Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker said his so-called budget repair bill must be passed by today or layoffs would begin. Lawrence spoke with two Wisconsin state lawmakers, Democratic Rep. Cory Mason and Republican State Sen. Glenn Grothman, about the on-going standoff in Madison and the GOP's push to stop protests inside the State Capitol building.
Sen. Grothman said they are trying to shut people out because the place is "becoming a pigsty." He also called protesters staying overnight in the Wisconsin Capitol "slobs." When pressed to clarify he remarks, he insisted all those people were just a bunch of "college students having a fun party."

The right wing has had the plan of privatizing our public sector for years and the dismantling of the Middle Class is their way of achieving their dastardly duty. It got its big start with the beginning of the economic downturn with many of us losing our jobs and our pensions and other retirement benefits. Then many of us lost our homes due to the illegal mortgages we were sold, knowingly sold, even though we didn't fully understand what we were sold, they took us for stupid presenting us with their "legaleze". Now that they are tempting us with what looks like a rebound in the economy only because Wall Street is rebounding, it's time to hit us again before we become too sure of ourselves. "Hit 'em while they're down." So here it comes, attempting to take the Middle Class down through the dismantling of the Unions, first public, then private. Then they will move the private corporations in to take over the empty positions that must be filled, because the services still have to be done. The schools will go private and only a few public schools will survive. Only a few lower Middle Class who can afford books will be able to send their children to school and only a handful of teachers will have a job. Some hand-picked teachers will move on to private schools, if they are the "chosen" ones. Fire and police departments, as well as parks will become privatized. Republicans, esp. the Tea Party want small government, they will get it IF we allow it. They will have privatized everything. Even more private prisons than we already have. And we think living expenses are high now. Just wait until the corporations move on in...there will be no ceiling to the expense and the Middle Class will virtually disappear. The separation of classes is only beginning.
But we can stop it IF we ALL UNITE with the Unions NOW. We MUST realize that we are not standing with unions, we are standing with the Middle Class, and that is US.
Just a note .... the private school teachers you refer to as the "chosen ones" make even less than public school teachers and have far fewer benefits because they do not have unions. You wouldn't want a job in most private schools unless you couldn't get a job in a public school. Teacher morale in private schools is generally low, especially in the parochial schools. The private/parochial schools have done a good PR job over the years to try to convince people that their teachers were superior. They're not. In fact, most teach in private schools because they couldn't measure up to the public school standards
Yes, private school jobs frequently pay MUCH less than public schools. But... "In fact, most teach in private schools because they couldn't measure up to the public school standards." I just have to disagree here. Many of the teachers (not ALL, but many) in private schools do so out of personal conviction for the religious or educational beliefs they hold dear, and are willing to put their money where their beliefs are. And, yes, many of them have spouses with decent incomes, who allow them to survive on what they make. Many Catholic Dioceses (at least in my state) have similar license requirements for their teachers that the state does. They may allow teachers some leeway in teaching while pursuing coursework in education toward a license, (which the state does, under "emergency licenses" in shortage areas) but the Diocese may choose to not accredit a school where teachers are not in any way licensed.
I strongly support the right of public educators to be unionized, and believe it does amazing things for children in those schools. I also believe that public educators, on the whole, will be more highly-qualified if they are compensated at higher levels, because it will attract highly-qualified professionals from the private sector to share their knowledge. Why not have ENGINEERS teaching kids to be engineers? Just a thought. Having said that, I must say I feel non-unionized, private school educators should be, for the most part, given recognition for teaching from their very large hearts for unselfish reasons where they feel they can do the most good. And I applaud the sacrifices they make for the kids they teach. :)
How many private schools are equiped to educate special education students. What happens to them?
In the stae of Wisconsin schools are required to offer less than 1150 of instruction and pay teachers an average of more than 50,000 a year. If I could make more than 40 dollars an hour w/ a BA I don't know that I would complain that when so many schools are having finacial difficulties I couldn't afford a slight pay cut. Unions ruin schools.
I have a special ed nephew. He lives in Denver Co. Our family makes sure he gets the best education our family can afford, because the public school system had not program for him. We don't rather fancy public education anyway, but we were told to check the schools. My nephew would be terribly underserved had we left him to public education. He is fortunate that we would make this sacrafice for him. Others with his disability may not have been so.
