Former Sen. Rick Santorum and Rep. Michele Bachmann (file)
Rep. Michele Bachmann and former Sen. Rick Santorum became the first presidential candidates to sign an anti-marriage equality, anti-homosexuality, anti-abortion, anti-Sharia law and anti-porn pledge.
The Family Leader, a right-wing religious group in Iowa created "The Marriage Vow — A Declaration of Dependence upon Marriage and Family” with the hope that all candidates will sign. In addition to implying African American kids were better off under slavery than they are today, the pledge also asks signers to promise to be faithful to their spouses. (Insert Newt Gingrich joke here).
The man behind it, Bob Vander Plaats, a failed gubernatorial candidate (though randomly a winner in Chuck Norris’ eyes), said the pledge comes in reaction to New York state's approval of same-sex marriage and the recent sex scandals involving politicians.
The whole thing is…(where to begin?)…just out of this world. You really should read it yourself. Tell us your thoughts in the comment section below.

Does the "Marriage Vow" reference to slave babies include the babies born as a result of rape by the slave owners?
my thoughts exactly.
in reference to the swipe made to Barack Obama by michelle bachmann and by any other republican who signs this pledge: african american babies have long been raised in one-parent homes for decades. this is not a new phenomenon since President Obama took office, like the "marriage vow" strongly implies.
many people will agree that a loving marriage between two devoted people with parental skills is a good way, if not the best way to raise a child. i don't need to say here that many marriages should not produce children, but unfortunately, as i heard someone say, we need a license to drive a car, but not one to get pregnant and raise a child.
if the republicans weren't so hell-bent on compromising health care for women, all women would have a choice about whether or not to carry a fetus to term, but the republicans want to force their moral ethics on everybody, insisting that we follow their demands. the problem here is that the republican party does not care about these children after they are born. as i have said here before, abortion is often the lesser of two evils, especially in cases of rape or incest, and it should be a choice between a woman and her doctor, not the republican gov't telling us to follow their rules.
yet republicans feel that god follows these horny kids into the back seat of their car and that the resulting pregnancy, and all other pregnancies have god's blessing.
the "marriage vow" is a silly pledge, as are all the other pledges that the republicans are signing.
Was this a joke? Michele should have taken her finger out of her ear and stick it in her mouth
It can be deduced from their philosophy, that "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" only applicable to white, heterosexuals and slaves. By the way, how do they define "pornography"?
Lawrence, can you please tell the guy subbing for you today what the expression "begging the question" means. I know you know, but he has blown this in the past and continues to do so and embarrass your show. I am sure you would not be so ignorant.
Thanks,
KC
So, let me get this straight, Bachmann is the one running for president, but she insists she is a submissive wife, so to me that would mean her husband would be the president and she would only do what he told her to do. Yeah, I can see how that would work. Why do you people in MN keep electing wingnuts? Bad news. If Congress is in session why is she out on the trail for president. Is that what you people in MN elected her to do? I don't believe she is doing the job she was hired to do. You all might want to think before you elect her for dog catcher much less congress.
Very good point, Betty. Someone should ask Bachmann about that. Not that you'd get a straight (or even coherent) answer.
Two things:
1. I remember W intoning over and over again about the "sanctity of marriage." Excuse me, what's the G doing in the "sanctity" business?
2. They're protecting the "unborn." What does that mean? Does that make me "undead?"
It means they are protecting fetuses, once the baby is out of the womb they don't care what happens to it. The anti abortion people are trying to trick God into thinking they are kind, caring, compassionate people without it reflecting on their bigotry and hate for those not like them. Also from their early rants against abortion, they also think they are helping God protect the second baby Jesus, notice they never go after the rich for abortions they have, all their efforts are directed at the poor. It is also why they want to stop birth control too, even though they learned to cover up their motives with red herrings like morals.
I will sign an anti-Bachmann and Santorum vow! Where's the pen?
good one, sandy.
i'll sign it, too.
and me too!
the footnotes are the best part. Someone needs to tell them that by just stating their opinions a second time, in smaller font, does not make them true.
Your right!
Especially when they quote minority (losing) opinions of Supreme Court cases.
Seems reasonable.
Yes it certainly does ... if you are a Christo-facist, hate mongering, misogynist right wing bigot.
This blending of hyper religon and far, far right wing politics is the greatest danger to the US to come down the pike in decades. These folks should actually read the constitution rather than just spout off about things they obviously know nothing about, or have been told by other uneducated right wingers.
A stronger nation would result.
