Michelle Obama
Later in tonight's program (after more serious matters) Lawrence looks at the heat First Lady Michelle Obama is catching after calling Charlotte, NC a place for "great barbecue" in an email discussing the city playing host to the 2012 Democratic National Convention. Seems some North Carolinians — while proud of their state's reputation for tasty BBQ — don't consider Charlotte the place to find it. And some conservative critics are going even further, questioning Mrs. Obama's promotion of barbecue while leading the campaign against childhood obesity.
Is there any meat to the complaints or are critics full of smoky, hot air?

Dana Milbank? Really????? man am i sorry i popped over to msnbc 10 min early for rachels show.
I MISS Keith. Lawrance your show was ok, but Dana Milbank???? i thought better of you.
It's Kansas City, MO that is known for BBQ-not KCK
Geez, she was just trying to be nice. Why does absolutely everything require comment?
Having eaten a half rack of brown sugar dry rub ribs today at lunch at 12 bones (the restaurant in Asheville ) that Michelle Obama was talking about, I can attest that this is the best BBQ in the country, not just in NC. I've eaten Lexington BBQ, and it's good, but a totally different thing. Its chopped shoulder. These are on the bone. I've eaten BBQ in Texas, Alabama , Tennessee , Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. None compare with the 12 Bones version. The President ate there while he campaigned in Asheville, and he brought Michelle here for a vacation last year.
We are hoping that they retire here in 2016, because they are nice folks.
Charlotte has NOTHING to compare. They are just jealous, and they don't deserve good BBQ because they are too snooty to appreciate it.
The Barbecue Wars................immortal, aren't they?
A fine BBQ is a mighty pleasing thing is the eyes of the Lord, for Blessed is he who can Wield with great Deftness the holy Dance of Heat Meat and Seasoning! Forever shall God smile upon the THEE who can throw down the Ribs of Righteousness! Let NO-ONE Gainsay the the Power and Glory of a Proper BBQ!
Testify Sister Michelle! And be Silent You Ungodly Detractors, For You Know NOT of What You SPEAK!
Halleluia, brother!
I believe the old Spiritual says it well:
Who's that yonder, dressed in black? Must be the hypocrites, their comin' back! Sit down Sister! I can't sit down! Sit down Sister! I can't sit down! Just got to (barbeque) Heaven, gonna look around!
My memory of Charlotte BBQ is of meat buried in sauce. I've been spoiled by Big Bob Gibson's over the past few decades. In my youth in the 'Burgh we had sloppy joe's, which were similar. Of course this was between halves of UNC meeting Duke in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, so the focus wasn't on the food.
Because of her positive message and rather high ratings the right is pouncing on
this like a starving dog on some great BBQ in NC!!! With all of our problems they
continue to stoke the theme of mistrust. I can't take them seriously and feel
nothing but disgust for the people who do.
BBQ ??? Keep it on the food channel. So sad!!!!!!!
It wouldn't have mattered what she had said............they criticize her for everything!
Seriously? People are complaining because... the First Lady made a comment about barbecue?
Unemployment, wars, terrorist threats, bad economy, etc... and the only thing the Rethuglicans can do is gripe about Michelle Obama's food commentary?
Gosh golly gee willickers, if those self-same "conservative critics" are so upset about barbecue vs childhood obesity, then why don't THEY come out and make a public speech against barbecue? And KFC? And McDonald's? And the fat-laden/sugar-laden/salt-laden American diet that the businesses promote to keep America's children obese?
Hypocrites are funny when they speak, aren't they?
That may be true in America ,but i invite the good first lady to Kenya where the art of berbeque started !
God am I glad she did not make a comment about NASCAR
Michelle rocks...
Not a big barbeque fan, but if I ever get to Charlette NC, I will certainly try it--with a lite beer and lean meat, a little coleslaw, surely won't kill my diet.
Good grief, the RRRRWW are just nuts. Michelle Obama is not telling the US they have to drink three diet drinks a day and eat an egg white!
