President Obama delivered his third State of the Union address, laying out his agenda for the coming year: building the economy, bringing manufacturing back, and increasing infrastructure projects. He described an America "where hard work pays off and responsibility is rewarded."

who or what is the tea party are they not just the republicans they should have no response time. neither should any of those who have refused to attend our president,s stotu address, a time honored stress honored tradition how dare any american embarass our country in such a kindergarten fasion
Watching the Republicans sitting on their hands with their little grim faces as Obama proposes TRULY no-brainer solutions tells you exactly where Republican hearts lie. Their stoney faced lack of support for the country is telling - and they absolutely have to go in 2012 if this country is going to stand a chance at recovery and advancement. If you care about this country, you will not only supp...ort Obama for re-election, but you will give to the smaller campaigns of the Congressional candidates in other states who care more about America than their own pockets - and oust those Congressional members who are still looking for Obama's birth certificate and would ruin our country in favor of Citizen's United and Wall Street bonuses.
Totally agree lanilindsey!!! Democrats need to vote in historic numbers in November to give President Obama a Fillibuster proof Democratic House & Senate!!!
The problem cate from boston is most disenchanted democrats are confuse and disappointed and are sitting out the 2012 election. We hope something really really dramatic should happen to the economy for them to change their minds.
Yes, I'm a GOP voter and I'm envy of Obama, but his policy and idea are what matter, not his color of skin. Therefore, I hope GOP stop using racial slur or hate speech to divide Americans.
GOP, Mitt, Newt, etc. want their super rich friends pay zero tax on income from investment while ordinary American workers should pay 30-40 percent tax rate on real income. This is truly pathetic, don’t you think? Who is in the right mind would vote for such inequality of representation?
I think Pres. Obama knocked it out of the park. Not a one of those Republicans can talk or inspire like him. Mitch Daniels gave a boring, uninspiring mostly negative response. The Pres. had bold ideas and real substantive ideas. With the Repubs., there's nothing new here. Same trickle-down economics which even Pres. H.W. Bush at one time called "voodoo" economics. Same baloney about the debt which they make their most important goal, which the Pres. understands can be tackled at the same time as smarter investments in schools, research, infrastructure and manufacturing. When he talks as if the individual s have no choice of medical insurance under the Health Care Plan, he knows that's not true but the Republicans excel in lies.
Amazing Obama was able to steal the ideas from Rick Santorum, giving tax breaks to U.S. Manufacturers to bring back jobs from China; from Mitt Romney reducing regulations on businesses; from Newt Gingrich making government more efficient and accountable; from Ron Paul ending our wars abroad, bringing our troops home while he plans to grow government, rebuild America's infrastructure. How 'grandiose' of him...ha..ha.!
Obama did not mention ObamaCare, Keystone, high unemployment our 14 trillion dollar public debt, the continued Mexican invasion and border war. According to Obama the border is secure enough to pass 'comprehension' immigration and we need to make the invaders citizens so they can register as democrats and vote.
We have high employment with trillions of dollars of public debt but we still can pay for the 'Dream Act'…freaking amazing, but Obama is dreaming if he thinks he can beat Newt Gingrich in November.
The 'Peter Principle' comes to mind whenever I think of Obama's presidential job performance, do you?
p.s. Why doesn't Warren Buffett just pay his personal secretary a high enough salary to put her in a higher tax bracket?
EEEHHNK!(←"wrong answer" buzzer reference) You lose! Lame response, again! Unoriginal! Negative! Tired! Hater! Did I type unoriginal?
Find some new points to reply with......., PLEase!
Are you brain dead? Where is you live response to the "STATE OF THE UNION" speech? THERE IS NO BETTER MOMENT TO PRESENT A POLITICAL VIEW!!! Who is running this broadcast? billionare's who refuse to pay their "fair share" of federal income tax?
'fair share' is code for socialism, most billionaires are paying a higher amount than 15%. I'm sure you have taken some of that billionaire money by gaming the system in some small manner.
Anyways, Why doesn't Warren Buffett just pay his personal secretary a high enough salary to put her in a higher tax bracket?
The problem is we spent 6 trillion dollars in 4 yrs. and the unemployment rate is still above 8% where it should be around 6%. We spent 6 trillion dollars and gas prices are still $4-$5 a gallon. We spent 6 trillion dollars and we're still blaming the rich. You know 6 trillion dollars is equivalent to 6 Iraqi wars. What's going on?