Until recently (2010) WI did not require non-public schools to be accredited. The Catholic schools were accredited, however a lot of private (for profit) charter schools in Milwaukee were not. Every state has different rules. In Iowa non-public schools can be accredited or non-accredited. However, in order to receive any state funding (free busing, book fees, etc) the non-public school must be accredited by the State Dept. of Education (In WI the accreditation can come from other sources). All Catholic Schools in Iowa, and most non-denominational Christian schools are accredited, some aren't, for various reasons. Non-public school teachers are almost always paid less than public school teachers, and have less benefits. However there are (or have been) exceptions. Public school teachers in Iowa pay more for health insurance than most private sector employees, and have not had 100% of their health insurance premiums covered in over 20 years. However until recently teachers at a local Lutheran school still had 100% of their health insurance covered (not just single coverage, but family plan).
My children attended K-12 Catholic schools, and in K-5 there are few male teachers (only PE) because they can't afford to raise a family on the low salary. There are more male teacher's in middle and HS, but most male teachers are either young and single, or have a spouse with a better paying job that allows them to fulfill their passion for teaching. Each year Catholic school's lose great teachers to the public system, because of the better pay and retirement benefits. As a result Catholic schools have tried to bring their pay closer to public school, and offer benefits. Most Catholic school teachers could not teach if their spouse did not have a better paying job, however that is also true with public school teachers as well.
Most Catholic schools not only do not have programs for "special needs" children, if a child is a trouble maker (and a Catholic school "troublemaker" is a pretty low threshold) the school can expel them. It is far more difficult to expel a really disruptive student in public school. Unless of course they bring a water gun to school! (sort of a joke, but not really).
David 31etc your comment "If I could make more than 40 dollars an hour w/ a BA I don't know that I would complain" makes no sense. First off 100% of WI public school teachers have at least a BA or BS, your comment implies otherwise. Also average means over all average for all WI teachers this includes teachers with masters, PhD's, teachers who have taught for 3 decades and are at the top step due to seniority and or post undergraduate education. The most recent US public school teacher salaries (2008) has WI ranked 49th in starting teacher salary. The average starting wage for a new teacher in WI was 25,222 a year, well below Iowa's starting salary of 27,284. The average teacher salary for all teachers state wide regardless of seniority or post undergraduate degree is close to 50,000 (although closer to 45,000) and WI is ranked 20th for average teacher salary, but again that include all public school teachers. Furthermore WI public school teachers are required to have at least a BA or BS to enter the field, and WI has some of the most stringent requirements for teachers to renew their initial (5 year) teaching license, if not the most stringent requirements. This hasn't been reported, but it should be to put the average wage in context. Unlike most states where a teacher can graduate from college, and never be required to take a single post graduate college course to renew their license . Wisconsin teacher are required to fulfill PDP (professional development plans) to renew their initial 5 year license. They must take additional post graduate college course to renew their license, and not just one course. As a result most WI teacher don't only have a BA or BS, but have at least a masters degree. If WI's average teacher wage was adjusted for education level they would not be ranked 20th, and would be closer to their 49th ranking for beginning teachers. Also David you must not know any teachers. Regardless of the number of class room hours you don't divide a salary (especially an artificially high average) by the number of class room hours. Most public and private school teachers I know spend almost as many hours outside of class, grading and preparing for class as in class. Using your math a starting teacher makes less than 22 an hour, however if you include the work outside of required class room teaching time that wage is between 11 and 18 an hour depending upon the amount of work the teacher does outside of class. Not a great wage for a college graduate!!!
Since Mr. Hannity called the people that were shouting at Senator Grothman "the Mob" and unruly. What Mr. Hannity did not tell his audience is that Senator Grothman had called them SLOBS on TV (oh, what do you mean that Fox is biased?) I do remember that the Tea Partier were wielding signs of OBama as a Hitler...and now Mr. Hannity is offended that members of the protesters are referring to Gov. Walker as Hitler. My oh my...when the shoe is on the other foot...these right wingers want to call foul. They have created this class divide and now they don't understand that the American people have figured out their agenda and will respond in the next election. They have destroyed the premise that we should all work together. What Repubs want is working together on "their agenda"...not a bipartisan agenda. Hannity and his crew...what a bunch of BIGOTS!
