Lawrence, just to say that I think you've made the best case YET as to why the Edwards' prosecution should go forward. Thanks for a thoughtful review of the real issue here: it's not about Edwards, it's about the corrupting influence of secret money in campaigns.

(PS I disagree with you about Weiner tho - the man destroyed his own credibility by repeating lying to his constituents and the media. He, just like the Craigslist guy, should resign from office for a violation of the public trust.)

I am in agreement that John Edwards should be prosecuted but if he is convicted why should he not pay whatever penalty is required? That is the law. There are many criminals who are embarrassed by the press, of course not many have lost their bid for the presidency but how does that consititute a reason not to pay for their crime? Why are politicians exempt from punishment because they have been "humbled" Totally disgusting.

No jail time for Edwards if convicted?? Because he's already been soooo shamed and embarassed by his poor behavior and adultry??? So I guess "how the mighty have fallen" should be his full penalty? His shame, etc. was the price for poor behavior - the price for the new, separate CRIME should be "covered" by his "price paid" for his non criminal behavior?? If we're going to suggest that the rich and famous should receive lesser penalties than the poor and unknow - hell, lets go all the way. If Edwards IS convicted lets make sure he gets a really nice cushy jail cell; after all he is so used to posh living it would just be too harsh to make hime live in a "regular" jail envirnment. Johnny should go to jail if convicted - feeling REAL BAD just doesn't cut it.

This is such a small, petty case compared to the Wallstreet crooks who continue to go unprosecuted. That being said, I hope they get tougher on ALL campaign finance (which has been abused by many for far too long) and start reigning more politicians in. Sarah Palin gets to keep all the money she's raising under the guise of running for President, Haley Barbour got to keep all he raised before announcing that he wasn't going to run. There should be a more clear enforcement of rules on these issues. And I fully expect John Ensign to be prosecuted in 5+ years too.

As for John Edwards I do think we let our knowledge of his personal life color our perception of the case. We know that he's a class A hypocrite and bad husband, but we also know that the wife of his children is gone, so if he goes to prison, which he probably should, what happens to those children (including the infant)? Such a sad downfall for what seemed like a great politician just a few years back.

 Larry, I guess now that Weiner fessed up and proved that its him in the photo and that he called press conferences to lie about it, that he sent it and other inappropriate photos and had made inappropriate sexual comments with women on his twitter account, etc, that you should also be apologizing to OReilly for your inappropriate threats made on the air about your wanting to disclose things about him.  Everything goes around in a circle Larry and you proved that your comments were outrageous and inappropriate

Look what he has really done he brought 2America's up for and fought for people with out a lobbyist. Personal life is just that.He disappointed the people he loved the most. Rebuilding faith of forgiveness lies with the Edwards family. I believe he has learned and given a mission he will succeed .To continue the war on poverty and live a life your children can be proud of. Yet doesn't seem to ever be a cautionary tale to others. You will see him back in the public when he is ready John Edwards will be an advocate for the other America that is hungry,homeless who are children.
