Lawrence O'Donnell. Ann Coulter. Debating. Live. Happening, for real. Sunday!
Lawrence broke the news about his upcoming debate at George Washington University with the conservative pundit in Thursday's Rewrite segment. This event is co-sponsored by GW’s College Republicans, College Democrats, Student Association, Program Board and the Young America’s Foundation.
We've been getting many questions about this event. Will be streamed online? How can I get tickets? Here's more info from GW. It's only open to students and its campus community.
The inevitable clashes on stage are all for a charitable cause. Part of the proceeds from the debate will go to the KIND fund, Kids in Need of Desks. The joint program between MSNBC and Unicef builds desks in Africa and delivers them to African schools. Find out how you can get involved by visiting LastWordDesks.msnbc.com or by calling 1-800-FOR-KIDS to donate.

Lawrence..now you are really my hero! How you will be able to stomach her spum her vile rubbish for 60-90 minutes is beyond my comprehension. It takes the term "cast iron stomach" to a new-demented realm.
R.K. Stockton
RK, youo have got it right. Anne Coulter is one of the most disgusting people ever to enter the political discourse.
I'd love to see tho vile creature actually run for office in South Florida. Can you imagine how she would be skewered? That would shut her filthy mouth forever.
However, she's a perfect icon in a way for Florida. She's the epitome of the off-the-track, crack head stripper. Blonde, thin and utterly crazy. (Apologies to the med school girls - and there are some - who work as FL strippers.)
No Way! Really? That will be priceless. I can't even wait. There has to be a way to throw a, "super-debate party," for this! OK, we'll have to have airsick-bags for the spin from the right...
Why waste your breath on her? She is Rush Limbaugh in drag.
Man, I wish I'd said that...
I dunno though... Lawrence sometimes doesn't fare so well with bimbo lawyers...
Look at how he lost it with Orly Taitz...
(Must resist urge to insert blonde lawyer joke)
Lawrence should debate Coulter because Limbaugh is too cowardly to face him. Coulter's act is filled with smarmy slurs and innuendo with a pretense at honesty. Lawrence will strip her of her pretense and leave her babbling invective. Coulter is braver than Limbaugh but also has much less to defend.
Lumby ( Limbaugh) will never debate Lawrence or anyone else with a brain because it will be like Lumby fighting with his hands tied behind his back.
Is this going to be available via livestream on the web?
I think that Lawrence may have trouble with this. He'll use facts and Anne will make up bull turd and insults. There are no rules when you're able to pull fiction out of your rump. I think that the advantage may be in Mr. Coulters favour for these reasons.
I hope we are going to be able to see this at some point in the future. 'Can't go to Washington :o(
Some may say, "Why bother?" Coulter will not be swayed of convinced of anything other than O'Donnell misguided perceptions (her thinking, I am certain, not my own!). But the debate is not, nor has ANY debate ever been, about convincing or educating your opponent, it is about the audience! Can they be swayed, educated, or informed?
Well, let's look at our collective ammunition, shall we?
On Coulter's side, we have fear ... fear ... anger ... hatred ... oh and more fear.
On O'Donnell's side we have reason, rationality, courage, and compassion (am thinking of the KIND fund -- shameless plug).
I dunno ... seems to me given the complexion of recent audience's in GOP debates ... and some of them will be in the audience I am sure, supporting Coulter's message, "Let him die," and "God hates gays," etc, it may be a close call.
But the debate is not entirely for them ... it's for the rest of us ... you know ... and the rest of the GOP audiences who did not shame those people into silence with steady stares and the "Oh please," look, let alone verbalizing their collective dissent from such extreme and inhumane statements.
The debate is (or I would so hope) for an opportunity to see two well educated and articulate adults discuss in real terms the issues facing our nation from day to day. Remarkably, I could not think of a better representative for either side of the argument; liberal or conservative.
I just hope that while the two you you are hashing out the issues you remember an old saying. "In a debate there are three sides to consider. The positions of the opponents, and the Truth. The Truth will out." Or so we can only hope.
