President Obama giving a speech on the deficit in Washington on Wednesday.
What do you think of President Obama's speech on the budget? The thread is open. Just a friendly reminder, this is a respectful discussion. Please be cool and keep it clean.

President Obama did the 'grown-up weighing in' thing again. He's good at it. I'm willing to yield to reality as long as 'redistribution of pain' becomes more fair.
See historic revenue to GDP ratios and get back to me.
I have a lot of respect for the President, however I am frustrated how he goes on about how the Republicans "...want what is best for America..." simply because I don't agree. I know he is probably right in spirit, but I don't feel the GOP is for fairness or for the middle class.
You are so right. Same-old, same-old.....
What on earth do you think the Republicans have done for this country since Ronald Reagan? He increased taxes numerous times; he grew big government (and became the problem he photo-opped about); Newt Gingrich would have bankrupted us years ago had it not been for a diligent Democratic President Clinton, who kept the GOP Congress' feet to the fire and balanced the budget and made the economy boom; Bush 2 - in one fell swoop - before 9-11 - gave away trillions in tax cuts to the wealthiest of the wealthy, then started 2 wars (one of which was totally illegal "Iraq"), brought in prescription drug program - all of which are not paid for and broke the economy, when at the eleventh hour had Paulsen and himself show up on live television - in all their sweaty glory - begging congress to bail out the banks, the mortgage companies, and the auto industry! Remember that?
Now all you "righties" out there, are cynical enough to think that the American public has forgotten all of that history, and are willing to place all the blame for the mess we - and indeed the entire world - are in on President Obama?
What kind of idiots do you take us for?
You guys all, and I mean ALL better brush up on your own history! Get into some real discussion about fixing this wonderful nation...and learn that the Social Security and Mediacre that your parents and grandparents are receiving is due to - and only to - the Democrats over the last 70 years! Get with it and start building a decent legacy for yourselves!
If Obama thinks the GOP is going to work with him......I say, "Think again."
The Republicans are not going to do anything with tax increases because they expect to control Congress and the White House after 2012. They expect Obama to be the one to make the cuts now because that would end his reelection chances. I see a standoff.
Obama is absolutely right - - hope he doesn't give in. This bi-modal economy is out of control.
AMEN brother! Deep line in the sand!
Earlier I tweeted "Why is it so hard to message cut to revenue ratios" to Maddow. Bam. The President delivered. Breathes there a soul so dead in the GOP that won't recognize 3:1 as a reasonable plan?
Mr Obama needs a crash course in economics, banking, private enterprise, taxation and American history. He says things that are just plain stupid and I am shocked at the utterances of this uninformed President. He doesn't think Warren Buffet needs another tax break? Was that him trying to be funny? I just don't understand his ramblings. Take away his monitors and I'm sure it would be worse. The speech was boring and empty!!!
Warren Buffet also doesn't think he needs another tax break. Neither do several thousand millionaires who signed onto "Millionaires for Fiscal Sanity"
What speech were you watching?
"Take away his monitors and I'm sure it would be worse." Way to go out on a limb like that 3314147. But wouldn't taking away the monitors from someone giving a speech pretty much make things worse for any person giving a speech? Also, I'd sure love to see some of your expertise on economics, banking, private enterprise, taxation and American history. You know . . . any jackass can burn down a barn.
“There’s class warfare, all right but it’s my class, the rich class, that’s making war, and we’re winning.” Buffett.
You must be a truly ignorant, greedy and selfish one. I think what he said was quite clear to any rational person who is not selfish and greedy.
I am in the dying middle class and trying to start a business and I am considering donating a lot more this year to re-elect him.
I want him to cut the military. Cut out the outside contractors doing the cooking, cleaning and maintaining the general stores. The military did that before and they can do it again much cheaper than the contractors. We know who the big contractors are and how they are connected with the politicians. I am sure that would be many billions right there.
