Stephen Colbert addressed the Mormon practice of posthumously baptizing Jewish survivors of the Holocaust. Our very own Lawrence O’Donnell made a cameo via his interview with Elie Wiesel, who has been calling on the Mormon Church to stop this ritual.
Just to "balance everything out," the Colbert Report host converted "all the dead Mormons to Judaism" on Thursday's show by performing a proxy circumcision. He has "Jay the Intern" hold up a hot dog as a symbol of the blessed event. After snipping off the top of the dog (I cringed) Colbert pronounced, "Mormon Tov! You're now dead Jews!"

I cringed too, but since I lack a penis, it was more about the touchy nature of the religious satire. But I still couldn't keep from laughing. Besides, all the Gentile men I have known, in the Biblical sense of the word, had been circumcised. My son was circumcised, mostly because I didn't want him to be made fun of in the boy's locker room. The Mormon practice of "sealing" always seems a bit out there to me, but that's their belief. I love Stephen and know him to be an equal opportunity roaster, who pokes fun even at his fellow Catholics.
Thank you for this.....
I laughed and laughed and then imagined Mitt's conversion and then I heard OOPS....... From the rabbi " well who said God dosen't have a sense of humor"...
It might be funny to some for jokes to be made by people about such sacred things. It's offensive. The joke is bigoted. Nobody should be laughing. We would not laugh if it was a joke about a dead @!$%# would we? This type of thing is on the same level. Jews and Mormons should be offended by such a joke. Mormons have a right to practice their religion. Get over it.
The point is they don't just practice their own religion, they defile the dead by posthumously baptizing others into the freaky cultish Mormon church.
Hell no. Mormons do NOT have a right to practice their religion when it involves attempting to corrupt the spirit of MY ancestors.
Fist of all it is not the Mormon Church. The name of the Church is The Church of Jesus Christ of Later-Day Saints. Mormon is just a nick name. We believe that all people dead and alive have the right to choose and know you is forced to be baptized. If you wount to know more about the truth of being Mormon then go to mormon.org
In case you didn't know it, Mitt Romney has no authority over the leaders of the church.
No, but he subscribes to their tenets.
if you think that Romney is not intimately involved with the Quroum of 12 then sir you are simply not aware of how LDS power structure works. Where do you think all the money for Bain came from?? Did Mitt pray for it to appear as golden tablets?? and then he got the best rate for the exchange.
When you give over $4 million dollars to any church in one tax year, YOU have serious influence or maybe it is just another investment of Mitts that is now paying off as he runs for the president. How do the Christians accept being baptized a Mormond and removed from Heaven??
As much as I disagree with Mitt Romney's political view. As a Member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Later-Day Saints I know for a fact Mitt Romney as no influence on the leaders of the Church

Lawrence, lawrence, lawrence...stop the Mormon bashing. Don't go down that line! All religions have their weirdness. It's okay to talk about stuff like the Mormon church pushing anti-gay legislations...or the Catholic Church's negligence toward molested children. But attacking a particluar churches religious practices is stupid.
Spoken like a non-Jew. Sure, it's fine that they piss on anyone else's religion, as long as they're leaving YOUR ancestors alone, amirite?
Mormons baptize all of their member's anscestors, which includes Catholics, Baptist, Jews, Buddhist, Muslim, Soka Gakkai, Hiindus...and on and on. Jews are a small fraction of the baptisms. So, I guess you can say that Mormons piss on all religions (not just Jews). But I say "it's their thing... leave religous practices alone!" ....lest your religeon be the next target!
(Sheesh...and this is why Lawrence needs to get away from bashing religious practices. He's spreading misinformation.)
I don't mean to be insensitive, but I don't understand why this is such a big deal. I agree that the Mormon practice is insulting, but it's about as offensive as an insult from a crazy person. It's not like their actions carry any weight. At least if you believe your own non-Mormon religion is the right one, you can't believe such rituals have any effect. If they did it to any of my dead relatives, I'd just shake my head in wonder. Go on, smack me with an invisible rubber chicken. See if I care.
I watched the original clip about baptizing Jews and felt bad we have some members who have submitted names of Jews contrary to our well-known agreement to not do so unless it is by direct family members who have more vested interest / legal authority in their family members than the Jewish religion. I also found Colbert's clip to be fairly humorous and inaccurate about some of our beliefs.
If you are Christian, you must have some opinion about what St. Peter meant when he referred to Christ preaching the gospel to them that are dead and in prison (1 Peter 3:18-21, 4:5-6) during the 3 days between His death and resurrection and why St. Paul, when teaching about the resurrection, spoke of baptism for the dead in 1 Corinthians 15:29.
We believe it is part of our Heavenly Father's merciful plan and shows His love for all His children that everyone who has ever lived on this earth will have the chance to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ preached to them in clarity and purity either in this life or in the next. Those that choose to accept the Gospel when it is preached to them after this life must still be baptized but need someone to be baptized on their behalf. So, we perform proxy baptisms where someone is baptized on behalf of a person that has died. That does not make them a member of our church or do anything for that person unless they accept Christ as the Saviour and choose to accept the baptism that has been performed on their behalf. But, we won't know that until after the 2nd Coming at some point.
If you believe your religion is essential for any type of salvation after this life but admit there are millions of God's children that have never even had a chance to be taught your religion, what does your church teach is going to happen to those poor unfortunate souls that never even had a chance to hear about your religion or accept it?
