As Willard M. Romney's campaign plows ahead toward the Republican nomination for president, little-known details on his personal background are popping up.
On the campaign trail, for instance, he'll gladly chat about his huge family. But what about his Mexican cousins? It's a branch he ignores in public.
NBC News correspondent Mike Taibbi filed a fascinating report on Rock Center with Brian Williams, profiling Romney's relatives who are Mexican citizens. In 1885, Romney's Mormon great-grandfather, Miles Park Romney, fled from the United States to Mexico in order to escape prosecution for practicing polygamy. His own father was born there and went on to become the governor of Michigan — the quintessential poster boy for the Dream Act. About 40 cousins still live south of the border, and directly oppose cousin Willard on his own anti-Dream Act stance.
Earlier today, Romney's campaign released a new TV ad, en español, reaching out to Spanish-speaking voters in Florida.

oh, so he's not a half human, half alien clone.
Que pasa Willie?
Another one bites the desert dust
Bueno
I always find genealogy interesting and I think this is particularly interesting. I don't know what good his Mexican family's viewpoints are are in the discourse here, however, because it is clear that Mitt doesn't really have a real relationship with them. Clearly, they are of different minds, but I was raised knowing my cousins and I disagree with them on almost everything. I am not entirely sure how relevent the information is, but it was definitely interesting and I enjoyed watching it.
Mitt Romney was an anchor baby? Clearly, there's a story here. Someone should do some digging, Lawrence.
Wait a minute. George was born in Mexico? Shouldn't that have disqualified him from running for President?
Just Wikipedia'd (is that a word?) George Romney. Apparently, a child born to American parents is an American citizen, no matter where he/she's born. And I thought the governor could be an anchor baby. Oh, well.
All candidates should show their birth certificate and I mean everyone.
He's running for President for Pete's sake! He can't have illegals.
I don't believe this.... you must be joking. It never ceases to amaze me the idiocy of the american press.
Please tell Mike Taibbi that George Romney was the head of American Motors, not Chrysler.
I tried to make the the same point as I am from Michigan. George Romney was the President of American Motors not Chrysler. Although, Chrysler "bailed" our American Motors after George went into politics. Like father, like son. George lost the nomination by being "brainwashed' in Vietnam which was true but taken out of context. Mitt will lose because he stated he "liked firing people" which may also have been taken out of context but will be used out of context. I also attended grade school for two years with Mitt and he never had to worry about a pink slip. Especially after receiving two degrees from Harvard and coming from a wealthy family.
Mitt where is your birth certificate? Why is it that you do not want anyone to know your true name and that you are half mexican?
Lawerence you did it again. I said it before and I say it again, you are a man after my own heart. I love you Lawrence. U go man!
Message for Mitt
I am the second Romney Birther. You should not be allowed to run for the highest office in the land, Mormon undergarments or not, until you prove you are a living breathing, 4th of July American.
And no Mitt, we are not going to a "quite room" to discuss your birth certificate issue or you legitimacy. So produce your birth certificate and no, this issue is not going away it will only follow you to the end.
Mitt just wanted to keep the secret so he could keep his wealthy friends who are white. Sometimes people will lose your invitation if you learn you have minority relatives as you aren't pure white. Mitt's family can even vote as their duel citizens. But Senator McCain who allowed us to know he had black relatives just for minority votes and Mitt will do the same.
What's interesting is how Rick Santorum told his sad story of his grandfather but left alot out. Rick's cousin Maria Santorum did an interview as she spoke of how Rick often visited the family in the 80's and spoke of the Santorum family history. Rick's grandfather Pietro “He was anti-fascist to the extreme, and the political climate in 1925 was stifling so he left for America. After a few years he returned to Italy with his wife and children, including Aldo, Rick’s father, who passed away late last year. It’s a shame he won’t have the joy to see his son’s success in his bid for the White House.” She goes on to explain how the family then became pillars of the Communist Party in Italy. Rick left that out of his story about his grandfather Pietro..
This is what will sink Romney!!
This is what will sink Romney!!!
Romney's Family have brought employment to Mexico, Obama's Family are illeagal residents on welfare...where is that comparison? What a shame, Obama had Jeremiah Wright who hated America, Mitt has a whole religion that loves America. But Obama got a pass. Too bad msnbc couldn't get anyone to talk bad about the Romney's. America was founded by people who wanted religious freedom, msnbc wants to make sure that hate for Romney's religion stays a topic of discussion.
A whole religion that loved America? Right... Brigham Young brought the saints here when it was Mexican Territory--only half of them, BTW; the rest remained behind following fanatics such as James Strang and Sidney Rigdon and ultimately choosing to remain loyal to the son of martyred LDS founder Joseph Smith, forming the RLDS faith. A year after their arrival it became United States territory--slave territory, incidentally--and Brigham Young was named Territorial Governor because there were only Mormons and a few Native American tribes whose land claims obviously didn't matter.
Once he had his hand on political power, Young had considerable difficulty relinquishing it (Senator Hatch has the same malady; he promised us only two terms in office). And his rhetoric was decidedly inflammatory. He claimed Zachary Taylor and James K. Polk "were in hell" and others would follow if they challenged his vision of the Almighty's plan. This ultimately led President Buchanan to send federal troops to the territory to ensure the Mormons would submit to the rule of law (particularly the "one man-one wife" rule). Young was offered a presidential pardon which he accepted, otherwise he faced charges of treason and may well have been hanged.
I invite serious students of history to read Young's words on the subject of Abraham Lincoln as well... This volume by a couple of friends of mine is an excellent beginning:

Weren't you same people telling the GOP to stop asking Obama for his birth certificate?
