"Awkward"? I thought it was absolutely perfect! What kind of an idiot would think it anything but great? The entire concert was excellent. I wish bitter old prudes like O'Donnell would stick to what they know. Trashing Gaga and Bill while they were celebrating 10 yrs of Bill's good works was truly low. I would have fired his ass if I were his boss. Maybe he's just bitter about the fact that it would take 100 of his lifetimes to accomplish what Bill has already done in HIS life. So for all of the people who love Bill, a fighter for the poor worldwide. . and for Gaga who is a very strong and important advocate for gays, lesbians and many others, @!$%#. OFF. You were a complete jerk attacking Bill Clinton and Gaga. I hope they fire your bitter old ugly ass. . .jerk.
I will not be as harsh as the previous critic but will echo his/her sentiment in a different light. I am a huge fan of Lawrence O'Donnell's and watch every night. I am also a donor of the KIND fund and the UNICEF efforts in Somalia because O'Donnell and his political pundit celebrity status has persuaded me to support causes he is passionate about. The segment about the Clinton Foundation tenth anniversary fundraiser was poor, unbalanced, and sank The Last Word to the level of Access Hollywood or Entertainment Tonight. I watched the entire concert online as Yahoo! turned the event into a global event by proving free online broadcasting. Yes, Clinton's birthday was celebrated but so was the foundation's anniversary and the night was all about the foundation. Someone who missed the concert and just watched your coverage, might be misled to think that President Clinton threw himself a self-indulgent birthday party with his Hollywood friends missing the point of the event and the exquisite sample of global artists who performed that night. Jonathan Alter seemed uncomfortable with the segment and fortunately tried to get some of these points across. Lady Gaga was Lady Gaga and she is political activist in her own right. Secretary of State Clinton and Chelsea Clinton were better sports about Lady Gaga than O'Donnell was-they seemed to be having a good time and getting a kick of how Lady Gaga made the President blush several times. Mr. O'Donnell you are great, I will keep watching, I will keep donating to your causes but you blew it tonight and you were disrespectful of President Clinton's amazing post-presidency and vision for a better world.
Lawrence, you really missed the mark on this one. The Decade of Difference concert was meant to celebrate the great work of the Clinton Foundation and bring more attention to the global initiative and it's impact in the world. Your comments sounded like something I would hear from Rush Limbaugh and FOX news.
Dumb. And GROSS.
It was not GAGA efforts that destroyed DADT but the efforts of hardworking gay service people who proved they were fine soldiers. I think Gaga is too busy participating in this theological cult http://youtu.be/wagn8Wrmzuc to do much else.
That the Clintons invited Gaga to the party does say something about them but not much about their "good works". Those of us who remember the horrible days of the Ken Starr basically shutting down the US government because of Clinton's fly have a right to cringe.
carina,
so you think President Clinton should live his life so the rest of us don't cringe? the horrible days of ken starr were not based on Clinton's fly.
that was a result of the republican party doing what they do best, tring to bring a democratic president down, and that isn't saying much. the charge, led by newt gingrich, was also having an affair outside of his marriage. other republicans who also went after Clinton for lying about a blow job, were also lying to their wives and to the american people about their own rendezvous, their own homosexual activities (larry "i am not gay, i have never been gay"," wide stance" craig). not that their is anything wrong with being gay.
i think Lady Ga-Ga is a talented performer. she spoke out against DADT and supported the gays and lesbians fighting for civil rights, as have many others. i am sure that gays and lesbians appreciated her support, as they did the many others who spoke out loudly in their defense. Rachel Maddow made it a frequent issue on her show. i believe Rachel helped immensly in moving this forward. everyone who wanted to move civil rights forward for gays and lesbians played a role, small or large. it all helped, some did more than others.
Maybe the clintons just like Ga-Ga. millions of people do.
one more thing, since you mentioned the partisan ken starr, and further proof that this was not about Clinton's fly.
it would be nice if All men, republicans, too, could keep their fly's shut, but since they cannot it is the utmost of hypocrisy to try to bring a president down for lying about a blow job, especially when they were doing the same things themselves. this was a partisan witch-hunt, and the republicans were highly confident that their efforts were going to result in President Clinton's removal from office. even today, i CRINGE at how the republican party wanted every blow-by-blow, bringing out the most personal aspects of a sexual affair that should have been kept private, between the two CONSENTING adults involved. the republican party, by bringing out everything they could get their greedy, dirty little fingers on must have felt that they were above reproach. because they hated Clinton so much, they didn't see that it was about to backfire.
they were STUPID, DENSE, IGNORANT, and filled with hatred for President Clinton.
were it not for Larry Flynt who brought out the fact that Bob Livingston was having an affair, livingston would have become speaker of the house, and the impeachment process would have moved from the house to the senate, where it would have moved forward with a vengence. you remember, of course, that livingston resigned. the hypocrisy of the President Clinton's enemies was made clear and present to the american people.