As far as the big Bush tax cuts...Look, for me, when the Bush tax cuts came I made about $60 per month more...oh how that helped me(sarcasm). I would gladly give that up if the rich would give up theirs too.
Just go back to the tax structure before Bush..the Clinton tax structure.
Beth, did you say anything of substance in your post? You complained, but really didn't give any detail about what you were complaining about. THAT has been a large part of the issue in this budget... ppl complain and complain, but when it comes down to specifics they become strangely silent or vague.
Another ridiculous Bagger rant that goes nowhere.
"amnottheman" you are backwards...not a good thing in reality, might want to get that checked out. You understand preventive care? Of course, you dont! It's probably too late for preventive, but you do make a good prime example! Still not a good thing though...but, there's always Dr. Phill! Yay for Dr's! I mean boo! Its hard to explain to a backwards person! Its easy...UGGHH! How do the GOP's do it!?!??
annno,
who is "Operas"?
did you mean O-p-r-a-h?
Warren Buffet said in effect that taxes weren't fair when he paid less income tax percentage wise, than his secretary. If tax breaks were the answer to creating jobs we would have seen a trend in job growth during the Bush years. Instead, tax incentives were given to companies to off-shore jobs and those incentives are still in place. The economic theory of "trickle down economics" being trotted out again has never worked. We have flat-lined wages to prove it. I think it's worth noting that the wealthy did not get where they are without the support American labor making and buying their products. Fair taxation relative to one's income is not out of line.
arthur8
Independent?? LOL I dont think you even know what you are!
i don't think a teleprompter could help you, annno.
Somebody needs to get around to you! This is America, the nation that helps, that's all we are trying to do...help you so you can help yourself, you seem brainwashed into thinking that America's positive is negative and negative is positive.
you wrote-"your mearly a thief and to stupid..."
correction-"YOU'RE m-e-r-e-l-y a thief and TOO stupid..."
did your mother, who you said homeschooled you if i remember correctly, not concentrate on English, grammar and spelling?
Annottheman, The "pimp hand" of God needs to come down and B***H slap some sense into you! 4real! (I will pray for you) You must love preying on the needy. Bcause if your pockets were really as empty as you say they are, you wouldn't have anything to worry about concerning your money i.e no more tax cuts, since it ONLY applies to the rich who CAN afford it! And if you do have to pay out a little bit more from your check for taxes, boo-hoo, suck it up like a real American does! Atleast you know your "donating" for a good cause and you can thank Bush for the deficate (on purpose) he slung on America, the deficit stinks of the biggest terrorist that I have seen, throught my 28 years on earth! Now call me a lame hag again! Atleast you spelled it right, thanks to your ma, you know that term inside and out! BTW, I'm more hip to society and trend than you think, but don't take my word for it, you can call me what you want, I'm not that easily influenced by $$, but you on the other hand, sound like you would bend over for a pork-chop! How are you going to turn your back on your own fellow Americans, who just so happen to be needy, due to the facts that exist?? In reality, there are people in Ameica, that has fought for this country, SHOUT OUT TO ALL VETERANS! Many people in need and this is the thanks they come "home" to? "Let them lamea$$ stupid Americans die", is your favorite comeback?? Please, go take a look in the mirror, you cold-hearted maggot! HOOAH!!
I agree we need to fix things but unemployment is still very high and the elderly and children of America need the help charity should begin at home not everywhere else Get people back to work buy American and save our country
I would buy American if I could but practically everything has been outsourced. When was the last time you found a Nike product manufactured in the USA? North Face? Nope! Levi? Nope! Carhart? Mostly nope! Even many food products are imported.