A stronger nation of Christo facists with no regard for the Constitution, actual (not re-imagined) history, human rights and with a lot of subservient women.
Charles - read and try to understand the constitution don't just be "informed" by others. Are you also ready to establish the "official" religion of the US - let me guess -you want it to be your's. Well I want it to be mine? So I guess you must be wrong.
Premeditated ignorance!
this actually makes me nervous, real nervous. the willingness by public officials to brazenly distort known truths such as the actuality of what happened to SLAVES in America. what makes me real real real nervous is the rise of national Christianity and the use of it to distort the truth as a political group. history mentions some brownshirts who also had the so called moral rights to be thugs. that lasted until the power of the real right was gained and the night of the long knives descended on the brownshirts and the REAL REAL REAL RIGHT showed its colors.
All of this sounds like "klu klux Krap"!
Bachmann is a flake and her husband is a total "SCREAMER" ! After her anti American rants .... i think i now may know the real reason !
Bachmann is so beholden to the bagger loons behind all the purity pledges its a wonder if she even remembers the real pledge of allegiance. What the heck is she campaigning for? Seems to me she has all the constituents she needs through her purity pledges signing. Sounds real cultish to me! The Cult of the Bagger Loons!
This pledge also condemns prostitution. Why does nobody complain about that? Do people in the USA really believe that sex workers are scum that doesn't deserve any rights? Prostitute is a service occupation. Therefore, prostitutes deserve respect, legal recognition and legal protection (nationwide) just like all other working people. It's a matter of equal rights.
dorothea from germany,
i agree with you. the republicans who use prostitutes and gays for their sexual pleasure do everything they can to keep them as 2nd class citizens.
they want to keep everyone in "their place".
the republican party: "do as i say, not as i do".
This stuff sound a lot like what Hiter in Germany!
Have you noticed that the party that says they want small government, wants to put it in our bedrooms? Who gave them the right to do that? Who gave them the right to decree who can be married or who must be married or who should be in sexual slavery? If they believed that, Bachman couldn't run for President, being a woman and married. If they have their way, we're only two steps away from forced impregnation and Sex Police. It can happen - Romania in earlier days is one example.
I have to ask...."is this woman for real?" how can anyone be so full of hate, bigotry and ignorance? Lets hope her message serves as a pivoting point for us to realize what this country could become with people like her in control. What a sad day for the republican party to have to stoop in the gutter for its candidates....and what a sad day for America to have to listen to them.
With someone like her in the running.. even palin becomes a bit more palatable... mind you....just a bit.
Okay, for once and for all, let's get this straight: The marriage vow does NOT say that children were better off under slavery. Please stop saying that.
It DOES, however, make a bald lie, in suggesting that slave children were even allowed to enjoy the so-called benefits of a nuclear family, since marriage wasn't permitted to slaves, and children were often sold to other slave owners, and slave couples were often split up by the white owners.
So let's at least be honest about what lie the marriage vow is telling.
Are you kidding me? Michelle Bachmann is like Sarah Palin rerun. She's not even President yet and she's already made a series of mistakes. If she becomes President she's going to start a war with the wrong part of Korean, invite the wrong family of John Gacy to the white house (which may not be a bad thing if she's there), and finally admit that she agrees if a black child BORN UNDER SLAVERY to one man and one woman is better off than a black child BORN UNDER SLAVERY raised by two parents of the same gender....seriously? One man and one woman "Trumps" << pun intended....SLAVERY?
I can't think of anything worse for family values than forcing people to have children they don't want or can't take care of. Also there are people who don't want to have kids for fear of passing on a genetic condition.
Never heard of a 'quickie' divorce? I can't believe that neither Lawrence or Jonathan had heard of this! When I was growing up in Philly in the 50s, a 'quickie' divorce could be had in a little town in Maryland (I think Elkton). All that a couple had to do was drive to Elkton, apply for a divorce, spend the night in a motel (separate rooms), and the next day a divorce was granted. I always thought that it sounded like a method of improving the motel business!
Any politician that signs an oath, pledge or vow outside the one they took for their current office, should be immediately dismissed. It sends up a huge red flag that suggests they are morally and ethically challenged, unable to serve and uphold the only oath that matters when they took office.
I think any politician that signs a pledge, oath or vow outside the one they took to uphold their current position should be immediately dismissed from their positon. It sends up a huge red flag for me. It communicates to me that these individuals who pledge themselves to an outside interest are morally and ethically challenged, unable to make solid decisions for the Americans they claim to be representing.
