The House just passed a measure to strip Planned Parenthood of its funding. Sponsored by Indiana’s Republican Congressman Mike Pence, the amendment won in a 240-185 vote. Ten Democrats joined the GOP majority, while seven Republicans voted against it.
Realistically, this measure won’t come close to getting through the Democratic-controlled Senate. Lately, whether it’s due to so-called budget cuts or ideological causes, it seems like there’s been an assault on women’s health care rights.
In Texas, lawmakers are specifically targeting abortion procedures. A controversial abortion sonogram bill passed the State Senate this week. Under legislation, a doctor would have to describe details of a sonogram — like the baby’s heartbeat, general development — to a woman before an abortion. Only victims of rape or incest would be able to opt of the talk.
Did lawmakers just take a page from The Onion? This bill could have been ripped from their headline, "New Law Requires Women to Name Baby, Paint Nursery Before Getting Abortion." H/T to Last Word producer R.J. Fried for noticing the similarities. In the spoof, panelists say more states should make decorating a nursery and choosing a baby name required steps before getting an abortion.

Nice use of fearmongering, Lastword. This is the same issue that flops back and forth every time the ballance of power flip/flops.
Tell me, "Why should my tax dollars support a practice I believe to be murder?"
Boy, it's a good thing your tax dollars *don't* support abortion. Under existing Federal Laws taxpayer money cannot be used to pay for abortion except in the cases where the mother's life is at risk.
Now tell me why my tax dollars (extremely much more of my tax dollars) should go to support wars fought under false pretenses or to support corporations that currently make enormous profits with subsidies, or go toward propping up dictators in foreign countries?
Biggest reason isBecause those taxations you mentioned are enumerated powers in the federal constitution. Don't be pissed at me, be pissed at who you voted in.
By the way, if you are speaking about the Hyde ammendment, that only prevents Medicaid from funding abortion.
Nice try. Try again.
Your feeble retort doesn't change anything. Federal funds are not being used to fund abortions. And as for the deceptive unjust war in Iraq, your Constitution waving doesn't excuse the criminal leadership that brought that war to start, and if you want to start a discussion about the lawbreaking that has gone on with that war, we can.
Shame on all of these men. And I am sure most of them voting were men.
Hey, Hambone - it's legal. So is slaughtering cattle. I'm vegan but you don't hear me whining about my tax dollars being allocated toward livestock subsidies, etc. because it is legal.
In response to the Republican-controlled House's attempt to interfere with a woman's reproductive health by defunding Planned Parenthood , why isn't anyone comparing the treatment of women by the Republicans to the treatment of women by radical Islam? Will the Republican assault on women's rights stop only after every woman is required to wear a burqa?
First off, as a vegan you for damn sure would support beef industry subsidies. Subsidies pay ranchers not to produce beef.
Secondly, funding planned parenthood is not an issue of rights, it is an issue of spending tax dollars in a way that a significant portion of the voting public does not agree with. Birth controll via other methods (pill, condoms etc) can be tax funded without paying for selective surgery ie abortion. It's just that planned parent's hoods refuse to do so. hell pay for the damn thing yourself if you feel you need one. They'll set up payment plans.
You are *completely* wrong. PP does *not* use Federal Funds (taxpayer money) for elective abortions. It is against existing Federal Laws for them to do so. Do you have any proof, any at all, that they are breaking this law? Did *anyone* in the GOP offer any proof they were?
What the House GOP members did is deny *all* funding to PP, the funding that *does* go toward birth control and family planning education. It's almost as if they *want* more unwed mothers and abortions.
you are only partly correct on your assertions, jmorris. PP does use federal funds for their operations. Which also includes abortions. The only ban in effect currently is the Hyde Ammendment. Hyde only applies to use of Medicaid funds for abortion.
Why won't planned parenthood restructure so that OB/GYN services, including Birth control can be funded and abortion handle by a dept that answers to GAO?