If you're supporter of Newt Gingrich, let's keep in mind that his so-called tax policies, if implemented, would have Mitt Romney, who iirc currently pays about 14.6% in his taxes, would have him paying precisely 0% in taxes. And, naturally, it wouldn't be just this considerably rich fellow that this would apply to.
Now if you think it's cool that this guy who has more money to give to charity and the Mormon Church than most American families make in a year the exceedingly obese privilege of paying a 0% tax rate... then you are on the side of the 1% of whom 99% of all Americans disagree with.
And, let's be fair in that a recent poll finds that, while Newt Gingrich may prevail in overall electability by comparison with Mitt Romney, 60% of Americans still have a negative outlook of him, and rightly so. And so, with all due respect, if you think it a pipe dream that President Obama has any chance of beating the former Speaker, then it is you who is living in a fantasy world. Reality is a much crueler mistress for you and your GOP/self-proclaimed conservative pal, Newt Gingrich.
Mitt's money belongs to him, he is free to spend it anyway he damn wells pleases. But giving his money to charity and the Mormon Church is smarter than giving it to the wasteful socialist government of Obama.
48% of the labor force does not pay any progressive income tax, while 87% of the 52% pay around 15% or less. That 1% that you vilify pay most of the tax burden and even if the government took all of their income the government's commitment to entitlement programs would still not be paid.
FACE IT the government spends far too much money on wasteful programs and no amount of taxing the American People will solve our financial mess.
Just repeating 'Progressive Talking Points' will not change anything, didn't you listen to Obama tonight? We can only reclaim American values if we abandon the false doctrine of socialism and return to Republicanism.
Let's be perfectly clear here. I'm not saying that the 1% is evil and the 99% is good. It's not nearly so simple, and I disregard any attempt that would suggest otherwise.
I, and by far and large most of the American people, don't envy the rich nor wish to punish them for being successful. We simply want them to pay a tax rate that's on par with the rest of America and doesn't have it so that they gain unfair advantages simply for having more money than the rest of us.
This is why extraordinarily wealthy people like Warren Buffett and why groups of millionaires have marched on Washington to demand that their taxes go up. And, just for reference, you don't have to believe me. Google it and see it for yourself.
Moving on... yes, of course, the government spends and wastes too much money right now. However, as much as you might want to contest this, the irrefutable fact remains that our government has not yet enacted sweeping tax reform so that we could even see what kind of an effect it would have not only on our national debt, but on the lives of Americans in general.
That you would condemn something that hasn't even come to pass is not only pitiable, but that you haven't the pride of, never mind a Democratic or Republican, but an American in general. Negative outlooks like that will only serve the undermine our society even further, and we've had quite enough of that.
Hey Dug,
When you mention that 48% of people don't pay taxes, you forgot to mention that those people don't pay FEDERAL taxes because they make less than $8,600 a year (minimum amount required to qualify to pay federal taxes). You also forgot to point out that those same people still pay state, city, sales taxes.
@Chris-shka - "When you mention that 48% of people don't pay taxes", you are a perfect example of the futility of trying to debate any seditious progressive democrat. I never said that, I said "48% of the labor force does not pay any progressive income tax, while 87% of the 52% pay around 15% or less."...so you point is moot because you can't even comprehend what I said.
But that still doesn't address the fact that these people aren't making enough money to make any sort of reasonable contribution to the tax pool. I am not speaking "Democratic talking points" I am speaking of the reality that I live every day. I work my ass off at two jobs and I've only made a little over $6,000 for an entire year. Why is it that people like me who are living in near abject poverty should be expected to pay taxes that they can't afford, while people making millions in one year, people who have 3, 4, 5, homes in several different states, some in different countries are somehow overburdened in taxes? Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike/hate the rich, I just hate that the system works to benefit them while most suffer and struggle just to meet their basic needs.
The reason you are only making around $7.25 per hour is because you don't have enough education and training to earn more money. But you should still pay your 'fair share' of the tax burden or 15% which is around $1044 which is only $87 a month or $21.75 a week!
Why not? Do you expect 'Free Health Care', Police and Fire services, and a Free Education?
The 1% paying their income taxes does not mean they should be paying for your 'fair share' or does it?
