of his head. The funeral director said Martin's face did not appear as if he had been hit at any time. So, just what is so hard to believe when the preponderance of the evidence points to Martin being the agressor on top of Zimmerman beating him? Are you really all that dense?

What we have heard was the call from Zimmerman to the Police Dispatcher, and we know NBC News distorted this record of that call to make it look as if Zimmerman was racially profiling Martin who he was observing walking through the darkened back yards of houses in the rain, looking into those houses from the night. I guess that would have made the two police officer in the tape of the police station that were escorting Zimmerman to have been over 400 pounds, as he was only 2/3rd of the size of them.
The "experts" that a newspaper hired found the screams were a 48% match to Zimmermans voice. They had no recorded voice of Martin to compare that too.
Perhaps the real issue here is that someone screaming for help under duress has a voice sounding unlike his normal speaking voice? Ya' think?

Sorry, I'm with the doctor on this one. As a child abuse expert I am very familiar with shaken baby syndrome. It has to do with the fully developed muscles in the neck and cranial anatomy of an adult as opposed to that of an infant. Regardless of the weight and height differences in this case, it's an impossible defense.

Even without them, however, it seems improbable that a confident, stocky-build man, with a gun in his holster, would need to beg for help -- notwithstanding the claims of Zimmerman, his father and his brother. Our understanding of human nature and common sense tells us that such cries would come from someone who is severely threatened and acutely aware of his imminent death.
Any doubts of this are removed by merely listening to those multiple “help, help” pleas loud enough to be picked up during the 911calls. Aside from their heart-wrenching intensity, we also note that these cries go on for over a minute. Was Zimmerman telling Martin during that time that he was about to pull the trigger? Why else would Martin need to plead for help with such desperation?
If Zimmerman was threatening to shoot Martin in those two minutes before we hear the shot, what we have then is a cold blooded murder – and by one clever enough to now use our racial divide to get away with it. What is so big about a 5'9" 28 year old...stocky? In the Police video tape he was no more than two thirds the size of the two officers escorting him to the police station.
I suppose if you beleive as MSNBC keeps repeating that Zimmerman was 250 lbs, that the police officers weighed in about 400 pounds. Martin was 6'3" tall, over 160lbs and had just finished a football season in highschool where he would have been conditioning in the weight room. He had bragged just recently to a cousin onm his twitter accoun on how he had "swung" on a school bus driver. He was suspended from school for three separtate offenses on three occasions, defacing with grafetti public property, suspicion of theft of jewlery while possessing a burgulary tool, a large screw driver, and for possession of drug paraphenelia and marijuna residue in his book bag for the last offense that got him kicked out of his mother's home and given shelter at his father's girlfriends home.
See above the the eyewitness accounts of the fight in progress. Your simple minded conjectures to the contrary, Martin was a trouble, out of control youthful offender who thought he was a hard ass, and he got himself shot for his actions that night.