This guy is a flat out liar. As far as the people staying at the capitol it was clean, up kept and people were picking up garbage better than the normal employees. There were cleaning stations, food being offered, and people helping each other. I am proud to be living in Madison Wisconsin right now. I am tired of the lies and the republicans (specifically Scott Walker) trying to make the protesters look bad.
Sorry pal, I've been there. Maybe we have definitions of clean and up kept, but by my standards, it meets neither of your criteria.
Sorry to you pal, I've been there. The seven days I have been there I have witnessed people so quick to pick up garbage and maintain order it would make your head spin. Don't confuse Grothman's elitist arrogance and disdain for the very people he represents for an accurate representation of the conditions. The fact that he may be too good to associate with his constituents (including you) doesn't make the conditions poor. It makes the leadership poor. He represents Wisconsin not the Republican party. He and the Governor have both forgotten that.
Fox News is at it again! Here's a clip form tonights O'Rielly show with reporter Mike Tobin. They are still lying and deceiving people! You've gotta see this. They "spliced" in a clip from some place else to make it seam as though there was a rowdy crowd in Madison Wi. Look closely for the palm trees in the background (I have yet to see a palm tree in Madison). UNBELIEVABLE!! FOX NEWS LIES AGAIN!
Congrats on failing Joanne. And Michael, you were the one calling the governor a liar when he said the capital was dirty. You can't call someone a liar for voicing their opinion on an issue (well, apparently the left can). I've been in the capital before this whole started and during, and there really is no comparison. I prefer to not have the capital smelling like weed, but that's just me.
You and the rest of Wisconsin are my heroes. I live in Oregon and i myself are not in a union but my mother is. I stand with the people and you got alot of Oregonians support in my district anyway. I just wanna say the people of Wisconsin are true Americans and will overcome the Scott walker union crushing agenda and get rid of these wolf in sheep clothing republicans.
I'm in Vancouver and I've driven through Madison once. I just want to say that I'm proud of you and your city too...stay strong!!
I spent the day in Madison last Saturday when over 100,000 people were protesting. I had a discussion with a Dane County sheriff's deputy. He said he has been doing crowd control for 13 years in Madison and these protests have been the most polite and respectful he has ever seen. He was amazed that people even clean up after themselves!
I am an 11 year science teacher in Wisconsin, and never have I felt so proud!
And, Glenn Grothman is my state senator. He is an embarassment, but looks more stupid the more he opens his mouth. The problem is that he really does reprersent his district.
Walker already demonstrated in his conversation with 'David Koch" that he is in Koch's pocket, wanting to start violence to get his bill passed, refuses to negotiate, and thinks up lies and tricks to pass his bill. He also gives tax credits to the rich and instead demands teachers pay more. Even though the teachers agreed to pay more, he does not listen because he is not going to listen. He is out to destroy the unions, he rather demonstrated and said he was out to destroy the unions, he willingly accepted a gift for that time after he destroys the unions and this sick criminal is still a governor? Walker already aired in public that he would lie and promote violence. Since he will do anything, I imagine all the lies about "uncleanliness and those um bullets 'just laying around there' can be attributed to the lying immoral jerk named Walker. This man needs to be impeached. He should be arrested for breaking the law. Now. What a sicko!

All of these Koch bros. state Govenors are sealing thier collective fate to be one term if they make it that far!!
You know the Koch bros opened up an office in Madison in the middle of Febuary with 7 registered lobbyists - wonder why?
I got your "slobs" right here. Thanks for lying about us.
Better than saying "You're f***ing dead."
Can someone tell me why all the complainers aren't showing up with a budget plan that will work for all????? Why the cowards that fled aren't coming up with a budget of there own??? Why the people that fled are still being paid??? Hmmm so many other questions to be answered other than the obvious......
I am proud that I voted for Scott! Walk the walk Walker.... Stand proud.
ignorant.
So you're proud to be a fascist supporter? Wow!
