Portman at the Academy Awards on Feb. 27
Possible 2012 GOP Presidential contender and Fox News contributor Mike Huckabee was none too thrilled with Oscar-winning Best Actress Natalie Portman's acceptance speech at Sunday's Academy Awards, in which the engaged star of "Black Swan" mentioned her pregnancy. According to Media Matters (click for audio), Huckabee told syndicated radio host Michael Medved it's "troubling" to see people like "Natalie Portman or some other Hollywood starlet who boasts of, 'Hey look, you know, we're having children, we're not married, but we're having these children, and they're doing just fine,'" adding "it's unfortunate that we glorify and glamorize the idea of out of children wedlock." During Portman's speech, she thanked fiancé Benjamin Millepied, "who choreographed the film, and has now given me my most important role of my life." Medved said that Millepied "didn't give her the most wonderful gift, which would be a wedding ring! And it just seems to me that sending that kind of message is problematic." Media Matters notes "Black Swan" is distributed by Fox News' sister company Fox Searchlight Pictures.

Just another supposed christian who is passing judgment on another person.
What is Huck's stance on Newt giving out three of those wedding rings? I dont think Huck is running for President, otherwise he would not be dishing out this "culture war" stuff, Portman, Kenya etc. Right now all Huck is doing is pushing his latest book.
Will Huck have the balls to say the same thing about the most famous single mother in the country Bristol Palin? It would never mention her name out of fear of the Momma Grizzly Sarah Palin.
Excuse me, the Boy Scouts are an International Organization....(MOES) Mom of Eagle Scout. Huck.... What a Dope !
So much for "Judge not, lest ye be judged." You know, I might point out, if we accept the biblical account, Christ's parents weren't exactly married either.
Well okay. One of them was, but not to the other.
I just did a quick search on "Mike Huckabee" and "Bristol Palin." I didn't see any comments. If anyone knows of any he made, I'd be happy to see them.
Oh, fascinating. I did find some comments:
No brimestone and fire for Bristol. No making an example of her. Just gratitude that it's a family sticking together. Needless to say I was not shocked by my discovery.
Remember Bristol is a christian and Portman is a jew. I guess Jews shouldn't be pregnant oow. If you are white and christian it's okay. BTW, I am sure Portman is being supported by family as well, but it's not right. I guess it's also not good that she is keeping the baby and marrying the baby daddy unlike Bristol. Double standard.
Not to mention Portman is highly acclaimed, intelligent, NOT a teenager... And engaged. I think he barked up the wrong tree here...
I was appalled that he stated MOST single mothers are poor, uneducated, can't find a job, etc. UGH!!
What about the countless single mothers who do an excellent job raising their child(ren), and are single because they have left abusive relationships, etc. He is over-simplifying this whole issue. Making single mothers the villain, though... never a good play in my eyes.
Why can't you be less of a hack and show the rest of what Huckabee said instead of very short clips to try and make him out to be a liar? After all was it not HILLARY CLINTON that said I remember it clearly getting off the plane UNDER SNIPPER FIRE! Give us all a break with your hypocritical analysis.
You left a lot out and my bet is you never got on Hilary Clinton for being a Deliberate Habitual liar that she constantly and consistently has turned out to be
Huckabee is a crazy Christian zealot, and typical. Christian zealots put their nose into places it doesn't belong. Huckabee has no license, or credit, telling anyone how to live their lives.
hmmmmmmm...and he said Chris Matthews is off his meds???? wow..
what an utter prick
Very interesting Mr. Huckabee.Sara palin paraded her unmarried pregnant teen age daughter Bristol, all over the media when sara was selling the "real America" on the V.P. campaign trail & huckabee didn't say a word. Now bristol is making millions as a spokesperson for ABSTINENCE,while still unmarried,& hawking comdoms on commercials shown during DWTS.Still no comment from huckabee. Now the poster child for abstinence has a book deal & will explain how, her"mistake"affected her bank acct.Silence from huck.Obamma, says huckabee,is not a "real" American because he didn't play baseball as a kid (neither did I),no, Obamma played basketball, just like, wait for it... Sara "Baracuda"Palin.can't hear you mike.
I must have MISSED Huckleberrys comments about Bristol Palin being pregnant & not being married, ... & his condemming her
Mick Huckleberry, ... the new Dan Quayle, or is it Mike Dukakis, ... as Govenor of Arkansas, letting a guy out on parole who then killed 4 cops
When Huckabee repeated Dan Quayle's unwed and pregnant philosophy, he joined a long list of Reflublicans.
When Huckabee repeated Dan Quayle's unwed and pregnant philosophy, he joined a long list of Reflublicans.
