Mitt Romney at a campaign rally in Bexley, Ohio on Wednesday.
It's been another slip-up day for Willard M. Romney. First, he said today in an interview he's opposed to the Senate amendment which would allow employers to deny coverage for birth control.
"I'm not for the bill. But, look, the idea of presidential candidates getting into questions about contraception within a relationship between a man and a woman, husband and wife, I'm not going there," he told a Ohio news station, one day after beating the socially conservative Rick Santorum in the Arizona and Michigan primaries. It's on camera.
Romney's campaign quickly walked back his comments in a statement to TPM, saying "the way the question was asked was confusing," a spokesman told TPM. "Governor Romney supports the Blunt Bill because he believes in a conscience exemption in health care for religious institutions and people of faith."
Romney himself tried to clear up any confusion.
"I didn't understand his question. Of course, I support the Blunt amendment," Romney said later today in a radio interview with the Howie Carr Show. "I thought he was talking about some state law that prevented people from getting contraception...I thought it was some Ohio legislation where employers were prevented from providing contraceptives and so I talked about contraceptives and so forth so I really misunderstood the question."
The Blunt amendment, which would override President Obama's hotly debated contraception rule, gives employers the right to refuse to cover any medical issue that it finds objectionable for moral or religious reasons.
The Senate could vote on the amendment as early as tomorrow.

Talk about a Blunt Instrument.
How many men, women and children in America will die if this Blunt Instrument amendment passes in the U.S. Senate tomorrow?
It's astounding to see how low the vetting bar is constantly reset for this guy. How his campaign team can sleep at night is beyond comprehension. No doubt his dog would agree.
Sarah Palin just had a sex change minus the mom jeans!
Yeah, answering questions is hard stuff. Hurts the brain.
Reality check -- Romney, in a momentary lapse, allowed his conscience and judgement to influence his decision-making process. However, soon thereafter he recovered and returned to reciting the scripted talking point intended to pander to sanctimonious social conservatives.
In an effort to garner support from both moderates and tea party/conservative extremists, Mitt has been flip-flopping more frequently than a freshly-hooked fish on land.
What if my employer finds it immoral to pay for my heart bypass? I mean, I know he doesn't have one.
Gentlemen - I believe you have our UNDIVIDED attention. The women of this country see these actions for EXACTLY what they are: TAKING AWAY A WOMAN'S RIGHT TO CHOOSE .... and throwing up any barrier they can to interfere with those rights....
ONCE AGAIN - for those who have great difficulty in understanding .....
This has NOTHING to do with Freedom of Religion .... if you work directly for a church - they can discriminate however they choose - according to their barbaric theocracy...
HOWEVER - if that religion chooses to operate a business FOR PROFIT - in the PUBLIC SECTOR - they need to operate within the laws of the land.... and they have NO RIGHT to impose their barbaric theocracy on their employees.....
Those forefathers - who are repeatedly falsely characterized by those who would like to rewrite history - insured a Freedom From Religion as well as a Freedom of Religion .....
It is just like the movie "Mars Attacks" - the aliens keep saying 'we come in peace' while they vaporize the humans.... this is the same .... they have one mantra .... 'it's about religious freedom' - while it is really about trying to take away the rights that the women before us fought to have -
TAKE THE VOTE on the BLUNT AMMENDMENT - WE WILL BE TAKING NOTES ..... ANYONE WHO VOTES TO TAKE AWAY OUR RIGHTS NEEDS TO BE VOTED OUT OF OFFICE ......
The WOMEN of this country will rise to the occasion - the futures of all our Mothers - Wives - Sisters and Daughters will not be subjected to the uneducated religious extremism of these zealots ..... WE WILL TAKE OUR COUNTRY BACK ..... FROM THE RELIGIOUS EXTREMISTS!!!!!!
