No caption necessary, really
During last night's Rewrite we showed you the first of Stephen Colbert's ads made with his dirty, filthy Super PAC cash. An ad that we have indeed confirmed with WHO-TV, our NBC affiliate in Des Moines, is really, actually, totally for reals and for serious running on Iowa TV stations. As promised in tonight's Rewrite, you can watch it below. You can also see the second ad that Colbert has made with his dirty, filthy Super PAC cash.
The ads are strange, hilarious, and thanks to this 5-4 Supreme Court decision... completely legal.

Larry take a breath!! Stephen Colbert is a comedian. This is a joke by Stephen. Talk to Willie Greist...I'm sure he gets it. Stephen and Jon Stewart have fun with the stupid antics of our leaders. Have you ever seen "The Colbert Report" before? ...Funny stuff!!!
Mike
The premise of the article still rings true. What Colbert is doing is legal. So you have to put it on the opposite end of the spectrum. What Colbert is doing is making a mockery of the election process. That's one end of the spectrum. The other end of the spectrum is RIGHT WING ZEALOTS are also making a mockery of the election process. In other words, comedians = right wing zealots.
The Supreme Court could have brought sanity to the process but they didn't. They decided to ensure making a mockery of our election process is a constitutional right of every American.
Oh you mean the electoral process that singles out the candidate that has the most money or that speaks the best, and not the candidate that actually has the right experience and expertise to help things? Or the process that has elected several officials that have made our congress a laughing stock to the entire planet Earth? Or maybe the one that en-debts our future president so deep to "private investors" with untraceable money that we never get anything good done? Yeah who would ever want to satirize that?
Simply put our election process is broken and a shame on every American who hasnt stood up and demanded things be changed. The only applicable use it still has that it properly accomplishes is to be made fun of. So good job Stephen Colbert, keep up the good work.
Is Lawrence O'Donnell actually angry at Colbert or is he joking? The rant on the show just now was very confusing...if he DOES actually think a comedian is doing any real harm (which is silly) he needs to explain why or lighten up...
I was confused as well by the rewrite the last two nights. I cannot tell if he is seriously pissed or just joking.
I know! I know! I'm not getting a grasp on the tone. Surely he can't be angry with Stephen—I think his showcasing the ridiculousness of the Super PAC is a benefit to society.
Wait—I watched it again. I get it! I think he's playing with it too, as Colbert would. Go watch it again.
as evidenced by the blog text: "The ads are strange, hilarious, and thanks to this 5-4 Supreme Court decision... completely legal."
I hope you're right about him playing, Lauri- it just seems odd given his usual propensity towards absolute severity...and while this blog isn't actually written by O'Donnell, hopefully it would share his sentiments...I'll give him the benefit of the doubt
Lawrence
Don't you understand that Stephen Colbert is a comedian, he acts like an ignorant Republican. He does this every night. I am a democrat and never feel any anger toward him. The last two nights have surprised both my husband and myself, while watching your strong feelings towards him.
He is pointing out the poor tactics that Republican senators and congressmen commit, to get ahead. Watch his show and relax, he is doing a great job, only through comedy. And you are doing a great job through the news media.
Please don't do this again tomorrow night, it is embarrassing, everyone knows he is a comedian FOR the Democrats.
A nightly watcher-Susan
+1
Lawrence acted like a complete moron tonight and last night. Seriously, this is the kind of stuff that makes Dems look bad.
Lawrence, I suggest you get a new job, preferably one where you aren't seen, nor heard.
the best comment yet! I used to think Lawrence was a good commentator for msnbc but now that he has his own show, yikes - He sux.
Do you guys need Lawrence holding a giant sign that says "this is comedical satire" before his show?
Talk to Willie Geist about Stephen..........he'll explain it to ya! :)
what is the matter with you people?
are you all republicans/baggers or what?
do you REALLY NOT GET THIS?
un-frickin-believable.
I wish I could agree with you, but Lawrence has never shown himself to be humorous or ironic-- did you watch his show tonight? I was pretty incredulous that he actually takes issue with Colbert, but two nights in a row with no explanation or so much as a smirk, and I have to say he's serious. Strange, yes, but do you have any evidence that he's joking?