Huckabee going after Hollywood while allowing his own kind Sarah Palin, Bristol Palin, you know the type, those who hide behind alleged Christian beliefs parading their unwed pregnant daughters along the campaign trail while pointing at everyone else, standing against health care for all, equity in education, access to fair pay you know real pro life values. I am so sick of these fake Christian types...Sickening. Wear little crosses around their necks, step over the poor and less fortunate as they head off to church. Enough of this bull crap and hypocrisy
Fox News commentator, what do you expect?
Last night, March 3, 2011 Mr. O'Donnell made a false statement in the story about Huckabee. He claimed that "100% of America's girls have not been in Boy Scouts."
I am a Boy scout chaplain, and in our unit, which comprises a Troop, a Venture unit, and an Explorer unit there are no less than 4 females in the Venture and Explorer units.
Huckabee needs to put a sock in it.
Like him or not he is right! We compromise too much and have been rewarded with poor poor standards. Our country was founded under God. Fornication is a sin. There are teenage girls who make packs to get pregnant at the same time. The MTV teen reality show leads young girls to believe it is cool to get pregnant. The reality, it is hard unselfish work.
learn how to spell, first of all
yes, it is hard, unselfish work.
"fornication is a sin" ??? I hope that you are kidding.
I'm a single mom, have earned a Master's degree, was a senior manager in a high tech company, and now own my own business. So what was your point? Mr. H?
As can or should be expected, he over-simplifies and villifies... I am a sinlge mother also, highly educated, devoted to my children, gainfully employed...
It is so sad that he made these comments and I feel this is what he truly believes.
I have not voted for a Republican for national office in my life, and I'm over 60 years old. I mention this in the hope of deflecting knee-jerk reactions to what I'm going to say.
Huckabee has said a lot of things in this past week that are either incredibly ignorant or (more likely) callously politically motivated. But it is, in my opinion, very unfair to lump his comments concerning the increasing phenomenon of children born to single mothers in this same class. I'm not bashing single mothers, or even judging them. But the evidence from decades of social science research is clear that, on average, children do better in two-parent households--and the difference isn't only in levels of income. (And, to head off some knee-jerk reactions, I'm not denigrating two-mother or two-father households. Children seem to do well in stable households of gay and lesbian couples, too.) But single parents have, on average, fewer resources--both financial and emotional--to provide for children than do couples.
Tonight, O'Donnell (for whom I generally have a lot of respect) had to twist Huckabee's words--in much the way that people like Limbaugh and Beck twist the words of those they criticize--in order to vilify Huckabee for his comments on single motherhood. Huckabee did NOT say that hetrosexual marriages had to be "preserved at all costs." O'Donnell put those words in his mouth. It was classic Limbaugh, though fortunately without the audible sneer that Limbaugh offers when he gives his portrayal of the opponent he is trying to ridicule.
Again, this is not a bashing of single mothers. Many do a wonderful job of raising their children. Many are not single mothers by choice. No one should deny this. But, on average, children of single parents do worse on every measure of childhood well-being and life prospects than children raised by two parents, even adjusting for income and education. And, many mothers are single by choice. Many choose single motherhood from the outset and many choose divorce and not to remarry. Though this comes as news to some, sociologists who study such matters have known for decades that 2/3 of divorces of parents are desired by, and initiated by, mothers. And issues such as adultery and abuse by the husband accounts for a small fraction of these divorces (according to the reports of the mothers who wanted the divorce).
I'm not out to vilify those who seek divorces, either. (I am divorced, at my choice.) But let's not pretend that there aren't costs imposed on children by these choices--and the costs are highest when we cling to a winner-takes-all system of child custody. Enforce a strong presumption of both legal and physical joint custody upon divorce, and then mothers and fathers living separately can both contribute financially and emotionally to the rearing of their children. It's a second-best solution but sometimes that's the best that can be done.
And the first step is for us to recognize that single parenthood is not, on average, best for children. Until we liberals can be honest about this, in light of all of the social science research that supports that conclusion, we will be losing the support of many in middle America who know that this is true. And, we will lose credibility--just as O'Donnell lost credibility tonight.
Re: libertarian view of any definition of marriage. There is a big difference when it comes to polygamy. In a normal population distribution, we find approximately 50/50 male and female. When polygamy is practiced, a certain percentage of boys MUST be eliminated. Often, as in the case of the mormon polygamists, the boys are literally thrown away. That is the real problem with polygamy.
Mr. Huckabee was referring to how the MEDIA and others were praising Natalie Portman and winning the Best Actress award and being pregnant and unmarried..etc.. Yes Bristol became pregnant and was planning to get married when she found out she became pregnant... We all should be thankful neither woman didn't abort their babies...