I have been watching Lawrence's coverage of this case as well as CNN's and even Faux (Fox) News' and, personally, want to see the following questions answered by Zimmerman.
1) Why, after being told by 911 dispatch not to, did you continue to follow Mr. Martin? It is CLEARLY indicated if you look at where the shooting happened that Mr. Zimmerman left his vehicle and followed Mr. Martin around the end of the condominiums and down the pathway where the shooting occurred. This is probably where we hear the heavy breathing in the 911 tape as he is more than likely jogging to catch up with Mr. Martin. Why? He was pretty much told by 911 to back off from following the person he had spotted and to allow authorities to take care of the situation.
2.) Why, if Mr. Zimmerman's nose had been broken and his head bashed it to the sidewalk as he claims, did he not seek medical attention at a hospital? Mr. Zimmerman, according to his attorney's, family, and "friends" were in fear for his life because he was being "savagely" beaten by Mr. Martin which was why he felt he had to shoot Mr. Martin. If he was so "savagely" beaten that his head was cut up and he was bleeding from his nose, why did he not insist on being transported to a hospital to ensure he had not sustained a concussion or broken nose? (I would, but that is just me...and yes, even if I had just been through a life-or-death struggle). Instead, again according to his attorney, friends, and family he waited 12 or more hours to seek medical attention (of which, at least at this time, there has been no proof provided either verbally or written of the truth of the injuries other than then the cuts and bleeding nose noted on the police report... That though is his prerogative.)
3) If the confrontation occurred as Mr. Zimmerman stated and Mr. Martin was on top of him then why was Mr. Martins body found lying face down? And why is their no indication of blood on Mr. Zimmerman's clothing stated in the police report as well as a report of the clothing being confiscated by police? I would expect with as close a shot as Mr Zimmerman's statement says occured there would have been some blood spray on his clothing. However, I feel that the shot probably was not as close as Mr. Zimmerman wants us to believe. Currently we only have the Funeral Home Directors comments concerning the state of Mr. Martins body and not the Medical Examiners report so I have to base my conjecture on that. What I find most interesting about the Funeral Directors comments is that he saw no apparent exit wound on Mr. Martins back, only the entrance wound on the front. While the Funeral Director is not an M.E. they do handle bodies often and have to be thorough in prepping them for burial. An M.E. report would be very helpful here but the eyewitness view of the Funeral Director works even though it is not official. To me, in layman terms, that sounds like there was some distance between Mr. Zimmerman and Mr. Martin when the shot occured because the bullet did not have a chance to exit. How far distant someon would have to be for the bullet from the type of weapon Mr. Zimmerman used, I have no idea but surely at point blank range, as his description has it, there would have been a VERY visible exit wound no matter what muscle and tissue were in the way.
I also have the following questions for the Sanford Police Dept, at least in the realm of the prosecution of this case.
1) Why did they feel that there Homicide Detective was wrong (He wanted to press at least second degree manslaughter charges on Mr. Zimmerman but was overruled)? Was it solely based on Mr Zimmerman's statement or were there other mitigating factors?
2) Exactly who was at the police station the night that Mr. Zimmerman was brought in after the shooting? And why? We have conjecture that the DA was there, the Police Chief was there, and possibly Mr. Zimmerman's father was there. If they were, Why? This seems overkill for what is supposed to be a simple "Stand your ground" shooting. If not then this has to be cleared up with a simple and concise statement that none of these people were there. That has not happened which of course leads the public to believe that what has been put out is true.
I will personally say, if I were on the jury for this one, that I would probably vote to convict Mr. Zimmerman of second degree manslaughter. And yes, I understand you have to convict someone "beyond a reasonable doubt". Unless convincing evidence comes forward, I feel, based on the evidence so far presented, that Mr. Zimmerman followed Mr. Martin, confronted him, they got into an argument and scuffle, Mr Zimmerman pulled his gun on Mr. Martin, Mr Martin, scared started screaming for someone to help while Mr. Zimmerman told him to shut up. Somehow during this small bit of time Mr Zimmerman and Mr Martin broke apart then Mr Martin lunged at Mr. Zimmerman who then shot Mr Martin, spinning him away to land on his face. tMr Zimmerman probably then went over to Mr. Martin to check him. I have listened to both side's and I am sorry to say Mr. Zimmerman's story is fairly full of holes. I see Mr Zimmerman as a "cop want-to-be" who was trying to prove himself to the local police department and now he is having to deal with the consequences.

George's friends are saying that he is crying every single day. Well, Trayvon will never have the opportunity to cry, smile, buy candy, or walk down the street ever again because "GEORGE" decided that he was suspicious and needed to be hunted down and killed! I am not an Al Sharpton fan, but this is not about Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson. This is about that ugly, insidious, little secret in little minds called racism! I am sickened by this story. Trayvon was a kid, a minor, not old enough to buy alcohol, or even to vote. It is irrelevant when you are over 6 feet tall and you are confronted with a gun! George's attorneys are building a denfense on stand your ground law and invoking the shaken baby syndrome. Are you kidding me? George clearly stated on the 911 call, "They always get away!" He made sure he did not let Trayvon get a way or make it home to his family. Oh, but stand your ground obviously did not apply to Trayvon. I try very hard to keep the race card at the bottom of the deck, but race is at the core of this case. I am glad Trayvon's parents did not allow the Sanford Police Department to sweep this case under the rug. Of course, George should not be tried in the media, but all of the media attention is because the police did not do their job initially. George should have been charged with homicide the night of the shooting.
To George Zimmerman, show me your doctor's reports on your injuries, prove to me you were the one on that tape screaming for help and not Trayvon, prove to me that Trayvon was on top of you when he was shot, and you were not on top of him as witnesses have stated. I don't think you can. I believe you refused that second ambulance and to be taken to the hospital on the night of the shooting because you knew the hospital's findings would not substantiate your story and may find that you were under the influence of alcohol. You did not want that in a written record! George, have you offered to take a polygraph test to prove you are telling the truth? I know it is not admissable in court, but in the court of public opinion it may shed some light on your credibility!