There is a first time for everything. I, for one, am totally mesmerized. First, Cobert's ads are great, but, I expected that, but, O'Donnel's deadpan seriousness is mind-blowing. Great job, it took me almost the entire segment to snap to what you were doing. I love it, keep it going.
Yes we are republicans, so what
you are watching "the last word" with a very narrow mind. lawerence is not only a journalist, a writer, a political analyst, HE IS AN ACTOR.
it is impossible for you as a bagger/republican to watch this show without any judgement. you are automically judging him as stupid, witless and as somebody who just doesn't get it,clearly because you disagree with his politics. the fact that you all can't see that this is satire at its finest by lawerence, PROVES JUST THAT.
YOU ARE THE ONES WHO ARE JUST NOT GETTING IT.
Surprised by the anger, was wondering if was put on or genuine. Seems hard to believe no one on his staff "gets" this joke.
I was really confused when he condemned the"fear mongering"email that Colbert had sent about "Spiders in your hair," which had me cracking up the first time I read it. The collective intellect of our society is on a bit of a downswing, yes, but I think people still have a grasp on satire, and won't be tricked into giving money. Why would people bother to go to the effort of giving money to some website they've never heard of, because of some wierdo email?
Comparing money collection efforts to those Nigerian scams? Really? Those people send thousands, for nothing. Colbert viewers, who are the ones contributing, get the joke, know they are sending a few bucks for fun, and get hours of subversive entertainment in return
Sorry the more I think of this, this had to be a poorly executed attempt at comedy by lawrence. Um, stick to the straight stuff i guess?
Larry get a grip, for one of the brighter guys out there, you are out there on this one. I believe its called " satire ". I realize it's not every one likes it but come on!
Please figure out that this is all done in humor, because I'll give up your show before I give up my Colbert Report!!
Ditto
I'm with you on this, what a moron, I'm talking about Lawrence. Must not be a Colbert fan or even watched the show.
Sir, I am extremely disappointed, up until this broadcast I considered you an oasis of objective truth and journalistic integrity among the "media w***s" constantly wasting my time with nonsense. As seems to be the consensus in this discussion; I may have been mistaken. Your recent criticism of "Colbert" insults the intelligence of critical thinkers who know the difference between satire and politics. Where can I find someone who truly respects the mission and responsibility held by members of "The Third Estate"
yea for steven - make more of these puleeeze! how about a bachman ad?
I'm at something of a loss to understand why Lawrence seems to be harboring some resentment towards Stephen. Anyone and everyone who's donated money to Colbert's Super PAC should be of a pretty clear understanding that he's free, within legal and reasonable bounds of course, to do what he wants to with it.
Now some, including Lawrence for whatever reasons he has, may not like what he does with it, but you can't blame Stephen when he never made any kind of a declaration as to how said money would be used in the first place. When all is said and done, he's a comedian and the fact that he's used some of his PAC money for comedic purposes should be only natural, right?
Lawrence, no disrespect intended, but if anything does come of your calling out Stephen on his PAC and its money, I would think it only in that you're giving him more material for his show. As things stand for Colbert and his Super PAC, I find your comments regarding him rather distasteful and beneath what I've come to expect of you.
If in the future Stephen does something with his PAC money that calls for his donators and fans to take a stand on it, then we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.
It's amazing to me that a journalist, or even an adult, can't recognize what Colbert is doing. He's satirizing the whole idea of a super PAC. He is very much against being able to use unlimited anonymous money on political advertising so he's bringing the law into the forefront. And his "scare tactics" were explained on the show last night as well. He read the email word for word on the air right after explaining how candidates use that type of email to solicit donations. Seems to me that a journalist would have noticed something directly relating to the story like that.
I cannot believe these comments !!! Lawrence sharp wit along with Stephen's humor is exposing how PAC Campaign Money is corrupting our elections.
Really? Now I have great respect for Lawrence and his insight into the political world, but can you honestly tell me that any reasonably intelligent adult would watch Stephen's ads and take them seriously? I don't believe so. They're politically humorous ads and that's all that they are.
But, for the sake of argument, let's say that you do take them seriously. Stephen's ads very clearly state their PAC's name at their end, so even if you're not familiar with Stephen Colbert and what he does, all you would have to do is look him and his PAC up to realize such. Sounds simple, doesn't it?
Now when and if Stephen tries to run an actually serious political ad, which I don't believe he will, but if he does, then we'll have something to talk about.
