An emotional scene that had some of our Last Word staffers tearing up today – President Obama signed the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” Act of 2010, ridding the ban on gays serving openly in the military.
Obama spoke to a crowd of military servicemen and women, Congress members, and gay rights advocates, cheering, “Yes, we can!” Repealing the ban was one of the President's campaign promises to gay Americans in 2008, and although the transition is likely to take months, today was certainly “ a good day.” Click play to hear the President's remarks earlier today.

It's a start. it's a very good start.
Now if we could just get government out of the marriage business altogether, and into the civil union business where it belongs, we could clear the next hurdle on the path to equal protection under the law.
