The president is hoping that popular demand will sway the Republicans, at least to some extent. There are some signs it already has. Republicans are at least (and at last) talking about the need to compromise and make some kind of deal. Lawrence is underestimating -- indeed, totally overlooking -- the electorate, the public, the citizen, the voter, which is a huge part of this deal. You should clue him in on the American people. Hopefully, Lawrence will eventually catch up with what is happening. Whether the Republicans actually make a deal is still uncertain, but the fact that they have changed their tone (and tune) and are at least willing to say they are willing to compromise with this president should have been noted at some point in Lawrence's analysis.

I don't get what you are saying, Lawrence. What is your point? Obama is screwed no matter what he does? He shouldn't have even tried because he will be inevitably defeated? That he was an idiot to propose something that the won't happen because of the cockamamie , obstructive and self-serving Republicans want to take us back to the wild west of the 1850s, no law, no doc, just settle by shooting each other? President Obama was very affective at the beginning of his presidency. He passed health care reform, he got a huge stimulus package. With a super majority he was able to say " they can come along for the ride but they will have to sit in the back seat", referring to the repubs. Then we had the little change in the house. Then his tune became "we need to compromise." Funny because his stand on this jobs bill is " this is a package. take it as it is. " ( no compromise). It's not just the Repubs that don't believe the President knows what he is doing neither do most of the people. I just read here on MSNBC this morning that REP. Weiner's seat went to a Republican, not only are the people speaking they are yelling. Never has Queens nor the Bronks elected a repub until today. This whole thing with Solyndra pretty much sums up President Obama's abilities.

I believe in his logic skills and reasoning skills.

I just had a conversation with a liberal and the crux is that he was explaining to me that the $500M given away to Solyndra was stimulus. that money went to people, and they spent it. He explained the multiplier effect and how much that $500M has really meant to the economy. He then blamed it on Bush and the Chinese. One of my favorite quotes is from Jeff Foxworthy- "You can't fix stupid".

The problem is you have a group that is not interested in helping the country move forward, they are only interested in defeating the President. They know is policies will work, but block them at every turn because his success means their failure towards regaining power. To a Republican, there is nothing to be gained by helping middle to low income Americans because they have nothing to offer them in return. No seats on boards, no jobs after their political careers, and no large sums of money to donate to their campaigns.

If the Republicans rewrite the President's job bill they are only going to pass the parts they want.    They will only give the tax cuts they want.   They will spend nothing on creating jobs, and there will be no tax increases for the rich.

This shouldn't be all or nothing on either side.   But, if the Republicans are left to have their way this will not be a job creation bill.  But a destroy the economy bill that will insure that Obama will not get re-elected.   It will also make Obama look weak, which he is not.  Obama has a spine of titanium, but he hides it well.    The Republicans do not respect logic and reason.   The Republicans only respect a President that sounds like a bull moose in heat.    Obama's nerve is stronger and more steely than most Presidents we have had.    But, most Democrats and no Republicans see that.    

Obama runs his Presidency like a community organizer,  not a loonie governor, and goes out and talks with people and discovers what the best thing to do is, and he goes out and does it.   Most other politicians don't understand this.   Most of our recent Presidents have been governors.   Probably the only reason Obama won is because he ran against another Senator and not a governor.    Governors and Senators deal with people and problems differently.   Obama is like no other President we have ever had.   His experience is with organizing the community and that is how he solves problems.

He realizes that if you ask people on Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare what needs to be changed to make the programs run better and cheaper, they will no and he will be able to make the right changes not based upon political dogma.   

Everyone knows that the Republicans only want to change Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid to destroy the programs and they will say anything to get this done.    This makes most Democrats afraid of any changes at all especially if a Republican suggests the changes.   Obama probably already knows the best changes to make in these programs, but he is trying to find a way to get this done without showing his hand.  

Democrats have faith in your President, he knows how to do the job, he just needs your faith and support doing it.    See how he got Osama,  he sent the terrorists a message of don't mess with me, or you will sleep with fishes.   President Obama will get done what is necessary and try to be Mr. Nice Guy, but in the end he will not let the Republicans destroy and social programs that the Democratic Party supports and are necessary for the good of the citizens of the United States.   Democrats, President Obama knows what he is doing, and he knows what he is up against.  He will deal with it.

I think we need an all or nothing president. I am tired of catering to Tea Party Anarchists. Harry Truman, FDR, Clinton was effective presidents because they had the backbone to stand up to the Republicans. I think the bill is perfect the way it is and Republicans shouldn't get the right to dismantle his plan. Pres. Obama needs to call them on it for what they really are. He needs to embarrassed the Republicans and stop being so diplomatic. You really think that Truman cared what they thought or even FDR? We need see some backbone from the Pres. If they won't pass it make a big deal out of it to the people like Truman and FDR did. They did not sit on the sidelines while they were disrespected. Even Regan did not allow people to disrespect him. He needs to go after the Republicans and highly criticism them for not doing what is best for the people. Pres. Obama needs to get angry and not fake getting angry. He needs to be stand up to them. We have not seen such disrespect of the president since the 1860s and President Lincoln. Like or not he is the president and they are going to have to deal with him or suffer the wrath of the people. Enough is enough with all this baby immature nonsense that the Republican Party is doing. You don't get to cry and take your toys home. They need to grow up and the President needs to start criticizing them for acting like babies.

Don't count on it.  Please have some respect for the POTUS.    No matter what President Obama does, it won't be good enough for the REPUKS.  It just grinds their a** that a Black Man is in the White House............SO sad.  This country could be fantastic if people would look inside the brain and not the color of their skin.  I hate the country, am considering moving to Canada.  ONLY in United STates.  God Bless you President Obama!  Please don't give up.

As long as businesses knows that those who are employed are afraid of losing their jobs and they are putting out 110% to 120% to save their jobs, management do not need to hire more employees and can keep their cost down.

HOw can either a Republican or Democratic administration solve this problem?

A President is only has good as his caucus. When the public option was apart of the healthcare bill, people like Ben Nelson, Max Baucus, and Joe Liberman voted with the Republicans. President Obama never had a super majority in the Senate or the house, and because of this he only proposed what he thought would pass. If change is really going to happen in this country, then those who obstruct helping the American people need to be voted out. Another option is term limits in Congress.

I can't believe the hate and negativity I read, especially from someone like Greg5.  He reminds me of Limbaugh!  I think of the military out there and the honor they show, not to mention the sacrifice.  They represent what America is all about as they risk their lives to protect us.  I think Greg5 should live outside our country for awhile, in a place like Somalia.  He might realize what being American means.  We are privileged to enjoy free speech and should set an example of honor and freedom by disagreeing when we want but to regard the one who holds the office of our president, with respect.  What are you doing, Greg5, to help the poor, hungry, out of work?  Do you help anyone lead a better life?  How about yourself?  I wonder...
