Not a bad speech. Was able to balance success, problems and solutions. I think it was a good way to start the next legislative session by stating that he is willing to work with both sides of the aisle. I hope that it can keep everyone focused so that we can get something done in the next session.
I LOVED the speech. And he did sound like JFK, who always talked about what we can be. Inspiring. Very inspiring. A president I am so proud that we elected to lead us, to teach us, to guide us. To be responsible. To do things differently. Competently.
Loved it.
Pat--
Me too.
For all of the rhetoric out there from both political parties...this President talked about working together...and I loved it. I don't mind having good and mutually respectful conversations with Republicans about ideas to fix America's problems...in fact, I'm usually surrounded by Republicans and sometimes we do have these conversations.
I insist that these conversations DON'T start with insults, assumed lack of patriotism or hyper-partisan rhetoric....either from me or from them.
Even on Newsvine, our conversations have to be realistic and offer solutions. If we allow the hurling of insults...we are just wasting our time and we might as well NOT be here at all.
I'm so rhetoric weary that I occasionally take extended breaks from both television "news" and online blogs...that's when I re-discover peace. I'm hoping we can change the way we treat each other (as family instead of enemies) and make our conversations worth having.
Except he didn't mention,
"Tonite we will probably hear a lot about Iraq & Afghanistan. (nope, not much, we are still winning apparently) I do hope he talks about gun control. It's vital that we get this under control, now. (nope)
And of course jobs. (well he did mention this a lot)
I hope he recognizes Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. (nope) They did a great job and helped the President tremendously during his first two years."
Which was what you hoped he would say in an a pre speech blog. What did progressives really get out of the speech? Every progressive bone was followed by a moderate - conservative bone. It was a good speech but not if I was a progressive, not really.
Pete--
My hubby is military and did his tour in Afghanistan. Like the drawdown in Iraq, the drawdown in Afghanistan will take time. There is NO logistical way to just cross our arms and blink Bewitched style and make all of the troops and equipment suddenly appear back in America. There is a timeline for this to happen, so how would talking about it in the speech help? The point of the speech was to speak of our longterm future.
Gun Control changes would have a difficult time making it out of the REPUBLICAN controlled House. This isn't President Obama's fault, he didn't elect them....people in various states did.
I'm not a conservative and I thought it was an excellent speech. Welcome to the realistic middle of both parties.
And we still have not drawndown from Iraq so I guess your right it does take time. :)
Well...I just listened to the SOTU and I'm shocked at the positive picture he painted. I'm 55 years old, my job eliminated, pre-existing health condition (COBRA will be at least $600 per month - which I won't be able to pay); I spent quite a while today on the internet looking for countries I can move to where I would have a hope of being able to afford to live. He and I....hell, ALL OF WASHINGTON, we live in two totally different countries. I tear up when I think about how lucky he is to live in his America. I have NO FAITH in the future. Really, why should I? Seriously, what, if anything, can/will be done in time to save me? My generation is doomed as Americans.
Kathryn--
I'm honestly sorry to hear of your recent problems and I'm hoping things will improve for your in spite of your pessimism about it.
thanks for not airing Michele Bachman's 'response' to SOTU.
Wow great speach, it gave me a thirill down my leg I have never heard it before! Just kidding! WHat a joke, he is telling us now the "if a bill crosses his desk with pork in it he will veto it" He should have said "stating tonigt" I'm sure he dissapointed O'Donnell becaucue he didn't takle gun contol like he wished, oh wel I'm sure he will be swooning over him like his boyfriend Chris Mathews! This guy is an empty suit like every one thought before the election, you libs will follow him over the cliff! Good luck fools!
Your first sentence made me realize that I shouldn't take your comment seriously.
That's right, personally attack people instead of making a valid point here.
It is obvious you had your opinion before the election and have gone to great lengths to maintain it since then.
So I ask you...WHY ARE YOU HERE?! Do you just come into these threads to snipe, insult people and make empty comments? Does it make you feel better?
Loved Obama's speech, but disliked listening to Adam Green's comments about it almost as much as Bachmann's rebuttal. That guy makes me feel bad about being a fellow progressive.
L.O. - You said tonight that Ryan's Medicare plan would provide vouchers for seniors to buy insurance in a market that doesn't exist. So if a voucher market was created for seniors (instead of Medicare) the insurance markets would not respond by creating products to sell? I'm for single payer, man, but all too often in your partisan zeal you make NO SENSE! Don't try so hard to make your opponents evil that you make the rest of us progressives look stupid.
No gun control Lawrence, is Obama now part of the problem as you said he would be if he didn't mention the subject? If Chris Matthews is correct that the President will have a special speech on gun control at a later date...TBD... I suppose, and its as good as his pledge to close Gitmo...well then I guess I wouldn't hold my breath. But you and Chris are welcome to.
Pete--
Do you honestly believe that the President mentioning gun control would make ANY DIFFERENCE in the current laws on gun control?
You and I BOTH know that the NRA is quite powerful in the House and Senate...just like the oil companies and the health care industry...and particularly with one political party.
The President decided to PICK his battles. I think it was a speech based in reality. I know that's hard for a lot of us to deal with, since we all want our pet issues handled...but that's how reality works.
Tell that to the gun control advocates (even those at MSNBC) that have been clamoring for two weeks about having it in the speech. They seem to think it will make a difference.
I agree it won't go anywhere but they did and LO specifically looked in the camera and made the above mentioned pledge. Just wondering if he was serious or just looking for ratings playing tough for progressives?
Pete--
I like Lawrence O'Donnell. I even like him better than Olbermann and it's fine with me that he took Olbermann's spot.
However...unlike some of those who consider television pundits to be news reporters, I know the difference.
O'Donnell is a television pundit...and readily claims to be so, unlike the "news" reporters on another channel. Those of us who watch know we are receiving an opinion. In Olbermann's case over the past few years, I have sometimes disagreed with him. I'm sure that will happen over time with O'Donnell as well.
So Pete...if your point is that ratings matter...you're right. If your point is that those who watch are drooling catatonic morons...you're wrong.
oops double post!
Great speach however with little genuine substance. Mr. oboma continues to speak inovation and our heritage of inovation without giving praise to the worlds four greatest inventors. You know youve got the most inovation retardive president in history when the worlds top inventor has no investors customers or usable patent system (disgusting). The black hole in invention he is beligerantly burning will haunt mankind for centuries to come.