Yes, margaret that is true! But what about the families that turn their backs on each other? Just bcz they dont bow down to their religious beliefs, for example. A rebellious run away teen, most of us has been one before...who should they turn to, when there's nobody else, due to so much division within the homes across America, it starts with the American people. Ive needed help and I have opened my home to these situations before, some I wish I hadn't, (God has blessed me in the long run) but I learned a lot through the good and the bad, not recommending taking risks of these sorts, just letting people know that it does not hurt all the time to help, but Margaret I do believe you are correct, it should begin at home. In most cases it doesn't though, unfortunately, it then sets on the shoulders of America, in so many ways. That's what makes America great! I do believe God has and will continue to bless this nation. Some people call it karma or "what goes around comes around"....Good will come back to you so you can give it to somebody that needs it and the bad will come back and bite you in the a**.
a hit dog will bark!
I'd prefer NOT to sell the truth! FYI...bark, bite and voice....same difference! You would be just one of the few, that doesn't get the hint, wink wink.
The Republicans were misquoted in 2010. What they actually meant was 'Pulling the plug on Grandma's....Medicare.'
yes. who is REALLY behind the "death panels"?
I fear all the amazing speeches he does gets lost because rather then debate with words the opposition throws poops and batcrap crazy ideas about issues the 7 people in their heads hate the most . kinda hard to move forward.
Obama in right on. The bi-modal economy must be reversed. Back to the middle - - bottom rises, top decends.
To say that any debt reducing cost or revenue is a "non starter" is not only stupid....but the statement itself is a -non starter. Everything is on the table. I want my Govt to take action now to seriously reduce the deficit by a balance of cuts and tax revenues- from those who can most afford them. So far, the balancing appears to have been solely on the backs of the poor, elderly and disabled. This is wrong. And stiking this balance must be in a manner which does not inpact the fragile economic recovery. Thread the needle Pres Obama.
There's still almost no discussion of where the money is in the U.S. economy. The federal budget debates are so breathless and fraught that most folk think federal spending is the largest part of the economy, when it is dwarfed by corporate profits and the income of the very wealthy. The fetishization of "balanced budgets" and "deficits" and "national debt" are canards, based on a misunderstanding of how federal spending and funding is fundamentally different than spending and funding for households, state and local governments, and businesses. For a clear and concise explanation, see Warren Mosler's "The Seven Deadly Innocent Frauds of Economic Policy".
Huh!? How many times are they (Republicans) going to have to smack him around for him to get the picture?
I applaud Pres. Obama for continually trying to extend the olive branch and work out things diplomatically, I only wish that were true for all members of Congress. We did not get to this point in the debt and budget in 2 yrs. The country was busting at the seams and financially stable in 2000, but began a slide downward over the next 8 yrs and then finally ran into the bottom of the well. It is impossible to rebuild in 2 yrs what damage began the previous 8 yrs. No amount of yelling from O'Connell and tears from John Boehner is going to bring logical, realistic minds to the table. The Pres is correct, we are all in this for the long haul. The financial balancing of the budget cannot be totally absorbed by the middle class. The only way to truly have a fair tax system is by having 1 tax bracket. 15% for all AND no deductions for anyone. That would also reduce the IRS staffing and save trillions over the yrs. This is a true call to smaller government and reduced spending.
Like your reply....you give no evidence, make no direct comment aside from the Presidents attempt at humor..which is rarely good. Please cite what you are talking about or it just comes off as a bitter tangent.
He said it! He put what most progressives feel on the table. I am glad to hear him say that he will not allow Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid be changed as we know it. I am one of the millions of people that rely and need those services. The wealthiest do need to pay their fair share. I have HIV and I have to take a medication that costs about $2000 per month. I don't get tax breaks and I don't get to use tax loopholes like the wealthiest get to use. If they (Republicans and Democrats) don't want to raise the tax rate on the wealthiest, then CLOSE the loopholes.
great speech and to the point. let's hope these promises can be kept
Back to reality, there's hope and OMG! We found common ground! You have empty pockets too?! We both must do something about this! Any suggestions? I know! I know! Vote Democrat!
u say that like its a bad thing...???