Look, Labor is a commodity that is influenced by supply and demand forces. More supply means less demand thus lower overall wages, higher demand less supply means overall higher wages. The problem is government undercutting the U.S. Labor market with cheap illegal alien workers and giving out VISAs to high tech workers to keep salaries down. The answer is so easy, just secure the border with the National Guard to prevent illegals taking low end jobs and put an moratorium immigration overall....let American companies, colleges and universities compete for Americans to fill their ranks then stand by and watch salaries rise, or course this would take some time but it would be better late than never to implement such policies.
The wrong way is too expect Unions to force Employers to pay their employees more money, all that does is drive Companies out of state or the country all together. Public sector Unions are the worst, they are forcing taxpayers to pay government workers outlandish salaries and benefits. Robing Peter to pay Paul, this never works and eventually such systems fail.
But remember this a poor man never gave you a job, only rich men can do that or the government. But government jobs are counterproductive to the economy and Keynesian economics has never worked...NEVER!
"But remember this a poor man never gave you a job, only rich men can do that or the government. But government jobs are counterproductive to the economy."
Quite obviously you haven't even the slightest idea what you're talking about. Go and take walk around a suburban neighborhood sometime and check out all the local businesses - that bike shop that just opened up, that fruit stand just down the road, a new beauty shop, and let's not forget that nice little family electronics store that's been around since forever.
If you haven't realized it by now, this is what my neighborhood is like - a somewhat picturesque view of the America I know where modest, middle-class people can make a living by their own strength as long as they keep working hard. And so, by my own personal experience, one which I'm sure I'm not alone in here, I'm calling you out on your painfully narrow-minded claim that only rich people or the government can give you a job.
Come back to reality and realize that's not how things work. That's never how things have worked nor will it ever be how they work. Get over it.
And as for government jobs, how exactly are they counterproductive to the economy? An explanation, if you would please?
Not enough education? I went to a very good private high school, went to a great university, finished a major in Russian language and literature. And still there is nothing in this country for someone like me. And I do pay my fair share in taxes. I pay state taxes, I pay city taxes. I make 7.75 an hour, make about 6000 a year, pay 3300 a year for a place to live, approximately 600 for utilities, another 280 for water. I'm drowning in student loan debt, which will be about another 240 for the next 6 months, and then they want to jack it up to about 300 a month. So am I just supposed to hand the rest of my money over, foregoing food, hygiene products and the like? But I'm done arguing. I was told since I was young that if I just get a good education then everything will be fine and I won't have to struggle. That is a lie, especially if you have the unfortunate circumstance of being born poor. No matter how you try in this country, unless you already have money, your basically f**ked.
It's funny that only 1% of the population is super rich and we're all crying foul and unfair. Imagine if 50%-60% of the population is as filthy rich as Warren Buffet, I bet you Obama would still be talking about class warfare and income inequality. Where is it gonna end? The opportunities are all around you. You just have to be SMART, GOOD LOOKING, HAVE LOTS OF PERSONALITY and you'll achieve the American dream.
MSNBC's "live video" is nothing but a black window. Are you brain dead? Where is your live response to the "STATE OF THE UNION" speech? THERE IS NO BETTER MOMENT TO PRESENT A POLITICAL FEEBACK!! Who is running this broadcast? ARE YOU ALL OUT AT THE BAR CELEBRATING? The fight is NOT over!!
What moron is running this web cast? The "Watch live: Obama's SOTU address" is a dead feed. You are wasting precious time in promoting the Presidents speech!!!~!
It's diagnostic of the utter intellectual bankruptcy of the Republican Party that Mitch McConnell could suggest this man should be a one-term president and have everyone in his party in the Senate follow his lead...
Why can't the White House use language as well as the opponents?
After the speech last night why can't they force home these headlines and bullets and repeat them:
"A Fair Deal for All"
"Just say no to Radical Republicans"
"No more Welfare for the Rich"
And when the President blames "Congress" he is blaming Dems as well. Why not blame"Radical Republicans in Congress" and make the point that we will have more gridlock unless folks vote for Democrats and stop the "Radical Republican Congress from doing more harm."
Language, phrases, headlines. Like the language of those Radical Republicans in Congress who want to "destroy the Constitution" and with it the "framework of democracy." See how easy it is?
Words and phrases matter. Why can't Dems use them effectively again?
Shouldn't someone...anyone in the lame stream media ask Obama why he missed his court date in Georgia?
