Tonight, Washington state representative, Maureen Walsh, and her daughter, Shauna, joined The Last Word. Walsh, a Republican who represents the state's 16th district, voted yes to legalizing same-sex marriage. And tonight she explained her daughter's pivotal role in her decision.
On Monday, Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire signed that bill into law, making Washington the seventh state to legalize same-sex marriage.

I usually tune out republicans but I'll listen to Maureen Walsh from now on.. very moving.. remember on May 8 NC is tryng to pass amendment 1 to have marriage defined as only between a man and a women. Vote no..
As a Washingtonian and a Democrat, I was nevertheless really proud of Rep. Walsh. I'd go further: I'd call her a mensch! Thank you, Lawrence, for having her and her daughter on tonight. Very moving. And nice to see that common ground can be found occasionally between Republicans and Democrats.
It's shocking the way people of this country and generation just don't understand the concept of freedom of choice and equality. What does it matter what your personal feelings, religion, affiliations are? Why do people think their personal views should be instituted as law.
What happens to Republicans when they get to the federal level? They just turn into reactionary jerks, but at the state level there are some wonderful reasonable people, like Rep. Walsh. I loved her speech, it was moving but also humerous. Why can't there be more like her (at the national level)?
A wonderful example of leadership and mothering. Thank you for sharing this.