For the sake of continuing your argument, there will be people who are lazy and might take what he promotes at face value. I completely agree, a rational person will see these for what they are, but there are people in this world who might take them seriously.
My mother and I were just having this discussion. My mother is divided on that line, as comedy, she thinks it's great, but she also sees that line where there might be a person who takes it seriously, and then you get the hanging chads and also what happened in 2010 in Alaska with the write-in campaign.
are you saying something was wrong with the alaska 2010 write-in, or that it shouldn't have happened?
Hooray for Lawrence, hooray for Stephen.
Thanks, Lawrence for giving him airtime, and thanks for playing the straight man.
Hooray for Lawrence. Hooray for Stephen. Thanks Lawrence for giving him airtime and for playing the straight man.
You rock!
Lawrence is looking like a dunce these last 2 nights. Will someone over there Puh-leeze tell him that Colbert is a satirist? I love the Colbert show, but am really disaffected with MSNBC, esp L. O'Donnell who lately seems like an obsolescent sourpuss.
He is a new class clown Lawrence
greg5,
learn to appreciate really FUNNY humor; the liberal, democratic kind.
you republicans are so stuffy.
I agree! Is his mentioning Stephen Colbert's latest folly a joke or for is he angry for real? Could he REALLY that upset and exactly why? Isn't it just comedy?
I suggest you watch the video again and I believe you will realize that Lawrence is acting and playing the straight man to Stephen Colbert. BTW, Lawrence has been on Stephen's show.
exactly!
I also am a bit confused by this. Lawrence seems truly angry about the Stephen Colbert Super Pac but he went as far as to call him a liar. I wish if he believes that he would state his case more clearly.
Lawrence you need a rewrite! You had better come clean of this on your show or you've lost me as a viewer. Maybe you don't realize how truly STUPID this political system is to younger generations, due to your time in the machine, but it's ridiculous. I can no longer celebrate what we as a nation do anymore, I take solace only in the fact that we share the same feeling of absurdity. Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert are court jesters in an empire of fools. If you think you can do more to fight for campaign finance reform on your show, which is what he is doing, then prove it!
Mr. O'Donnell, perhaps you should consider a career in feature films, because, judging from the vast majority of these comments, you are an actor of quite some talent.
Of course, the next time, we'll be ready for you and our expectations will be very high.
But, I don't doubt that you will still have a card or two up your sleeve.
I don't believe O'Donnell watched The Colbert Report Wednesday night when Colbert typed up the email ad asking for pac money, "Spiders in your Hair". I will certainly give up watching O'Donnell before Colbert. If you're serious about ragging on Colbert then your head is up your a**, if you're joking then knock it off because you're not funny.
c'mon, lawerence is very funny.
you were duped.
C'mon, Lawrence, Stephen is a COMEDIAN. People give money to his PAC because they know that he will point out Republican hypocrisy. He's not a newsman. He's funny.
I love your show Lawrence, but you missed the mark on this one. Leave Stephen alone.
You people have got to be kidding me? O'Donnell was just doing what Colbert does for Pete's sake! You can't believe that he was serious?!!
At first I thought Lawrence was kidding, but as he went on, I realized that he was 100% SERIOUS. I'm stunned. Lawrence, you've got to be kidding me. Stephen Colbert is—and will never stop—being amazing because he is a comedian/satirist, and he's exposing the truth about Super PAC's in a hilarioous way (as he always does with other political issues).
I mean, did you see his ad with all the sexy corn shots? And you took that seriously? For shame. You've been duped. I've been watching less and less of your show, and guess what? This was the final straw.
miriam,
you are the one, along with the majority of bloggers here who are duped.
you took lawerence seriously after listening to his comedic rant?
for shame.
You people have got to be kidding me? O'Donnell was just doing what Colbert does for Pete's sake! You can't believe that he was serious?!!
Question. When is Lawrence ever not serious?
I for one, in all the time I've watched his show, have never seen him try to be funny or even attempt at using political satire. Please think about that before you say that what Lawrence was doing is what Colbert does. The two are in completely different leagues.
ryan,
of course they are in different leagues.
but look at the responses here, almost everyone FELL FOR IT.
Hey Lawrence- PLEASE read these comments before you continue with the Colbert-bashing...then, watch the show.