They along with the assembly have come up with a budget plan and it was delivered to the governor. You should be able to find it on the Net, but the bottom line there was no Fiscal Crisis, that was all made up because he has given away in the first month of his office over $120 Million dollars in tax cuts to wealthy Wisconsinites and corporations. This caused us to lose the $124 Million that was to be a surplus at the end of June that would be used to pay the loan payment. But now that Gov Walker has given away all these tax cuts we lose the suplus $$ and he has to come up with a way to make that up in the budget. So in essence HE CREATED THE BUDGET CRISIS ALL FOR PAY BACKS TO HIS CAMPAIGN SUPPORTERS. But he wants the public employees to pay for those tax cuts for the richest 2%, that is NOT a crisis or abuse of collective bargining. Teachers have been taking $$ hits for 10 years on their wages. And this idea of comparing what teachers make vs the public sector, to be fair the Teachers who HAVE TO HAVE A BA AND A LICENSE TO TEACH should only be compared with those in the private sector who have to have a college decree and a license for their jobs, not some middle manager who doesn't have to have a degree nor a license and certificate to do his job. There is a lot of misinformation out there and our the kids in this state who score int he top of their ACTs and SATS compared to other states are the ones who are going to suffer and this will cause our brightest to leave the state for green pastures, so we all suffer.
It's because they know it won't do any good! They would get steamrolled into the mud like the rest of us that are fighting for Democracy! What everybody that defends Mr. Walker fails to see is that teacher pensions aren't paid for by the tax payers and that is the group he is targeting the most! Why? Because they didn't back him and now he is being a petulant child. That and that Mr. Walker seems to think it's his way or the highway...so the brave 14 chose the highway. The people of WI are done having the proverbial wool pulled over their eyes and are standing up for what's right!
They are not presenting their own budget plan because they are willing to go along with Walker's fiscal aspects. Now that I have answered your question how about answering one of mine? Can you be the only Republican to have the courage to admit that the attack on the collective bargaining power of unions is separate from the fiscal crisis and in actuality a plan of the national Republican party to hurt Democratic voters in an effort to gain the White House? Assuming you have the courage to say it out loud, my follow up would be; Acknowledging one's commitment to their political party is appropriate, but, should it rank above or below one's obligation as governor to the people of the state as a whole?
They have Theresa!. From the Wall Street Journal, via Fox in Boston:
They are not cowards, but simply using the only tactic they have to fight the unilateral bill that Walker won't negotiate on.
Their checks are being held, so technically they are NOT getting paid at the moment.
You have so many "other questions." What are they?
To everyone else, matching her anger with vitriol of your own will not help our position. Handle yourselves on forums like we handle ourselves at the Capitol building.
for some reason, the system was not posting my link. click for article HERE
I support our Brothers and Sisters of Wisconsin 100%.
Anyone who believes that a Government, elected of the people, by the people and for the people, who would continuously work so hard to hack away at the working families rights is not representing the true spirit of the position that he/she was elected for... which is to represent the people.
When the banks said, "hey we need alot of money" The Government said "Here is $800 Billion dollars...... TAX PAYERS / WORKING FAMILIES DAMN DOLLARS !!!!!!!!!
When the people of Wisconsin took over the Capitol building they were not asking for anything other than what the constitution states they have a legal right to have.
By the way...... "hey the working families need money too"...... Wonder if the Crooks will be as quick to call a meeting and give the honest working taxpayers some of that $800 Billion F'n dollars back!?????
Proud?? Let me guess white collar with either NO KIDS or all in private school? You are proud to be a socialist?
that was president who gave the money away
your all nazis no i take it back your all nazis on crack
I have been trying to figure out how to describe Walker's aura. It is a very disturbing journey into his soul. The best I can think of is remember the sick police officer in the "Green Mile". He was the one that killed the inmate's mouse and put a dry sponge on the prisoner's head. Think of what made this type of guy tick and the character within him. Although this guy is fiction, his personality and inner workings are the best to describe Walker's aura. It is not a good picture. Walker hides it well by keeping a very 'innocent' look to his face. He fools less and less people with it.
