CBS News' Lara Logan in Cairo's Tahrir Square moments before she was assaulted on Friday.
CBS News announced this evening that its Chief Foreign Correspondent Lara Logan, has left the hospital and returned home after suffering "a brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating" while covering the events in Cairo on Friday. Logan also received a call today from President Obama. But while her colleagues and viewers have expressed an outpouring of love and support, there have been several cases of online attacks against Logan.
Tonight, we'll look at examples of the hatred and talk with Farai Chideya of PopandPolitics.com about the challenges for female correspondents in risky assignments.

Lets hope the wolves give the lady a month or two before they start stalking her for interviews.
PS...do we really need to use the word "sustained"? It only serves to peaked peoples interest. This woman will be hounded until we all hear the sorted details of what happened.
If over 200 men raped and sodimized her I think the word "sustained" doesn't describe the event.
This whole thing sickens me that among a time of victory for the Egyptian people, that an evil element did this. My prayers got to Lara Logan, and all correspondents. You have a dangerous job. May God go with you.
I feel terrible about Miss Logan but anything decent in the US shouldn't be discussed on this blog. The way Lawrence ripped into a sitting Congressman tonight about his personal sleeping habits was disgusting and made this idiot look even more idiotic, if that's possible. I'll be surprised if Comcast allows this drivel much longer.... after all, Comcast would like to make money and this low rated garbage will never achieve a decent sellable audience
Beachblueye: I agree, the "sitting Congressman" is an idiot. No doubt about it, he will sell out middle class America and the unions. Also, I find it odd, you are more irate, about the treatment toward the "sitting Congressman" then you are about the rape and beating of Lara Login.
As for Lara Login, She has sustained an assault to her mind and body. The majority of Islamic people are decent human beings. I am willing to bet my non-existent tax return, these criminals, were Mubarak loyalists. I cannot believe the protesters, who were showing, such respect for journalists, would allow Lara Login to be assaulted, by one of their own. She will heal, she will go on but she will carry the scars, of such a horrendous violence against her, forever.
I couldn't agree more with your comments except for who was asking idiotic questions in an unbeliveably ubtrusive way to this Congressman. I'm positive you won't hear a follow up from Lawrence tomorrow night or any other night. It's unbelievably STUPID.
agree..what is our media hanging around these ISLAM barbarians to begin with!!! GET A CLUE PEOPLE!!! THEY ARE DIRT BAG SCUM...we have to deal with our own issues here at home...they are a HUGE part of our problem...NO MORE IMMIGRANTS..tired of TERORRIST FREELOADING SOCIALISTS trying to abuse our freedoms! NO MORE LEAVE US ALONE!!!
Figman: My brother-in-law was born and raised in Egypt. His wife my sister, nephew and niece ( American born) are of the Islamic faith. They are law abiding, hard working citizens, of the United States. They not only provide jobs for Americans, with their business, they also provide thousands of dollars to charities. Muslims are peace loving, kind individuals. Just like people here in the USA, it only takes a few corrupt people, to give an entire nation a bad name.
You attacked Debbie Schlussel for her comments tonight, which was fair enough, but how did you manage to miss Nir Rosen's tweets? Didn't he fit your narrative?
Of course Larry-the-lizard left out Nir Rosen...Nir's a Progressive Liberal!!
Exactly. There are more libs making negative comments about this story than conservatives. I'm glad that hate-mongering sand-n!gger lost his job.
Also noted how he linked Schlussel as a frequent guest on O'Reily. I watch O'Reily and have never see her on it.
God Bless Lara--she got attacked while doing her job. I sickens me to no end that someone would use this tragic story as a hate piece for political gain against Islam. In every ethnic group there are bad people, not many but a few. This is just another case of a few bad people using an act of violence against a innocent person and should be viewed at that.
My heart goes out to Lara--I hope she can heal and continue to do the awesome job at reporting the news: she is a hero to me for risking her person to give creditable news. Thank You Lara!
All I can say is that Ms. Logan showed more courage, guts, than all the pretty boys and girls at Fox news who are making gazillions of dollars reporting from their glass enclosed offices.
Perrine: A very good point. One wonders why the FOX fruit cakes has a following. Are there that many stupid people in this world? Are there that many misguided, back woods, sycophants, who obviously do not read a paper, book or magazine about history, current events, biographies?
I am thinking of writing Bill O'Reilly and ask him for money to help me, pay off my mortgage. 100 grand would do it and Bill O' uses that for windex, to wipe off all the lips prints from the mirrors, in his home!
God Bless all The Lara Login's in this world.
