Today is Anthony Weiner's last official day on the job. The Speaker's office received a copy of his resignation letter yesterday. Unlike his circus-like press conferences, his letter was short and simple:
"I hereby resign as a member of the House of Representatives for New York's Ninth Congressional District, effective at midnight, June 21, 2011. It has been an honor to serve the people of Queens and Brooklyn."
In this Last Word web extra, Lawrence adds some much-needed perspective to this ending saga.

What the hell ELSE is there to possibly say about this tired tale?
lol @ the number of times Mr. Gingrich's picture showed up. There are no bounds for that guys list of mistakes and hypocricy.
Oh come on Lawrence. Really? Highlighting other politicians' perversions to minimize those of Weiner's? The guy is a perv and just because he didn't do something as "bad" as the others doesn't let him off the hook. Really disappointed in you but gotta admire your loyalty to your buddy!

He DID lie to his Wife, his constituents, the press, and the American People.
Something happens to credibility after that, and politics should not be the thing to make you ignore that, no matter how much hate you have inside.
I am very disappointed in Congressman Weiners' decision to send intimate photos of himself to this young woman. It wasn't a smart move, and from someone I regarded as a rising star in the democratic party, his behavior is bothersome. However, he didn't have an affair in the true sense of the word, and he did not drag his wife into the mess he created...for the world to see. That said, everyone else needs to mind their own damn business!!
What Lawrence said basically was "let's just get some perspective here." I continue to be amazed at how the Republicans can engage in the most depraved behavior both personally, and politically and still manage to manipulate us to this orgasm of moral indignity when a Democrat gets caught. Just listen to us!! How do we let them do this to us? They do their damage control behind the scenes but publicly stand by their men. Not one major Republican broke ranks to revile or call for the resignation of one of their own. As soon as the story broke Harry Reed said he needed to resign with the finishing touch "If it was me I'ed resign," supplied by Obama himself. I do not know how they manage to hold their gag reflexes in the presence of some the most repugnant Republican abuses of the public trust but they do and and we let them off the hook! Somehow with this hippocrital flim flam we are convinced to let them continue holding the high ground on American morality. Why do they have this strange power over us?
