Funny or Die has produced yet another PSA masterpiece, poking fun at the recent politicians and Republican presidential candidates' positions on female reproductive health. The actors, who include Don Cheadle, Judd Nelson of "The Breakfast Club" fame, and NBC's Parks and Recreation's Ron Swanson, portray Republicans who have proven that they truly believe women know absolutely nothing about their own reproductive health. These women's "health experts" prove their expertise, simply because "they're late middle-aged men who know the most about everything."
Today, the Senate blocked a Republican effort, known as the Blunt amendment, that would have let employers and health insurance providers deny coverage for contraceptives and other services to which they have religious or moral objections. It was defeated in a 51-48 vote.
So for all you women who have been fussing over this debate, quit your worrying, they've got this. Or as an alternative, you can just place aspirin between your legs, whatever that means.

Funny!!! : )

51-48? That's a little close for comfort...
Thank you Olympia Snow, and c'mon Bob Kerrey...
Didn't anyone raise the question of whether someone who had religious beliefs against blood transfusions might have the same argument as the idiots claiming their religion is under assault because of birth control?
Would it be possible to be honest about this whole contraception issue? It has been twisted by both side into an issue of fredom as well as a a women health issue which are both just talking points and deception that is masking real concerns that I have. If I understand the issue it is not that the contraception would be made available but instead the removal of the co-pay. So there would still be a co-pay for brand drugs and life saving drugs say if I had cancer, diabetes, hypertension and seniors who we are supposed to be helping are benefiting how since this does not effect hormone replacement therapy which people have lumped into this conversation and would still be covered.
Want to throw a few other points in the discussion that since I have been developing these products with the largest generic manufacturer of oral contraception products for twenty years. First, these products do have an impact on the environment with the majority of the contraception products being excreted. There are a significant number of published and peer reviewed studies that indicate that ground and surface water is contaminated by these products. Where are all the people worried about DDT and antibiotics in these discussions? Maybe we should sale them from the states using a co-pay and use the funds to fix our inadequate sewage treatment plants that do not remove these materials from thier discharge much like we use tabacco taxes for other purposes?
Does everyone realize that there is a discussion of risk to benefit of using many of the most popular oral contraception products such as Yaz and Yasmin and thier generic equivalents concerning breast cancer and blood clots. Would it be possible that these oral contraceptive that we are talking about and our government could be involved in the distribution for political gains could they also be listed as liable? Think the FDA is going to rule against these or since they are politically invested in the products now, will avoid lawsuit by allowing the drugs to stay on the market?
I have also read where that pharmacies are charging students and others $100 a month for the contraceptives. Does everyone realize that the wholesale price for the most expensive oral contractive is approximately $26 for a three month product and for an individual generic oral contraceptive compact is approximately $6. This is a scam by distributors and pharmacies to continue to recieve large sums of cash and the federal government getting involved to insure thier contributions being placed in the hands of the right politian.
Some of the largest contracts for these products owned by the company I work are for individual states that purchase these products and distribute for free.
My understanding is that this isn't, or shouldn't, be about religious freedom, or even healthcare at all. It's about employee rights. Republicans are supporting the idea of letting an employer decide whether or not the health insurance they provide for their employees covers birth control, based on their own "moral" beliefs. It's absurd! Health insurance is a benefit, in many cases a legally obligated benefit for employees. To me, benefits are part of your wage, so really employers just want the right to control what their employers do with their earnings... aka Bull@!$%#. Would they be so eager if it were a Jehovah's Witness employer denying coverage for blood transfusions, because JWs believe they are wrong?
Stephanie,
I think you have a good point but if that was either side of our political elites position they would have started out arguing that point. In fact, I feel that my mother should get her anti-rejection medications paid for before I believe that none hormone replacement therapy treatments are. Would you not agree that life saving treatments should be paid for first and then if money is left over then contraception and morning after pills? Or should we pay for contraception and morning after pills and let people starve to live?
I am not sure that discharging these into the environment is a good thing and not sure they are trying to benefit women as much as they are protecting thier seats or offices. I think people are falling into another debit ceiling or climate change debate with all the political double talk. One group is going to say they are taking money from seniors to give to woman and the other side is saying that they are taking from woman to give to seniors while in fact both sides are taking money from the distributers and pharmacies who are really getting all the money.
I just heard Rush Limbaugh's comments on contraception and I can not think of anything more vile. There is no reason or understanding of any such language being used on either side. I did not agree with the Ed Show doing such and I don't agree with anyone else saying such distrubing things. We need to stop everyone from stopping discussion by using these kinds of statements. This should include all forms of name calling even the elitist and demeaning stupidity and intellegence statements, racial slurs and the like.
smile :-)
I would like to hear some comment on the possibility of a Christian Science employer. According to this religion, human intervention in the healing process is totally out of the question, all healing comes from God. I believe that would eliminate any question of employer health insurance responsibility for any employee condition.
I had the same thought... Imagine an employer who believed blood transfusions were wrong...
That's not Don Cheadle, that's Tim Meadows!
That is not Don Cheadle!!!!
Funny....