I am appalled and offended at the comments that I have just heard. When the former Senator refered to those camping out in the capitol building as slobs. He said that they are mostly college students or unemployed people looking for a place to "hang out". This is one of the stupidest statements that have ever heard. My husband is an unemployed union electrician and he is not "hanging out" anywhere, he is looking for work and waiting by the phone for the call to come. I am a college student who is also not "hanging out" anywhere because I am working to make ends meet. Anyone who has any sense can see how ridiculous and these people are. Had they ever lost their cushy corporate positions they would learn what it means to want to work.
i guess your the 1% he didnt mention
I think it is time to help them learn. I think it is time we received back our billions of tax dollars that bailed out criminals so that we can balance our budgets. I think Walker must take back any tax breaks he doled out to cronies. I will never understand why we just 'gave' the banks and Wall Street money. Why was it not a loan with the requirement to be paid back in full with interest? Why is it we can bail out a Wall Street worker, but millions who are unemployed get kicked in the rear instead? When is it going to stop and how are we going to stop it?
Solidarity! I refuse to believe the lies of Walker and Fox news. I stand by my fellow American. I refuse to let fascism sneak in and take my country. I refuse to support a man who lies, accepts 'gifts' for destroying the unions, and who would even entertain sending people into crowds to start violence. Children get killed that way. It is not going to be mine.
They should cut the pay of that old fart .after what he said lets pay every one 7.25 and wonder why they need food stamps. You never should have voted republican you get what you wanted Wisconsin ,Indiana,Ohio, and all you other touch by a angel red states wheres your god now when you standing in a food line or work at you friendly wart mart! gooooooo tards!
Theresea i hope they freeze you pay and you loose you job Then really know what its like.Mabey if you lucky you can be a wart mart greater.
It will be like south park
"they took our jeeerbs"
Sen. Grothman had over 2000 protesters agst him and agst the bill this past weekend. He himself has a campaign to have him recalled. He is condesending and his rolling of eyes and truly believes he has support in his community. Well I can tell you he doesn't care about those who don't agree with him as he would not talk with protesters unless they were his protesters, he won't even respond to emails nor phone calls. He is arrogant just like Governor Walker and they both are delousional . He calls teachers and those workers who have cleaned up after themselves in the captial all these weeks, slobs and yet hes had to use taxpayer money to place 8 police officers in front of his office and his constituents have to bascially sell their soul to get in his office? He doesn't have a clue and to claim the Capital Building is just a place for college kids and Teaching assistances is arrogant and showes he hasn't come out of his office to talk to REAL people. They are teachers and their spouses as well as nonunion members who support them in the building exercising their free speech rights, something the GOP in this state would like to see limits on. He wants to see the protestors gone as they are a constant reminder that there those in this state who have had enough with the Bully tactics of the GOP and Governor. I am ashamed to say Sen. Grothman represents my district but he has always disliked public school teachers, librarians ( he supports the banning of books) and school staff and would love to see us all return to the 1950's of Leave it to Beaver where women were seen but not heard. His arrogant attitude toward those who pay his salary is legend and he has to go, which could happen as many GOP members of the community have real problem with this so called "repair" bill. The budget the GOP broke when they gave away $117 million in tax credits but is willing to take away $900 million from our schools, Shameful!
Jody-I'm not a Wisconsin resident, so here's my question for you. It appears Mr. Grothman's arrogance and disregard for the opposition may be a result of his having won re-election in 2008 by about 25%. It would therefore seem a waste of time to try to recall him, and also a waste of time to focus on him in the current battle. Go for the weaker Republican links. Get your fellow protesters who are constituents of those weaker links to give it all they've got. Your guy is hopeless, but the outcome is not dependent on him. He's a jerk, yes, but if you can come out of this victorious, he'll still be a loser.
Kak is right. Only a politician comfortable in his seat would make statements like this.
Also Jody! The estimates for last Saturday's (February 26th) rally were between 70,000 and 100,000. It was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen! That many people and ZERO arrests. And, to think that was almost two weeks after the beginning of this movement!
Just goes to prove that he thinks he's above the people. He's already getting paid by big Corp. what he makes as a Gov. is just a bonus. I hope those he calls slobs don't answer his calls to 911 when he needs them. What a Punk.
