Ohio State Senator Nina Turner – who introduced a bill that would require men seeking Viagra to undergo a stress test and meet with a sex therapist — joined The Last Word on Thursday. It's a bill MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell referred to as the "single funniest piece of legislation" he had ever read.
Senator Turner outlined what would be more of the necessary requirements for men to obtain the erectile dysfunction medication, from discussing "the possible side effects and risks" to "alternative therapy, such as natural remedies or celibacy."
"We should be absolutely embarrassed as a nation that we are going backwards in time instead of forward," Turner said. "And to treat women as if we’re feeble-minded and incapable of making decisions for our bodies is shameful."

As a man I have no problem with the bill, But I do have a problem with those women that choose to abuse this bill claim violance when infact there was none. far to many men are jailed every year not as a direct result of this bill but as a result of Womenclaiming violance and the states knowing there was no violance that took place in the first place costing millions not only to the tax payers but to the actual Victim in some cases being the male I myself was a victim of this myself it is sad when all of the facts are staring you in the face and the state chooses to ignore them because of a bill pass that was passed on a federal leval Shouldn't the states be required to look at each individual case and the evidence and make a determination?? As I said I have no problem with the bill/Law but in an effort to restore some Humanity I think there should be punishment included for those that abuse this Law Further more any Man that Puts his hands on any Women in anger or Rage is a COWARD !
when I was an 18 year old page at channel five when it was WNEW-NY and before it became FOX, I met an array of entertainers on the Mid-day show with Bill Boggs. I was able to meet Ms. Carol Burnnett, the Lucy of my child hood, and she was as she was on stage, kind and genuine and perked up when I mentioned we shared the same birthday on the 26th. . I got to meet Ed Asner, who was very much like his own character on The MTM show, Lou,only less intimidating, and after hearing more than twice what a great fan I was, he finally said, "All right, kid... you like me, I like you.. that's enough and allowed me to tag along and take his picture that evening when he appeared on SNL. And then I met my movie idol, Mr. funny man sight-gag prince him self. The very one who's movies up until then I had seen at least twice. I was coming face to face with.... HEY LADY! With the better half of Lewis & Martin, or so I thought. There I was inches from him and I had a few words prepared for him but could not get the words out, instead I managed a few stuttering words as I stood before the God of laughter, when he got board and snapped, "Come on get on with it... I don't have all day".... and with that brushed passed me along with his entourage. Happy Birthday, I hope you have gotten better and nicer with age now that thirty years have passed since that unforgettable day you crushed my belief that you were a good clown and not just a nasty man with make up on his face.
Sincerely,
Harry Mena
I love this new "Viagra Bill," I saw Nina Turner last night on the show and she was brilliant! I have been hoping someone would introduce a bill like this. One thing I would like to see added is that men must submit a valid marriage license to obtain viagra with their health insurance prescription plan. We surely don't want to promote promiscuity or have tax payers paying for men to be having random sex out of wedlock! Wink, wink.
Great comment - of course Catholic professionals, priests, monks, etc would have no use for viagra at all, I assume.
As a Canadian, I watch the debate south of the border over contraception with a bit of an ironically disgusted raised eyebrow. There is really nothing new about this debate except that it has been exploded into the open, rather than kept within a small Christian group that wants to impose a specific moral attitude on people. It's their answer to eventual conversions that would otherwise be rejected if they were overt about evangelization.
Now, Rick Santorum, Rush, and the whole Right Wing have had their real intentions bared and denuded in the public forum. There is no reasonableness about Santorum's claims as Catholic teaching. Even Cardinal Dolan would have major problems with some of the more outrageous rhetoric Santorum uses. For one thing, it isn't Catholic doctrine to deny healthcare to the poor and less fortunate; and even Cardinal Dolan would never rhetorically conflate abortion with contraception--they are two different issues within the policy of the Church.
The Church does have legitimate questions about its teaching being misinterpreted and misused by Santorum, Gringrinch, et. al. Dolan has problems with the politicization as he sees it. He wants healthcare for people who need it as much as any person with a morally informed conscience. He would gladly sit down with the President's team on these issues; knowing that contraception cannot be imposed at law for everyone, he is content to hold Catholics to Church teaching in good conscience. He will not endorse state laws limiting healthcare because he knows that he just does not have the ability to hold everyone, non-Catholics included, to Church teaching. And he doesn't want to when it will harm the reputation of the Church.
It's just another shot in the war. This "war against women" began with the dehumanization of women in poverty. It was so successful that even this generation of progressives considers it a non-issue that we now have policies (against poor women) that actually violate international human rights standards. "First they came for..." When we allow one segment of society to be mindlessly scapegoated, another will be targeted. It just happens that now its the turn of middle class women to be the target.
I have a solution : All women should go on a sex strike for as long as this war on women continues. That is right men, NO SEX FOR YOU until you come to your senses and stop deciding what is good or not for women.
I a week or so, I predict this issue will be no more.
I appreciate your giving air time to this issue. However, I was shocked that you referred to the proposed Viagra legislation as one of the most humorous bills in a long time (or words to that effect). There's nothing funny about this for women. You laugh nervously at the idea that men would have to go through all these tests before getting a prescription. Women do not find it funny at all. Having had some of the procedures being imposed on women (not prior to an abortion, but for a medical condition), trust me, it's not something any woman would enjoy or consider trivial. Men have NO CLUE and/or don't care what they impose on women, and then they think it's a joke when the tables are turned. Thank goodness we have women in the legislature who can at least try to help you understand. It's No Joke!!
Thank you Lawrence for airing all these issues affecting women over this past week. I'm really sorry for my angry comment last week (or early this week) after you showed a Rush video on and used it as a legit politicial opinion. Rush calls himself an entertainer so his "on air" words have no place in the legit political arena, imho. Plus I really can't stand even hearing Rush's voice any longer. I did not stop watching right away and I'm so glad I did keep watching your show. I just caught up with viewing them all on my DVR. You had some really great shows this past week and you certainly went all out to support women. You are the BEST!! Thank you so very much.
I think that the idea of the legislation on viagra and men makes a point - it seems so silly, just as silly as the anti contraception laws being proposed and/or voted on. What are these men thinking.
No matter what the current batch of republican presidential candidates may be suggesting - the idea from Ron Paul on is that somehow contraception for women is at the root of all of their perceived social ills. At last in the Catholic church there are leadership roles for women (mother superiors, abbesses, etc); the Mormon church has no place of any kind for women to have leadership roles at any level. It is who they are. So of you think that Romney is a moderate just faking it as a conservative you need to think again.