As a person who has been qualified to give expert testimony in court in child abuse cases, I can tell you on good authority, there is no way a normal adult can have shaken baby syndrome. For starters, the muscles in the neck that support the head are very, very weak, allowing the head to flop back and forth when being shaken. Also, a baby's brain has yet to fully fill the cranial cavity, so when the head strikes a wall or floor, the brain strikes the bone with much more force than it would for an older child or adult and blood vessels are torn, resulting in a pool of blood between the cranium and brain (subdural hematoma). Good luck finding a medical "expert" to back that theory up.
It was an analogy, not a medical statement of fact, meant to give an understanding that ones skull doesnt need to be fractured to cause momentary incapacitation or brain injury. Physical assault is not the kind of thing that innocent people do. Martin, all 6'3" and over 160 lbs was eyewitnessed by two adults whose statements to police identified Martin as the man beating 5'9" Zimmerman from a position on top of him as he, Zimmerman, lay prone on his back on the groundl they identidied the two struggling men by 1) the color of their clothing, and 2) their relative sizes to each other. Those are the facts of this case!
Zimmerman knows he is lying, he has some psychological issue and no one knows this better than his parent. Problem he has been breed in him by that

Well, either way this case goes,wether or not Zimmerman is convicted or let loose, his life is over. There are people out there that are ready to mete out what they consider to be justice. There are others out there that think differently. He is in hiding right now and will probably remain so for the rest of his life. $10,000.00 dollars for his being found and arrested being offered, I would consider is small to the $$ amounts being offered behind the curtain just to find and hand him over to others who would just like to get their hands on him. Mr. Longley, One must wonder why you are so adamant about George Zimmerman's case? The fact of the matter is that it does not matter what Treyvon had or had not done, in his short life. If he smoked pot, wore gangster clothes, was on the football team and in excellent physical condition, George Zimmerman had no cause to confront him and ultimately take his life.
George needs to face the fact that because of his rash, and obviously racist opinion, the life of this child has been lost. His parents will never know what he could have become. The anguish of burying their child will haunt them until the day they die.

And as Obama is the father of a young teen and a pre-teen daughter it provided further play to the carefully nurtured false image of Martin as 12 year old youth, similar to the picture that MSNBC chose to represent him at the top of this page, strategically juxtaposed with that of a mug shot of Zimmerman taken at the time of his arrest at age 21 for an alcohol related incident on charges of interferance and resistance of police without violence, which was dropped without a trial or finding when Zimmerman did agree to complete a remediation program for alcohol related offenders similar to a driving under the influence charge resolution. That picture of Zimmerman was even older than the 5 year previously snapped one of Martin, some 2 years older to be exact, from 2005. It's also the basis of the reports heard variously that Zimmerman weighed from 220, to 240, to 250 pounds thrown about on this blog and on the "news" outlets.
Ya' think the use of those photos is accidental, without the desire to have an intended affect on their viewers? NO? Of course not! So did you think Obama's choosing to make remarks on Martin and his shooting was accidental, or calculated also to have an affect on the viewers and listeners? The latter option, of course, and he should have known better his being a lawyer and all, and a professor of law on top of that. But the President is a politician, and he knows he is in need of fence mending with the black communities that have suffered so much under the policies and practices of his Administration economically. Jeanne, it was very much the duty of the neighborhood watch officer to observe and report Martin, and if he was in the act of breaking in or commiting theft it would have been in his authority to attempt at citizen's apprehension, as he had done on one previous occasion, as credited by Sanford Police.
There is not a single bit of evidence that he initiated the confrontation with Martin,there is also no evidence that Martin did initiate the confrontation as Zimmerman's statement to police provides. Where is you evidence that Zimmerman had a racist view of Martin, other than media attempt to distort the taped telephone converstation with the police dispatcher to try to assert such?
And the character issues are very much the very thing that a jury of Zimmerman's peers would hear if this went to a Grand Jury for indictment or A Trial by Jury; they certainly can not be separated from the case, especially if Zimmerman appears before a Grand Jury with with his attorneys, or before a Jury in any trial if he was to be indicted. That is how our system of justice works, not by trial in the distored, hysterical court of public opinion ginned up by new media attempting to get their miserable rating out of the cellar, and sell their product, and simultaneously serve their leftist leanings to help to distract from the real issues before this nation in this election year by providing a circus, that also rallies a portion of Obama's base that had been sliding away from him as the prolonged recession so hurts their communities more than any other.

Keith Longey It was very much NOT the duty of a neighborhood watch person to confront or apprehend a "suspect". Their duty is to observe and if they have any concerns about an individual or individuals, they are to contact the police via 911 and let them handle it. It is also NOT allowable for a neighborhood watch person to be armed. So why was Zimmerman packing a 9mm?? He is not the police! Also according to you, Zimmerman previously had performed a citizen's arrest, as noted by the Sanford PD. Could it be that Zimmerman was eager to be heroic and save the day again? And it all went terribly wrong?