Good luck Lawrence. According to ancient Greek accounts, those battling Harpies were often accosted by a vile stench that exudes from them as a result of their great evil. And the Bard has written that no mortal weapon may cleave their acrimonious flesh.
But then, the weapon you shall use shall not be one of steel or crafted by mortal hands. You shall be equipped with your words! Words have vast power, and are capable of causing great hardship or benison. I pray you have the Last Word!
Thanks for taking the time to speculate about the character of this event. I have never before read any 'Vine post where someone used the term "benison."
I agree that this will be similar to a confrontation between a Southern Baptist preacher from Alabama, skilled at using the epigram to communicate volumes, and the philosopher, skilled at using encyclopedic arguments to communicate paragraphs. In a war of sound bites, Coulter may be the apparent victor, while in a war of comprehensive discourse, O'Donnell should prevail.
What a shame most of us will not enjoy seeing and hearing the entire event.
I emailed the P.O.C. for the debate between you and Coulter at GWU this weekend to ask if this was going to be broadcast online. She replied today simply saying "Unfortunately, no. Sorry!" Grrrrr.
Good luck Lawrence!!!!!!! I hope you smash that ##!!### crazy woman like the bug she is............
Maybe she'll take over for Rush when his gone!!!!! and FIRED! She is just as crazy!
He who sups with the devil must use a long spoon.
Lawrence are you seriously going to debate her or you're just gonna hit on her, I mean hit her hard.
Cindy, I was just skimming the rest of the comments after making my principal points, but you touched the button.
Coulter relies as much on her looks as on her sill with invective.
And most of us who figure that out want to smash her perfect nose.
Oh, Lawernce, please don't fall for that sinewy body in the short, sleevless dress! And that hair toss, oh, she just makes those interviewers fall under her spell. Please be careful, she's got all the magic working til then. Stay strong Dude, be critical, and don't let her get away with ANYTHING!
It is for a good cause-KIND fund.
If you are going to talk about seperation of chruch and state, here are some good ideas.
Religion: A Cancer In Public Education
Before anyone becomes emotional or defensive about the title, let me explain what I am discussing. This is not a criticism of anyone’s belief in God or any power greater than ourselves. It is not an attack on Christianity or Mormonism or any specific religion. Nor is this a discussion as to whether there is or is not a God.
Let’s be very clear, what I call religion in this context are certain practices of churches and their attempts to control public education in violation of the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. Their aim is to control what children learn, what teachers teach and what the purposes of public education should be. They aim at total control of individual liberty.
What some churches do today is far removed from the teachings of great moral individuals like Abraham, Jesus, Mohammed, Gandhi, Switzer or King. Rather, they preach intolerance, scorn for those who believe differently than they do and rigid adherence to church power rather than to individual conscience. They preach hatred for their enemies, holiness of money and acceptance of racism. How often have you heard that Mormons are not Christians, that Jews are infidels, that Muslims are out to kill everyone or that the other religion is false and one’s God is better than the other person’s God.
Now let me discuss the central issue of this paper - religion as a cancer in pubic education. Religion, like cancer, attacks the various “organs” of public schools.
First is the attack on personal health. Religious extremists object to the teaching of sex education and any mention of contraceptive and the use of biological names of body parts. Knowledge of these topics, they claim, will lead to a greater number of young people to engage in sexual activity. The opposite is true. Knowledge prevents engagements in unhealthy sexual activities. It leads to a reduction of unwanted pregnancies. The healthy habits of young people improve greatly when they have knowledge of the dangers involved in pre-marital sex. The abstinence only sex education programs have been a miserable failure by any standard to measure their effectiveness. The health of our children is dependent on an understanding of how their bodies work - period.
Second there is the attack on science. Objections to the teaching of evolution, biology and anthropology are numerous and wide spread. The critics desire to submit creationism, intelligent design and original sin into the curriculum of the schools. All of these efforts are in contradiction to scientific knowledge and to the separation of church and state - as required by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. Critics certainly have the right to believe items based on faith; but there is no justification for teaching faith-based beliefs in public education.