You can bet if men got pregnant and didn't want the baby it would be A-ok! Also,if men did delivery there would be a coupon waiting for them foe a hysterectomy at a later date!
Carla your assumption like you Logis is wrong. It would not be right for men to murder the unborn either
I have to laugh when I hear Laura Ingraham scream about Planned Parenthood and all the MINORITY babies being aborted -- specifically she named black babies and Hispanic babies. WHY did Ingraham adopt children from outside of our country then? If she was so concerned about all the black babies and Hispanic babies (let alone older adoptable children or children with special needs) -- why didn't she adopt an AMERICAN child? Why didn't she adopt a black child? She will also be the first to champion cutting off any aid for mothers struggling to feed, clothe and house the babies they decided to keep.
Their brown babies are cuter than our brown babies, maybe?
How is it the GOP wants to stop pap smears, mamograms, and women's health care. It must be as Alan Grayson from Florida said last year, The GOP plan is for you to "DIE" quickly! Have children that are unwanted, even in instances where the mother's life is at risk, incest or rape. America, get them out of my health decisions. Give us access to women's health services.
Why Is Dick Army (Freedom Works) always in the back ground. Can't any of these Representatives actually represent the voters.
Why aren’t these Jobs Jobs Jobs Republicans working on creating
Jobs?
because jobs jobs jobs was supposed to be Obammy's domain. These Republicans are for cut spending cut spending cutspending
Maybe they are searching for the Dems of Wisconsin in other states who are hiding!!!
I watch your show almost daily. It's sad that you lacked the strength tonight to show the abortion procedure. I truly feel sorry for the U.S. Representative from California, that she is daily feeling the sorrow of the loss of her baby; but even more, I feel sorry for the baby that she permitted to suffer the loss of a beautiful life. I have had 5 Caesarean sections and am enjoying my children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. I am so very grateful to God for them! IF YOU HAD BEEN ENDOWED WITH WISDOM AND STRENGTH OF CHARACTER ENOUGH TO SHOW THE ABORTION PROCEDURE AND SAVE LIVES, YOU WOULD HAVE SAVED LITERALLY HUNDREDS OF BABIES' LIVES, INCLUDING THE OFFSPRING OF THOSE BABIES. My parents had 13 children, including a baby that was completely helpless from birth. Our brother added countless joys to our lives and made us aware of all our blessings as we helped care for him. Daily, for 26 years, his infectious smile lit up the lives of rooms full of family and friends.
You have no idea why this congresswoman lost her baby and you are assuming that you somehow have the right to decide what is best for another person. You are NOT God! Thank goodness!
Should we not all feel sorry for the unborn baby the congresswoman elected to destroy. Why feel sorry for anyone who elects to murder and unborn child!
I think the people of Wisconsin should:
1. Ask the Governor to take a cut in his salary, give up his state paid healthcare and give up his pension since he is also a public employee
2. Ask all the Republican state senators and congressman to take a cut in their salaries, give up their state paid health insurance and pension
3. Hold a recall election and get rid of the governor they just voted in because he is a liar.
We are rooting for you Wisconsin! Stay strong - don't let the governor who is bought and paid for by right wing billionaires win! Stay strong!!!!
er, are you sure the state reps have pensions?
What part of "we'll take our ball and go home 'cause we're losing" follows rule of law and constitutional procedure?
You should be pissed as hell that those doofs are refusing to do the job they are being paid for.
Not as pissed that the republican doofs (your words) have turned a cost-cutting measure into a political power grab. The unions have agreed to pay what the proposed law stipulates as long as they keep their collective bargaining rights. This should be enough for the law to be amended.
The 14 who skipped town are doing more for the people than the ones who remained home, ready to cripple the unions.
Your post reeks of ignorance, and insensitivity, Peter. You don't know the circumstances under which the congresswoman gave up her baby. If anything, her statements suggest that it was for health reasons or--worse yet--rape or incest. You don't know how old the aborted baby was, either.
doesn't matter how old the baby was--point is that it was an innocent baby and it was given the death penalty for someone else's mistakes
