Lawrence O'Donnell joined the TODAY Show this morning to comment on President Obama's new Press Secretary Jay Carney, and Sarah Palin's "WTF" moment.
Of Carney, Lawrence said "everyone on the inside thinks this is as good a pick as you could possibly do at this point." And that while Carney has asked hard questions in the press room as a reporter, Carney will soon experience the intense hot stage of answering questions.
In the case of outgoing Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, Lawrence said inner circle shake-ups within the administration are "standard" at the two-year mark. "These are incredibly difficult jobs."
Lawrence also commented on Sarah Palin's "WTF" criticism of the president's State of the Union. "She has struggled with the sounding presidential thing. The lack of civility? No one else has been that way except Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann. There's been a bipartisan effort to make things work more smoothly in the Senate, and those two are out of tune with what everyone else is doing, at least for now."
Meredith Vieira also asked Lawrence about Meghan McCain calling Rep. Michele Bachmann "a poor man's Sarah Palin" on Wednesday's Last Word. Lawrence pointed out that McCain isn't the only Republican critical of Sarah Palin. "It's a dangerous time for Palin," he told Vieira. "Her stock cannot go up."

Her calling the first lady's plan stupid - you know the one to help American kids loose the fat"- aint gonna get it done....When mommie grizzley can come up with a plan - perhaps we can listen, but she is incapable of doing that, she wants to cause division - hate and discontent and make money, but most importantly, to get that black guy out of office. Thats it, that's what she's about and we all know the deal already - she's a raceist and so are the people who follow her droppings - that's the stuff bears leave in the woods.
In response to Ms. Jenkins -- I have watched Sarah Palin's Alaska and Kate Gosselin was a guest. Not Tim Pawlenty or even Glenn Beck, but Kate Gosselin and her 8. So I'm afraid I'm not misguided nor misinformed, just commenting on the reality show Ms. Palin put her name on. Sorry if this offends you. But appearing on shows like that, with personalities like Kate Gosselin, and using comments like WTF when discussing the State of the Union does not make Ms. Palin appear statesmanlike. It does, however, make her very accessible to the demographic that buys her books, and so I applaud her as a smart marketer.

One thing about President Reagan, he was (as Peggy Noonan once said) "hardwired for politeness." He would never spin out in a rage and indulge in the vitriolic name calling that today's brand of angry conservatives have exhibited on this board. He was too genial, too respectful. That was how he managed to earn the undying respect and loyalty of even those Americans who didn't agree with him. He was the very definition of statesmanlike. Sarah Palin and some of her more hostile supporters could learn a great deal from revisiting The Gipper in both style and substance.
