File this one under "the kids are all right." Congresswoman Michele Bachmann met with potential voters and some soon-to-be voters at a Pizza Ranch restaurant in Waverly, Iowa, yesterday. Rep. Bachmann faced some pretty pointed questions from some young students about marriage equality and other gay rights issues.
Her answer on marriage equality clearly puzzles the kids. Bachmann tells them gay people do have the same rights to marry as straight people. They can also marry someone of the opposite sex, too. The looks on the kids' faces say it all.

She needs a counter for "when I was growing up here in Iowa" comments...
She doesn't get it when she addressed the young lady's question. What Bachman did was demonstrate perfectly how homosexual people are treated as second class individuals. I didn't choose to be a lesbian, who would choose to be discriminated against, it's how I was born.
I am NOT attracted to a male in the slightest way...so I should suppress my own happiness, get married to the opposite sex so that I can be treated equally as her? My name isn't Marcus, it's Jenn. I have the same happy and giving relationship as any heterosexual couple who gets to tote the piece of paper around. My commitment to my partner is just as strong, if not stronger than some heterosexual couples.
Maybe her rights as a female should be revoked so she could see how we, the other 'side' live on a daily basis.
well said.
I find the people that are clapping to be very disturbing.
This has got to be the most bigoted discussion I have ever heard.
i found the clapping to be very disturbing also.
She's wrong again! Eisenhower created the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. All Carter did was split it up!
And lying again! Prayer in Public Schools ended in 1962. Since she is only a year older than I, I can safely say she would have been in the first grade in 1962.
The kids ARE all right. The morning after this video was taken the kids were at school early to pass out homemade cookies to students who wore red for World AIDS Day. When I see how committed they are to spreading a message of tolerance and acceptance, the future looks pretty bright.
I don't have anything productive to say. Bachmann is retarded.
Those kids deserve medals for suffering Baths*t's bullsh*t.
Batsh*t hits it out of the ballpark again ... this dunderhead just does not get that the Fed doesn't dictate local school curriculum and standards ... states do. Dog FORBID the Federal government supplement local education budgets ... the HORRORS!! Well, it doesn't surprise me coming from someone who claims a 7-foot doctor told her that the ACA requires the IRS to approve medical treatments, that the HPV vaccination causes mental retardation, and that the "shot heard around the world" was in ... New Hampshire.
Nor does the dunderhead get, with her stupid pronouncement that "we're ALL American's first and foremost," that the LBGT community is NOT on equal footing in this country in terms of rights afforded them. Why, bullying kids for a "choice" is just fine in her cold, hard Christian heart ...
And the bohunks clapping? Well, look who their supporting ... speaks volumes as to their utter lack of character and their lack of grey matter ... 'nuff said.
The whole bunch of these so called republicans canidates are the bottom of the pond and the people that think they are worth voting for are as crazy as they are... Thats all we need is Nute for president... We have a great president now. We don't need a republican messing things up again....
Bachmann is a joke and nothing but. So anti socialism she takes money from the farm bill, the classic example of socialism.
Bachmann is a fraud, her campaign is a fraud, but she fits in the GOP these days cause that entire party is also nothing but a fraud.
these students were impressive. bachmann danced around their questions & when she gave them a nonsensical talking point they brought it right back. The laws are different for the LGBT community and thepeople who choose to marry someone of the opposite sex. It's discrimination pure and simple. bachmann completely avoided the issue of bullying.I don't understand the Conservatives obsession with prayer in school. And why are they so intent on dismantling The board of Ed.? They sure supported No Child Left Behind.
I am often astonished by no adults calling Bachmann or any of the candidates out for making factual claims that just do not make any sense given even a slightest awareness of history during their own life times. She makes things up that are obviously false yet gets applause. Facts do not seem to matter to any of them, only power.
Why, if not for power over other people, would anyone want to run for office when they hate government and think it has no ability to accomplish anything? Forming the Department of Education was a solution to a set of problems she is ignoring. Context and detail of events at the time and the reasons federal laws and programs were developed, and adopted by both parties, are being ignored by all of these candidates. They seem oblivious to the dangers of returning to times before enactments of laws they all rail against in civil rights, economic laws of regulation, limits on corporations, criminal justice, labor standards, health and environmental standards etc. They do not remember or care about the horrid air quality in many cities, or water purity in many communities, or the harm of segregation, lack product safety standards that cost untold loss of life and impairment. They promise to do away with the FDA but ignore why drug evaluation and proof of safety and effectiveness were needed and what evils were present that cause those laws to be created.
Life itself, or quality of life, they believe, was so much better in some mythical time in the past. They do not say what decade because the reality of those times would become more clearly at odds with their assumptions.
I am baffled by the number of erroneous comments the candidates are making and the media simply glosses over them. I don't know who is the least informative - Bachmann or Perry. They're living examples of "It's not what you know, it's who you know."
I am baffled by the number of erroneous statements made by the candidates. They actually have such limited understanding of government or how things work outside that little world in which they exist. How did they get where they are today? Bachmann and Perry are perfect examples of "It's not what you know, it's who you know." because those two know NOTHING!
There is no fedral 'law of the land' that requires heterosexual marriage. She is repeatedly referring to the Constitution of the United States; it is about time that she actually reads it.
