Rick Santorum getting ready to speak at an event in Livonia, Michigan on Monday.
The mild-mannered candidate in the sweater vest went MIA over the weekend. In his place, a feisty Rick Santorum (has that ever been used in the same sentence?) vividly took a swipe against President John F. Kennedy.
He told ABC News that JFK's famous 1960 speech on religious freedom made him want to puke.
"What kind of country do we live that says only people of non-faith can come into the public square and make their case? That makes me throw up and it should make every American," said Santorum. "Now we're going to turn around and say we’re going to impose our values from the government on people of faith, which of course is the next logical step when people of faith, at least according to John Kennedy, have no role in the public square."
Kennedy never actually said "people of faith are not allowed in the public square," though Santorum's interpretation suggests otherwise.
"The idea that the church can have no influence or no involvement in the operation of the state is absolutely antithetical to the objectives and vision of our country," said Republican contender. Santorum, who is a devout Catholic, said he doesn't believe separation of church and state is "absolute."

Funny thing, he makes me want to hurl.
wow.....For Santorum to spew about he said of President Kennedy....
and of what President Kennedy said in his speech that day......
makes me Puke ! Hey Santorum....you couldnt hold JFK's _____(fill in the blank) !!!
hey Rick...what you said about Pres.Kennedy...Makes Me Puke!
you couldnt hold JFK's _______— (fill in the blank) !!!
whats next....Praising Alabama Gov. Wallace for believing in " States Rights"
and NOT letting any Minority into that college ???? No wonder you LOST your Senate seat !
Santorum didn't have that much of a shot, but his attack on President Kennedy is his jump-the-shark moment. It's over, Rick. Even if you get the nomination(please, please, please), you're not going to lose big time.
Every single time I Google Santorum, it makes me want to throw up. Will this new eating disorder of mine be covered by health care if Obama loses?
I just used Google to look up Santorum again! Excuse me while I go throw up.
Rick Santorum versus the U.S. Constitution.
(U.S. Constitution, Article VI, Section III):
"The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States."
What is about "no religious test" that hard-core religious fundamentalist Republicans like Rick Santorum, and in one state after another as well as in the U.S. Congress, just don't get?
You know, listening to the bile from Santorums idiotic remarks and rebuke of President Kennedy's ideas on Church and State it reminded me of the time in the early 1960's.I miss the time when Sam Rayburn and Lyndon Johnson could debate and work out a compromise with Everett Dirkson and Strom Thurmond on specific differences on bills and policy, shake hands and go out for a drink. No name calling. Just effective political discourse. Today it's just my way or the highway and nothing is done and no one on the hill gives a damn!
It is understandable in the heat of a primary campaign one side would want to differentiate themselves from their opponent and the setting President to enhance his electability. This is Senator Santorum's master stroke. Shear political genius! As the great cultural warrior he smites a Kennedy and Thomas Jefferson, but more importantly he refutes the 'father' of religious liberty and of the notion of a wall of separation, America's first Baptist, Roger Williams (1603-1683). This makes the Senator imminently qualified to be be ... be the Governor of 1692 MA and preside over the Salem Witch trails. He has already shown his dislike of women being empowered and making decisions for them self as Roger Williams had offered to Anne Hutchinson. So Rick take us back to yester year, tell us how great theocracy was.
Rick Santorum is either a sanctimonious blowhard or a pandering prick. Protect your religious freedom by not voting for Santorum. Our forebearers came to America seeking refuge from religious persecution and the right to choose their religious belief. We don't need someone telling us how or what we will believe.
didn't you hear his wife's explanation that this campaign is 'God's will' and 'God had big plans for Rick' ..... these people are bat c**p crazy .... they are anti-intellectual religious zealots who are to ignorant to understand why this country has "Freedom FROM Religion" as one of it's foundations ...
they truly believe that they have all the answers and they would want to inflict their beliefs on the rest of us .... for our own good ....
and the anti-intellectualism of the populous which has gained an outrageous foothold in our country is right there with them ....
BTW - with an undergraduate degree - JD and MBA .... by his own definition - Cardinal Santorum is indeed a snob ....
yes - those of us living in PA know all of this - we need to educate the educable ..... and remove all religious zealots from office .....
Here is where Rick Santorum has it completely upside down:
The Catholic Church itself is the original creator of the concept of the separation of state and church (I know many people are not aware of this, but it is one of the great achievements of the catholic church. I am not at all a Catholic or even religious).
Source: Bertrand Russel, The History of Western Philosophy, Book Two, Part I, Chapter III Three Doctors of the Church, Page 335
"..., Saint Ambrose determined the ecclesiastical conception of the relation of church and state...." and "The independence of the Church in relation to the secular State, as successfully maintained by Saint Ambrose, was a new and revolutionary doctrine, which prevailed until the Reformation; when Hobbes combated it in the seventeenth century, it was against Saint Ambrose that he chiefly argued."
Bottom line, it is the very Catholic Church which Rick Santorum is arguing against, when he questions the absolute separation of Church and State.
Rick, maybe after all it is not a bad idea to get a college education and beeing able to be exposed to a broader education ;-)
JFK made Americans join together and feel good about their country. Saintly Santorum, Mittens and Newt make us disgustingly ill
That makes at least two of us who are in need of a loo or a bucket or to be prepared to replace the carpet because, as bad as I have seen in my 82 years, no presidential candidate has been as nasty or nauseating as Rick Santorum. The man has very serious mental/emotional problems. He should be professionally cautioned against any further public display.