Please don't hate me for saying this. I am a liberal, Lawrence oDonnel is the man. I love 60 minutes. I've seen Lara Logan reporting while in Afghanistan. I thought, "Beautiful woman who could have easily exploited her looks to obtain an easy life choses to do 60 minutes, a gruelling career, and go to that warzone afghanistan." Huge amount of respect for her just from seeing that assignment.
Here is my issue: with her presence in Egypt she was in a country where all the woman cover their hair. So there she was reporting on the revolution in Egypt. Emotions are strong, raw, unpredictable. So she shows up, this blond beauty with her hair uncovered and reports. Could She have at least covered her hair? You know, when in Rome? I' m not at all saying she deserved what happened to her. She absolutely did not. Would wearing a hajib been too much? Some may respond to me and say hindsight....., but I am 100% sure that had I been a member of her camera crew, I would have suggested she cover up somehow. Beauty is power, and like anything with power, there is responsibility. Spiderman etc. What good is driving a 500 HP Corvette if it has no brakes?
Thank you so much Lawrence for bringing this up on the show it was terrible what debbie schlussel said about the attack on lara. It is horrible that she would use this attack to push her own hateful agenda about Islam when it is a terrible thing that this woman had to endure. Sexual assume is a serious issue all over the world and should never be used as a tool to push personal agenda's. It is an issue that needs to be addressed and taken seriously and shame on Debbie for suggesting that it was a "risk" of the assignment. It was so nice to see this issue addressed on mainstream television. Thank you
I was surprised by the fact that another woman would be amused at another woman being attacked in this way.
The Lara Logan story was strong overall. I have to say that the background pix, particularly the evening gown shots that got the slow once over, were really inappropriate and kind of creepy. At least, that's how it came across. Lawrence - you have standards and I have to believe that this was not intentional. This is such a sensitive subject - your producers should have known better. It's a news and commentary show not a tabloid operation... (I like the show or I wouldn't care enough to comment..)
I saw plenty of Egytian women without hair coverage. She should not have to hide her head. Should male reporters cover their heads ?
While I'm all for civil liberties, I don't think it's a fight that should be made in a country that has yet to recognize women as their equals. It might have helped to cover her head, but then maybe not. I'm just not sure. I wonder if she wasn't singled out (not because of her hair) but because she returned to Egypt after being sent away before. Either way thank goodness for those soldiers and the women who did come to her rescue.
Debbie Schlussel is a high school "mean girl" who would spew this sort of journalistic hate into the public. I am ashamed of a network who calls themselves "fair and balanced" to allow this sort of commentary to be put out over their network. This has nothing to do with politics, it is just evil. Many other reporters and journalists (ABC, NBC, MSNBC) have expressed nothing but respect for Lara Logan, and have expressed deep regret over what happened by a group of evil men. My only comment to this reporting is that Lawrence O'Donnell should have corrected Fari Chideya's use of the word "rape." Sources close to the scene said that there was no rape.
Why are they only expressing deep regret? They should be condemning the actions. but that wouldn't fit the narrative they were pushing about the peaceful protesters. If you recall Ms. Logan and crew were detained, held and questioned the week before by government authorities and she wasn't attacked then.
Debbie speaks the truth..if your an AMERICAN you have no business being in the middle east..they are ALL terrorist scum bags..your asking for it!..MALE FEMALE whatever its aDEATH WISH..they dont care for freedom!
There was NO TRUTH in what Debbie Schlussel spoke! It was evil and vindictive of a journalist who was doing her job to get the truth to us here in America. Ms. Schlussel should be fired for those comments! She is an embarrassment to all American! I hope that she doesn't get Karma for her words!
According to one CBS staff member who was there, reported that while it is true Lara was sexually assaulted and beaten, there was no rape, which I am relieved to hear. But never the less it was a terrible ordeal.
Larry who?
Where I live we only have conseravative talk radio. Rush, Lars Larsen and John Gibson on one station, Beck, Hannity, Laura Ingrahm and Mark Levin on the other. I heard Hannity today using the Lara Logan tradgedy in a "see how they are" manner in regards to the people of the Middle East. He was calling on President Obama to make some kind of public statement. What kind of statement should he make? Most Egyptians aren't ethnically motivated gang rapists. When American troops gang raped a 14yr old Iraqi girl, murdered her and her family, then burned their house down, would it have been appropriate to condemn all Americans in general? Everyone wants to fan the flames so I just threw something else on the fire. Would it be helpful to have a discussion on which is the most violent gang rapingest nation of all? I didn't think so. Gotta run...
The attack on Ms Logan should serve as a warning on what to expect from followers of Islam. Google 'rapes in Sweeden' and see how the followers of this religion treat women. It's disgusting to listen to panaelists talk about adversity and inclusion.
