One of the five protesters being arrested on Capitol Hill Thursday.
Five protesters linked arms, sat on the floor blocking a hallway, and chanted slogans against Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Planned Parenthood today in the Hart Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill near Sen. Reid's office. They shouted things like:
"Harry Reid is a killer!"
"Abortion is murder!"
"No compromise! Defund Planned Parenthood."
One among the five made it clear that social issues should be part of the on-going budget discussions on Capitol Hill... even as the federal government is one day and a few hours from shutting down.
The protesters are from a group called The Society for Truth and Justice. A spokeswoman for the group made their goal as clear as crystal telling NBC News:
"Congress must stop funding the Planned Parenthood criminal syndicate, the nation's largest child killer and aider of child sex traffickers and child molesters. By continuing funding for Planned Parenthood, the Democrats collaborate with child killers, child molesters, and sex traffickers, which is a threat to both the born and pre-born. It is time for the Democrats to really protect women and girls by defunding Planned Parenthood now."
"It is time for the Democrats to really protect women and girls by defunding Planned Parenthood now."
According to Planned Parenthood's own breakdown of its numbers, in 2009 abortions accounted for three percent of the services the group provided. That's right... three percent. Thirty-five percent of Planned Parenthood services were various kinds of contraception. Another thirty-five percent went to the testing and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases and infections. Sixteen percent of Planned Parenthood's 2009 services went to cancer screening and prevention and another ten percent to other women's health services (pregnancy tests, prenatal treatment, etc.).
But these protesters are focusing only on three percent of what Planned Parenthood does. Lawrence will talk more about this in tonight's Rewrite on The Last Word (8PM ET/PT).
