UNICEF has been flooded with all the online contributions that poured in over the Christmas weekend for K.I.N.D., Kids In Need of Desks. The total we have raised this holiday season is now $1,469,639. And the total we've raised since beginning the program last year is $3,883,638 — a jump of more than $350,000 in the past 24 hours!
If you count the grand total, that's enough to build and deliver nearly $81,000 desks to classrooms in Malawi where most students and teachers have never seen a desk. We're thrilled and very gracious for your continued support.
We’re so close to the $4 million mark. Can any one of you out there in Last Word blogland help us get there? For $48, you can lift two children off the floor and you can outfit a full classroom with a $720 donation. No dollar amount is too large or small. Visit our website lastworddesks.msnbc.com or call 1-800-FOR-KIDS to make a donation.

Lawrence - I'm a huge fan of yours. So it is with pain that I tell you that while this constant appeal for money to help children in Malawi is admirable, it is disappointing. You pull my heartstring with the photos and stories from Malawi; I have to jerk myself back to reality to keep from hitting the "donate" button. I assume you know how great the need is in this country. Hey, I live in Rick Perry's state where children are being shortchanged in both education and health care. I grow weary of those who worry about kids in other countries while neglecting children in our own country. Please, Lawrence, think about who you and your viewers could help in this country next year. Let's start our giving at home. Once we solve our problems, then I'll join you in solving all the other nations' problems.
Lawrence,
I was thrilled to donate to this cause in lieu of Christmas gifts in friends names. There was just a small problem. The e-mails that were sent to the reciepients were very unclear.
People thought they were being asked to raise funds. I made a donation to my cousin after her mom died just days after we lost my beloved cousin ( her husbands brother)...I have not heard from her. I hope she does not think that I asked her to raise funds right after her loss.
Thanks,
Annie Brickner