In contrast to the draconian cuts proposed in the Republicans' House proposal (and the mind-boggling refusal of Republicans to consider fair-share tax increases for the wealthy), the President's intelligent presentation reflected broad-based reductions and sacrifice, while maintaining basic stability for vital programs. Quite frankly, a broad-based, balanced approach is needed in this huge problem. Reaction to his speech may be intense, particularly by Republicans. But the GOP of today is not at all the principled and respected Republican Party of decades ago. The GOP's preoccupation with protecting the wealthiest, protecting corporations under dishonest guises, and minimizing programs benefiting the vast majority of the country is elitism at its worst. A tragic change!
My favorite phrase was "Spending in the tax code". Now that is a spending cut I can support.
The Republicans want to destroy the middle class and low income people it time the rich started to pay a little more. The President needs to get tough with republican and tell them NO NO NO!!!!!
Hey Annno, if that is the case, then why was the Clinton tax structure so successful? As soon as we cut taxes to those wealthy individuals and companies by BUSH, we spiraled down in our economy. This is clear as day, why can't the GOP see this? We really do not NEED to be the police of the world. The bullcrap war BUSH got us into has hurt us more than anything any president has done. We had the real culprit of 9/11 in our sights and let him go because of BUSH.
We have all seen the figures on how much we spend on military compared to the rest of the world, the world needs to work together. We have to stop thinking we can change everyone. Let's pull back, re-group and watch them for a while as we fix our own problems. Do not do any business with those countries that oppress people, do not let their dignitaries or people in general come to the US from those countries. We need to put pressure on them if we want them to change their ways. There are more creative ways to solve these problems. Stop walking on eggshells around these scumbag dictators and terrorists or terrorist countries. We do not need them, but they need us.
We need to tax imports from these low wage countries, this way they are forced to raise the wages so we allow the goods back in with less restrictions.
There are really a lot of ways to solve our economic crisis, people just need to work together and suck it up, especially the rich. Just because someone is rich, it does not mean they are smart.
Believe me, I will not be voting for those that hide in a corner in our government. The next election will be very interesting because people in general are very upset with our current congress and that includes the tea party and GOP. No more lifetime politicians, if you can't make things better in a couple terms, then you do not deserve to be there.
I do agree with you on the loan issues, but it was a pretty large group of people who did this and I do not think one party was responsible. There was a plan that would be backed by the government to the wall street and bank execs. I think both sides made a lot of money. The 97% of Americans that pay taxes got screwed by all the damn politicians and wall street. People in general borrowed more than they should have, but they were also led like cows being led to slaughter to do this through advertising. It was a big scheme to end up ripping off the taxpayers and assuming NO accountability. Yes, I see in many colors, not just black and white.
I do believe that we should get what we pay for and everyone should do something in our society and not just leech off of us. Disabled and elderly should be taken care of, do we really want people living on our streets or in gutters, what kind of people would we be if we did that?
Start acting like adults and realize that life is short, put in your fair share to society, do not be totally selfish and treat others as you wish to be treated....! If you want the roads, police, fire dept, and other services that come with an advanced country, then we all have to pay for it.
Great speech. A great reminder that the GOP represents corporations. The GOP plan from Ryan is a clear indication the GOP doesn't care if the US goes to ___— as long as they give to their rich donors. Fairness doesn't exist in the GOP.
Excellent speech with balance, shared sacrifice, and vision for the future. The Republican House version, with draconian cuts of programs benefiting millions while affording protection for the wealthiest, reflects elitism at its worst. I wish the President well in the tumultuous days which will follow!
Two words: Simply Amazing. I am always astounded and moved when our President speaks. He really understands the pains of the working class because that's where he came from. Bush 2 could never, ever understand because he came from money. This should prove to everyone that the President is indeed on the side of the average American. No More Tax Cuts for the Wealthy!
The vision that Pres Obama laid out for our country. This is the Country I love. This is the Country I want. How we take care of the less fortunate in our society, the weaker, the elderly will influence the strength of our country.
Good for the president. Tell the republicans NO NO NO NO!!!!!