Third there is the attacks on history. Attempts to “prove” that this nation was founded on Christian principles is a strong desire of public education critics. They try to establish that our Founding Fathers were devoted Christians or holy men who lived pure lives. History, however, is clear. Most “Founders” rarely attended church, owned slaves, and wrote very little about religious topics. Jefferson denied the deity of Jesus, Washington rarely attended church and often criticized it. Of the “Founders” only John Adams was a practicing Christian who professed his strong religious beliefs. Most of these men who revolted against England were Deists who insisted on the separation of church and state.
We as a nation are blessed to have an Amendment in our Constitution that requires the separation of government activities from personal actions. As individuals we can express our religious beliefs at anytime in any place. But schools, as a government service, cannot , and shall not, be involved in religious actions or the promotion of religious beliefs. To do so is to feed the cancer that will destroy public education. That is something that a democratic nation cannot allow to occur. And we should all be diligent to prevent misguided individuals from infecting our public schools with religious causes.
Amen to that!
Can't wait to watch this... Good Luck Lawrence !!! YES you CAN !!!
Why isn't GW streaming this? Don't they realize they'd get so much good cred from both Reds and Blues? I'm sure letting the nation see this woujld not hurt ticket sales (and why isn;t it free for GW students, but that's another topic). Itd be so much fun to see Coulter get hers: O'Donnell's facts vs. Coulter's world.
Not free for GW students because they are doing it as a fundraiser for the KIND fund, O'Donnell's favorite charity. No telling who Coulter will give her $ to….maybe Barnham and Bailey. O'Donnell is a class act. I was so impressed by him several years ago when he was a guest speaker in a C-Span program for students. And that was before I knew his vision of this country and the world matches my own. Now he's moved up to my "people I most admire" category.
It's not free for GW students because it's a fundraiser for the KIND Fund, O'Donnell's favorite charity. The fact that he's willing to debate Coulter should tell you how committed he is to the KIND Fund. No telling who she's going to give her $ to…maybe Barnham and Bailey, but certainly not to the dole.
The first time I watched O'Donnell was several years ago, when he shared his professional journey as a guest speaker on a C-Span program dedicated to students. I recognized his name; but that was about it. I was not only impressed with the variety of his experiences, but also by the natural manner in which he shared his story. And that was BEFORE I knew he shares my own political ideology. When I learned he and I see this country and the world through the same lens, I elevated him to my "people I most admire" category.
O'Donnell will be prepared, and with the truth. Coulter will be prepared, but with lies and hatred. Should be interesting.
Lawerence, Please confront Coulter over this quote from her CPAC Convention speech: "Voters with forty years of politically correct education are ecstatic to have the first black president. They just love the idea of it, even if we did get Flavor Flav instead of Thomas Sowell.”
Also her "OUR BlACKS" comment. Please say the following to her:
"Why do you insisit on implying that the over 90% of Blacks that DON"T support "YOUR BLACKS" are INFERIOR and therefore don't deserve your coveted "OUR BLACKS" designation?"
OR using her style of debating technique, put it hits way: 'Why do you portray over 90% of Blacks as "dumb niiggers" if they don't won't wrap themselves in your Conservative Confederate flag and those Whites who don't as "dumb @!$%# lovers?"
Please see my Open Salon article on this: "Herman 'Bigsby' Cain: 'Black White-Supremacist." Lots of good material to use. thanks!
Hey, could you at least stream it after the event?
It kind of defeats the purpose if this is only viewable by whoever can fit in that auditorium.
Thanks Lawrence and TLW team!
Seriously?! It's not okay to show us that this debate is happening and then not stream it or post it later. You could even post it and have people make a donation to K.I.N.D. before they can download it. Come on, man. This has to be amazing.
I wish they will change and see it is in everyone's interest to post the debate for all to view.
PLZ post