Flynt had much more information about the republicans and their hypocritical impeachment of President Clinton, but revealing the truth about Livingston was enough, he wouldn't release anything else.
unlike the republicans who wanted to disclose every blow-by-blow of a personal affair, and impeach our president for lying about a blow job.
the republican party has not changed.
LOVE LOVE LOVE LADY GA-GA!
I guess we can put an end to the stupid allegations that Republicans are racist and that is why they are anti-Obama, You've laid out great proof, Suzette. (ooh- watch for the backstroke...)
rusty,
why do you and other conservatives on this site keep bringing up racism? the religious right is not perfect, and i am sure some of them are racist.
not only racist, some of them, but they are judgemental and bigoted against the democratic party, as they have proved with Clinton, and now with President Obama.
i wasn't trying to put an end to the racism issue in regard to republican conservatives. i was trying to point out that President Clinton has a right to enjoy a lady Ga-Ga performance without everyone going all 'monica lewinsky' on him, and bringing up ken star and that whole impeachment scandal.
you know, the one where the empty-headed, moronic, mindless, sophmoric republican party wanted every blow-by-blow of bill clinton's sex life.
that one.
shame on them.
why don't you find chris matthews on you tube interviewing Larry "wide stance", 'minneapolis airport bathroom', "i am not gay, i have never been gay" Craig when the impeachment process was going on.
that should tell you alot about the hypocrisy of the republican party.
Suzette- funny lines when reading your post.
First revising history to make it appear that conservatives being accused of being racists when they oppose Obama is only a figment of conservative's imaginations. Then following that concept up with a point that you were not attemping to stop the racism issue.
Seemingly- you are saying that it doesn't exist then admit you're not trying to stop it. I guess, stop what? if it doesn't exist?
And, on Craig- seems like you have a blow-by-blow description of his stance- all the while protesting against those with the same accusations against Clinton. Would that descriptor you put on Rs really be self applied to yourself?
Add me to "missed the mark." What were you thinking? To my mind, there was an attempt to make a story where none existed. I am of sufficient age to have lived through the impeachment saga, but made zero connection between that period and GaGa's performance. The most telling thing in that block was Mr. Alter's closing comments - maybe the media should focus more on the work of the Foundation, and less on creating "the story" when there's an entertaining video to be shown. It diminished what was otherwise an informed and enlightening program.
Did copyright problems keep the audio of this clip from the Last Word video clip? The "Last Word theme" that was overdubbed made for a good ringtone though. :) Download at
O'Donnell misses the point and the mark. In this singular case, I would say, with friends like you...
I watch your show every night. Often you get way too self-rightous about events. But last night was a real low point. You started off the piece with "The attention seeking Bill Clinton". Completely negating all the good things the Clinton foundation does around the world. I see a thoughtful statesman who is using his expertise and power to help others. Show a little respect and get off your high horse.
To me, just the idea of watching Lady Gaga sing to Bill Clinton at that function in a "Marylin" type performance is totally inappropriate on its face and one would have to be a complete idiot and politically tone deaf not to see that point, given the incident with Monica Lewinsky. Sure, she has the right and the performance may have been great, but..., c'mon people! Get your minds together!
system's down,
why do you all care? his wife, who was sitting next to him, and his daughter love and accept him, even with his character defects.
i am sure you don't have any.
Lady gaga is one nasty looking whore........
yeah, maybe.
but you probably really like looking at her.
Sorry, but I got me a hot looking red... With legs all the way up to her azz..
I think Lawrence was suffering from 'PTCD' -- 'Post Traumatic Clinton Disorder,' after all those years of dealing with Clinton and ... 'That Woman!'
Larry believes in large government, large tax rates, and food stamps for everyone.
Just look at what is going on in Greece, if the liberals get their way that will be the U.S.A in 5 years.