If we only had a leader of John F. Kennedy's brilliance, wisdom, insight, experience and worldview for our generation we would be in much better shape as a nation. JFK was an inspirational leader who wanted a better future for every American, be they a Catholic, non-believer, Protestant, or black, white, rich, or poor, all that mattered is that they were American citizens. Santorum seems to think this kind of "liberal" thinking is bad for our country with his stated desire to revoke the Enlightenment and return us to the Dark Ages of religious bigotry and hatred of the "other." Disgusting is putting it mildly.
Rick Santorum is in to some kind of religion that is based on and feeds on fear. The 'One' whom he claims to believe did not ask Rick to pick up a sword or spew foolish and untruthful words to influence unstable or immature people of faith. And Santorum is not asked to force his beliefs down someone else's throat. I question Santorums motives & the condition of his own heart. He should get out of politics if he thinks he can establish his God's government on earth. I only hope that all these individuals who try to use the God I believe to be true, to fulfill some delusional fantasy of their own or to try and play God themselves be silenced. This is not true Christianity! How different are they from a pimp or drug dealer offering their feelgood promises that only lead to disappointing consequences and untrue results. It is not who the God I believe in is, or who His true followers are asked to be. To love and respect everyone as God does, even someone you may view as your enemy. Are they self-righteous religious individuals who put themselves above others, or this nation above others and don't truly know the God they claim to believe in let alone follow. To the church, 'Wake Up'! To so many others who have been disrespected, hurt, offended & felt threatened, I am so sorry for our behavior. You have good reason to reject this kind of philosophy and lifestyle. It claims to be some kind of godly formula to success but it omits loving & respecting all people or having an awareness that we are all in the same boat! They choose to dictate a lifestyle to others they can't achieve & they reject relationships built on understanding & grace when someone thinks different. GOP... I hope and pray your religion exposes you for who you are & takes you down! Fox News... you are who you are. Eventually you will dry up ... The wind will blow you away... and no one will remember you ever existed.
Santorum is an idiot.
Let's face it, Santorum can "GAG A MAGGOT"!!
No presidential candidate in recent history has done more to
undermine democratic principles, the constitution, and religious values.
His outrageous, arrogant, blatantly false, character assassinations and
pontifications are indicative of a desperate morally bankrupt little
mind who panders to the most base prejudices and fears.

Religion: A Cancer In Public Education
By Louis Thomas Jr.
Before
anyone becomes emotional or defensive about the title, let me explain what I am
discussing. This is not a criticism of
anyone’s belief in God or any power greater than ourselves. It is not an attack on Christianity or
Mormonism or any specific religion. Nor
is this a discussion as to whether there is or is not a God.
Let’s
be very clear, what I call religion are the practices of churches and their
attempts to control public education in violation of the First Amendment of the
United States Constitution. Their aim is
to control what children learn, what teachers teach and what the purposes of
public education should be - the total control of individual liberty.
What
some churches do today is far removed from the teachings of great moral
individuals like Abraham, Jesus, Mohammed, Gandhi, Switzer or King. Rather, they preach intolerance, scorn for
those who believe differently than they
do and rigid adherence to church power rather than to individual
conscience. They preach hatred for their
enemies, holiness of money and acceptance of racism. How often have you heard that Mormons are not
Christians, that Jews are infidels, that Muslims are out to kill everyone or
that the other religion is false and one’s God is better than the other person’s
God.
Now
let me discuss the central issue of this paper - religion as a cancer in pubic
education. Religion, like cancer,
attacks the various “organs” of public schools.
First
is the attack on personal health.
Religious extremists object to the teaching of sex education and any
mention of contraceptive and the use of
biological names of body parts.
Knowledge of these topics, they claim, will lead to a greater number of
young people to engage in sexual activity.
The opposite is true. Knowledge
prevents engagements in unhealthy sexual activities. It leads to a reduction of unwanted
pregnancies. The healthy habits of young
people improve greatly when they have knowledge of the dangers involved in
pre-marital sex. The abstinence only sex
education programs have been a miserable failure by any standard to measure
their effectiveness. The health of our
children is dependent on an understanding of how their bodies work - period.
Second
there is the attack on science.
Objections to the teaching of evolution, biology and anthropology are
numerous and wide spread. The critics
desire to submit creationism, intelligent design and original sin into the
curriculum of the schools. All of these
efforts are in contradiction to scientific knowledge and to the separation of
church and state - as required by the First Amendment of the United States
Constitution. Critics certainly have the
right to believe items based on faith; but there is no justification for
teaching faith-based beliefs in public education.
Third
there is the attacks on history.
Attempts to “prove” that this nation was founded on Christian principles
is a strong desire of public education critics.
They try to establish that our Founding Fathers were devoted Christians
or holy men who lived pure lives.
History, however, is clear. Most “Founders”
rarely attended church, owned slaves, and wrote very little about religious
topics. Jefferson denied the deity of
Jesus, Washington rarely attended church and often criticized it. Of the “Founders” only John Adams was a
practicing Christian who professed his strong religious beliefs. Most of these men who revolted against
England were Deists who insisted on the separation of church and state.
We
as a nation are blessed to have an Amendment in our Constitution that requires
the separation of government activities from personal actions. As individuals we can express our religious
beliefs at anytime in any place. But
schools, as a government service, cannot , and shall not, be involved in
religious actions or the promotion of religious beliefs. To do so is to feed the cancer that will
destroy public education. That is
something that a democratic nation cannot allow to occur. And we should all be diligent to prevent
misguided individuals from infecting our public schools with religious
causes.
