In today's New York Times, the editorial staff called out House Republicans for their latest effort to "repeal the 20th century." This time their target is Title I, a federal law dating back to the '60s which secures extra money for disadvantaged schoolchildren.
Last week, a House committee approved the State and Local Funding Flexibility Act which, in the words of the Times editorial, would let school districts "spend money earmarked for impoverished children on almost any educational purpose they chose." Republican Congressman John Kline sponsored the bill.
Title I was created in the Johnson administration as a safeguard to dilute systematic inequalities that have pervaded our schools since the civil rights era. These laws are considered very important pillars of civil rights because they provide an extra layer of federal funds for poverty-stricken school districts that might not have political or financial clout to receive funding. Brown v. Board of Education recognized the social injustice that stems from lack of parity in the educational opportunities afforded to all our children.
However, House Republicans seem to believe that government has no role in preventing such injustice today.

America is definetely still segregated. Take a look at Oakland County, Michigan. Rochesgter Hills residents who have foreclosed homes in their neighborhoods do not want Section 8 Housing recipients to be able to move in. They would rather let those houses sit empty This means also, that the families in Rochester Hills, whose average household income is $86,000/yr do not want their children going to school with children who come from low income houses. Class Action Law suit against any school district that uses Title I funding for anything other than helping the underserved American children.
Hopefully, Mrs. Obama will let us know how she feels about this. Probably not since it has nothing to do with Food and being 110 lbs!
So the House GOP is trying to repeal the 20th century and you attack FLOTUS? She is a great lady and is doing good work. People really like her.
Would love to know what Mrs. Obama thinks about this but I'm certain that because it has nothing to do with FooD we'll hear nothing from her!
Equality: Will we ever have equal rights for everyone. Will there always be a gap between the haves & the have nots, seperation of rich & poor. Most wealthy people worlds don't collide. If you are wealthy would you allow your children to socialize in a poor poverty stricken home. Isn't that why we move to the suburbs to seperate our children. Isn't that why you send your children to private schools so they don't mingle with the poverty stricken children. Times are now getting worse. Peoples attitudes are changing. Unless you've been exposed to some kind of poverty life, you can't relate to it. The generations of the Great Depression are dying off. There is no one to remind us what poverty really is. We are a detatched from that kind of world. I volunteered @ a food & homeless mission. It brings reallty to The Great Depression. So I adive these congress men should do more time volunteering @ poverty missions for people so they stay in touch with reallity. Don't cut funding to schools,Food Stamp Programs,Social Security,Disability for Vets & reg people. Education is the only tool many of these kids get away out of poverty. Education is what make us a better society. Education is the path to prosperity and intelligence. Teach a man to fish,he'll eat for a life time, is what Jesus said. If your going to give him a piece of, theach him how to bake it. G-d I pray that our day hasn't come to ignorance of people & life. Think the next time you drive by a school. Who is in there, maybe it's the next President of the United States in one of those class rooms.
Every Progressive proudly touts the continued need for Federally distributed social justice by citing statistics that indicate the growing gap between the rich and the poor since the 1970s and the lack of change in income inequality between whites and minorities since the 1960s. So when a set of policies has been around for almost half a century, statistics that indicate it has completely failed to deliver on its intentions are evidence these are good policies? You may be considering a trendy phrase beginning with "If only Nixon/Reagan/Bush Jr. hadn't...." in response, but that is like defending your intention to fly by blaming gravity. America is a country of vast and contrasting views and the reality that the Federal government will periodically be controlled by an opposing agenda is something to consider every time you hand it more power. I realize that both racial and wealth-based segregation remain rampant and destructive in this country, but this is precisely because we have placed the responsibility of eliminating this problem on the hopelessly inept Federal government - causing conditions that had slowly but steadily improved for several decades to stagnate at 1970s levels. Education is a terrible thing to standardize - even large States like CA and IL are examples. Title I and every other policy that allows DC to sink its teeth into local services need to be repealed yesterday. The intentions of such policies are irrelevant as they have failed completely to bring intended results.
The GOP continues their attack on all of the things that benefit regular Americans every day, from roada and bridges, to Medicare, Social Security, to education, all with an eye on turning what safety net and government services we have over to private industry. All fueled with religious extremism, fear, and hate mongering. Gotta love it.
the republican party wants to make sure that the social injustice that occurs from lack of parity in the educational opportunities afforded to all our children stays as a social injustice. they don't want another "Barack Obama" benefitting from any gov't aid that might give him or her a leg up and become president.
i have heard pat buchanan and other republicans complain loudly about the benefit that our President may have gotten with Affirmative Action, benefit that should rightly have gone to some white boy.
lets make sure we cut these kids off at the knees before they even get a taste of what a good education can do for them.
This is really,.. Expected. The right hates our children. They love to blame them at every turn. Lock them up. And quite frankly want to see minorities enslaved again. The fact that America is not number one in education in anything in the world is soooo very telling. In fact the greatest generation would have seen that as a challenge. A challenge to turn it around and make us number one. But not baby boomers. Nope!
Instead they do what they have done to the school system itself. They lower the bar. They cut cut cut there way to realize the dream of "there" children getting the privilege of private school and enlarging there own pockets. While leaving the poor and disenfranchised children with thee most lackluster education America has to offer. Look at what Texas has done to the public education system. They make up curriculum to fit there political agenda.
Why is it facts are no longer seen as facts. Let me tell you all something. Facts are facts no matter if you like them or not. They are not a political posture. They are not meant to be twisted to fit ones ideals or political view. Education is imperative to the up and coming generations. But these days our children eat CRAP! Have little to no money for anything worth while in school. NO recess. Gym one hour A WEEK. Music one hour a week. And that is progress how exactly?
Republicans and tea baggers wish to take us back to a time. A time of horse and buggy's. A time of Wilda beast and gun fire. A time when slaves were a normality. They wish to enrich the rich and impoverish the poor further. In fact there is nothing good about taking us back. That is why we move foward.
God says nothing about reverting to the ways of old. Man is meant to succeed. Not to quit. Not to remain humble in his own ignorance. Yet the right has a funny way of making America great do they not? America will NEVER make it never survive unless we ALL realize that the future is near. And in that future we must be at the ready. With knowledge. With ideas. Problem solving is as old as time itself yet, they do not want to go there,.. Do they? ; ]

Ask yourselves this. Why would anyone give tax cuts of borrowed money in a crap economy running the biggest ever deficit in history? It made since when we were running a surplus. But what business' would GIVE away money when that business is going under? Unless it was corrupt business? Is your business failing and owing money to creditors? Would you start giving employees money that you had to borrow to keep your business afloat? Or would you use that borrowed money to strengthen your business so it does not default and go under? Hmmmm ;]