It is Islamic MEN who have corrupted Islam to keep women under their thumbs. Muslim women living in northern Europe - Norway, Sweden - are fair game for Muslim male rapists if they happen to be walking alone at night (google it!). Koodos to the 20 Egyptian women who bravely waded into the mob of 200 to rescue Lara.
How ironic that following your revelation of the disgusting, yes "evil", remarks made about this tragedy by commentators from the right that Piers Morgan had a program dealing with thousands of rapes and other kinds of sexual assaults on both woman and men in the U.S. military a major problem weakly addressed by the Secretary of Defense or the Services.
See:
Violent beasts are everywhere and they are us. "Let he who has no sin throw the first stone."

I'm really getting tired of the nonsense that takes up so much of O'Donnell's show lately. Also getting tired of the "Have you stopped beating your wife?" tactics with guests he doesn't agree with. I turned to another channel tonight for the first time since the show started in September '10. I hope it won't be the last time.
I think the media should stay the hell out of everyone's business. If she wasn't there she would be just fine. The media creates many of the problems it gets into.
I can't believe the response's I've seen,to blame this woman,or imply she wasn't raped,is just about as low as you can get. This woman was doing her job, true the men that leave where not as brave as her,she felt the story was worth the risk's.That is what a good reporter does. You who are so hateful, against anyone who disagree's with your way of thinking,Just like FOX,you follow in line like little puppies ,I know they are getting very rich, what is your excuse.Like Beck, the CHRISTIAN,if that's christian, everything Iearned in catholic school, was wrong. To me love thy neighbor,do good to others, live and live,BE KIND TO OTHER IN TIME OF TROUBLE,is what it mean's to be Christian. How would you like your daughter, sister, mother,or anyone you loved,or cared about, being treated in this manner.
I
Thank you donna. I just read an article on other american female journalists like Lara Logan who have had to deal with sexual assaults while trying to report the news. They fear reporting it because they might lose their positions to go and report on the stories in other countries. These journalists said that some times these assaults come not only from nationalists from other countries, but from (wait for it...) other colleagues too. These armchair critics don't have the guts to do the job that many of these women do.
Larry: Like your show and your stance on matters. But I take issue with your treatment of the Florida Congressman for sleeping in his office. You beat the manoverly and aggressively for something that I would do in his place. He shows a respect for money that I want in my politician. It is not as though the space would be rented nightly to some other person if he had not been occupying the couch. you know, he could be residing on C Street! I hope that this is the only time I will see such unfairness from your otherwise august desk. Thank You
Larry: I like your show and your take on matters. But I take issue over your beratement of the Florida Congressman for sleeping in his office. He was doing what I might well do in his place. It is not as though he prevents the Govt from renting the space to some other wayfarer-- if he weren't on that couch. I felt sorry for him and wanted him to tell you what for. I tronlyust this was an anomaly on your part--frankly, I thought you had torn a page from an O'Reilly rant. The man was acting frugally--as I want all pols to behave in these scant times. He could have set himself up on C Street!! I trust I will not hear such meanness from your otherwise august desk again. Thank You.
Larry, there you are kissing Ann Coulter's ass. She said that more reporters should be locked up. She's white trash in the same family as O'Reilly, Rush, Beck, Hannity, etc. Are you looking to date her? You gave that congressman a real hard time about sleeping in the capital, while Coulter spends all her spare time spreading poison.
I hope that it is now clear to all that the best thing we as a nation can do is quit being the world police, quit sending woman reporters to countrys that dont respect our nation, our people, our politcal views, and our freedoms of choice. It is a shame that this happened to the cbs reporter,I hope she finds the inner strength to overcome such a horrible act.WE AS A NATION NEED TO FIX OUR OWN PROBLEMS AND STAY TRUE TO OUR ALLIES! IT IS OUR PEOPLE WHO ARE IN A MESS WITH ALL OF THE UNCONTROLLED SPENDING BY BOTH PARTIES,THIS ADMINISTRATION AND ALL THE ONES BEFORE.REMEMBER THEY WORK FOR US!!!
Debbie Schlussel is a low-life. Her comments were the most despicable hate speech I've read from these right-wing pudits seeking to make a splash with an idiot audience. Incomprehensible hatred. She should be stalked by every raped and abused woman in the country. Freedom of speech comes with consequences and responsiblity, which Ms. Schlussel apparently knows nothing.
I wouldn't want to see her raped, but I hope somehow she grows a conscience, retracts her statements.
Schlussel apparently doesn't realize that every woman assumes that "risk" by getting up in the morning. How can someone like Schlussel look in a mirror? Despicable!