I can't believe this stupid arguement about vouchers. Private schools do not want vouchers. They want to have control over who their students are. They want small size classes and barely have the teachers to fill them. If they had to hire more, duh, the cost goes up, and the vouchers only cover sooooo much. When I was in private school, the good teachers left for the public school when they started to have families of their own so they could provide for them on a better salary. The teachers left at the schools were nuns, (which there are none now) or women who worked for a second income for the family. My sister works for the best Catholic High School in town and she does the work of three and makes....about ...maybe 30,000 at the most. They simply haven't thought this through.
Dear Lawrence,
Thank you so very much for helping expose Senator Glenn Grothman for the true "SLOB" that he is!
This is a copy of the email I just sent to the Senator after hearing his disgusting comments on your show...
Dear Senator Glenn Grothman,
I just watched your interview with Lawrence O'Donnell on MSNBC and wish to share my thoughts with you regarding your shameful and disgusting statements regarding the people who are protesting at the capital building in the great state of Wisconsin against the repressive policies of Governor Scott Walker.
You referred to the protesters in the state capital building as despicable "SLOBS" who are defacing the capital and "stinking it up", being "hangers-on" and "unemployed people who are just looking for something to do." It is absolutely deplorable and reprehensible for you to refer to the people of Wisconsin or any state in those words and I sincerely hope that regret your small minded comments and pay a huge political price for your words and thoughts! Name calling and denigrating people who oppose your views is the sign of a weak and inferior intellect! It is you...sir who are the true SLOB!
Nice letter. Just think, the police officers and firefighters that have been in the Capitol building supporting the protesters are among those he referred to as "slobs". I live in Madison, and I know his words are not true.
It's hard to believe that WI people actually voted for this guy. Everything you need to know about him is right there on his face and on every expression he makes while he is talking.
The statement the former senator made was shameful and hurtful that he called the people of Wisconsin slobs and that the unemployed are just looking to hang out, that is disgraceful to all the people across our states. I hope the american people are listening he just let us know how he really feel about the working middle class and unemployed.
Grothman is not a 'former' senator, unfortunately. He is the current State Senate Assistant Majority Leader. However, maybe the voters of West Bend can teach him what it's like to be unemployed and looking for a place to hang out.
Dear Lawrence,
Thank you so very much for helping expose Senator Glenn Grothman for the true "SLOB" that he is!

I wish the media will stop giving Grothman air time, he's turned into a media whore- all he knows is DIVIDE
Are they trying to put their feet in their mouths? It's almost like they are asking to be booted from office. If they keep it up, the only thing they will get is a one way ticket out of the state...not that any other state will have them.
Senator Grothman,
YOU Truely Are The Worst Person In The World.
Sen. Grothman's "slob" comment was outrageous. I suppose he wants us to believe those unemployed slob students he was referring to come the the Capital Building dressed a firefighters, officers, teachers and union members to fool us. Glenn Grothman is the fool.
Grothman's comments were so over the top, so outrageous, and politically so completely stupid...like he and all those reactionaries he's in cahoots with are looking to commit political suicide. (He also said that besides strictly college students "partying," probably some "unemployed looking for a place to hang out."
I hope Lawrence, Rachel and Ed Schulz show this clip over and over...should shock some of the more complacent into reality.
Your words were perfectly spoken...I could not have said it better. Thanks
The beatings will continue until morale improves. -- Captain Bligh
Lets hope these disgusting comments end up on U-Tube so everyone in the world can see that he is the true SLOB!!
The American workers should send Walker and Grothman a thank you card. With the help of Lawrence, Rachel, Ed, and Chris, these two idiots have wakened a sleeping giant that just might put the Tea Baggers to shame. THANKS GUYS.
down with the Baggers and the Republicans that fueled them. They will get their due in 2012....and the numbers prove it. They have gone off on their own agenda..not the agenda of providing new jobs. WHERE ARE THE JOBS THEY PROMISED...where is the legislation for new jobs. Why did the Republican House call for a 2 week vacation only after 6 weeks on the job. Boehner...where are the JOBS?? What are your plans. Do you even have any????
This is where the tea party loses this battle. It is all out in the open what they think of these Nurses, teachers, firefighters, policepeople, and other state employees. The lackof compassion and respect for these college educated people who are trying to earn a decent living was just bolstered by this Senator's ignorance.
America should see how WI really needs their unions. It is in the best interest of the people.
I can't believe some people's children.
