Children's Television Workshop/Sesame Street
The Muppets of Sesame Street will take on poverty and hunger with their newest friend, Lily.
In a clear sign of the times we live in, the upcoming season of the perennial PBS children's program Sesame Street will include an impoverished Muppet named Lily. Sesame Street has put out the video included below on YouTube introducing the very purple puppet. In the clip Lily talks about how she and her family aren't always sure where their next meal will come from. She also explains how she receives breakfast and lunch each school day through a free lunch program.
The brilliant team at the Sesame Workshop is using Lily to explain a very complex and heartbreaking problem to young children while showing ways they can help like volunteering for food pantries and donating food to those who may be less fortunate. Here's more from Entertainment Weekly:
... Lily will be revealed in a one-hour Sesame Street primetime special, Growing Hope Against Hunger, which is being sponsored by Walmart. The special will star country singer Brad Paisley and his wife Kimberly Williams Paisley, as well as the Sesame Street Muppets.
“Food insecurity is a growing and difficult issue for adults to discuss, much less children,” said the Paisleys in a statement. “We are honored that Sesame Street, with its long history of tackling difficult issues with sensitivity, caring and warmth asked us to be a part of this important project.”
The special will share the stories of real-life families to raise awareness of hunger issues in the United States, as well as strategies that have helped these families find food. The United States Department of Agriculture estimates that 17 million American children — nearly 1 in 4 — have limited or uncertain access to affordable and nutritious food. Walmart is sponsoring the show as part of a $1.5 million grant toward the initiative and holding screenings in select communities.
The special is set to air nationwide on Oct. 9.

Hi-5 to Sesame Street, always being current.
Sadly republican heads will explode regarding this indoctrination that they will do there best to wipe out any and all funding for PBS.
There next puppet should be something of the following:
A christian, whom hates the other puppets based on race, creed, gender, sexual orientation, and economic status and makes this hatred known, but attends church faithfully every week.
This same puppet comes from "old money". His education, and not meaning the actual process of proving what was learned, just the diploma was bought and paid for by daddy.
Tries to find ways to bill the government twice as much for contract services that are already provided by the government. And done so successfully.
Wines about the others suffering from their own choices, without realizing his family is the cause of such suffering.
Thinks the earth is flat AND the center of the Universe.
Man and dinosaurs co-existed less then 4,000 years ago, then the Egyptians came along and defeated the dinosaurs, and the Romans and Greeks fought the Egyptians. Then came the Israelites and everything got really messed up.
Insists on believing that Government decisions must be made based on all the facts presented in the bible.
If you use a condom (or any other prophylactic) for sex, you should be charged with attempted murder. If a victim of rape - the state must insist you carry that unwanted child to full term and give birth (at your own expense) and the mother must raise that child with no assistance from the state
All women must be removed from the work force and remain at home, barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen
Again - the list can go on and on regarding republican thinking, and the creation of a new puppet.
This is fantastic. I am glad they are doing this. I don't agree with the above poster. There doesn't need to be sex on Sesame Street. Kids are not going to understand "gay" or "straight", and they don't need to be taught about it at 3 years old. Kids also don't need to be introduced to hate in any form. You can teach tolerance of people who are different without going into the whole religious thing. I am sure give it time and Republicans will cut funding to PBS.
There is more to this conversation than meets the eye...
