All dads can be embarrassing. When the biggest pop star of the moment very publicly rags on your dad, that ups the ante of wanting to crawl in a cave and die.
Not Meghan McCain. She says she doesn't feel "uncool" even after Lady "Meat Dress" Gaga criticized her father, Senator John McCain, for his stance on Don't Ask, Don't Tell. Meghan also disagrees with her dad on this issue.
However, on the show last night, she told Lawrence, "[Lady Gaga] was not effective" in getting the message out. "Unfortunately, she's an entertainer and a very avant garde one, she said. "I don't think that farmers in Midland America are necessarily going to be listening to her on this issue."
We should note, Lady Gaga has more than 6.5 million followers on Twitter, more than the freaking President of the United States. People are paying attention.
"I like Lady Gaga," said McCain. "I would like her to sing me 'Paparazzi' and I'll go to her concerts. I just don't want her to yell at my dad anymore."

Lawrence: You were way too easy on Meghan. Lady Gaga is a US citizen and is as entitled to speak her mind as Meghan is. The only reason you had Meghan on your show is because of her dad; she has no more merit or standing to make public opinions than Lady Gaga. What is her background? Her education? She has a bachelor's degree in Art History, so that makes her qualified to comment on Don't Ask Don't Tell, but Lady Gaga actually has made a name for herself (rather than ride her father's coat tails) so she is not qualified? Lawrence, I know you spent years in DC, but please don't act like a DC insider when you interview people!
Robin! I love it. You are so very right and stated the facts very well. The same goes for Dick Chaney's daughter by the way. These people come into the politics, raise their kids on the backs of the taxpayers, stay in D.C. until they die and then we are stuck with their kids making their living off of going on the circuit for life? What is wrong with us for falling for this game?
Where's your audio podcast? Everyone else has an audio podcast. Do I really have to navigate this baffling series of tubes to watch your show. I don't even want to watch it, I just want to listen to it. Some of us are busy (or lazy) and have important things to do with our eyes (play tower defense games). I'm sick and tired of the open prejudice your show has against the lazy. So make amends and throw me a lazy pride parade (which its likely I'd nap through) or make with the audio podcast.
I noticed there is an option to subscribe to this blog via RSS.....I have so many news sites I think of RSS as more "efficiency" than "laziness" :)
I couldn't agree with Piato more! Please post an audio podcast ASAP
Ms. McCain tells us to listen to the so-called political insiders on this issue: academics, professional politicians, blahblahblah.
We citizens in a democracy have an obligation to remain informed and engaged. That is OUR JOB for the privilege of living in a free democracy, and enjoying the rights we now take for granted. Lady Gaga, who, yes, is capitalizing on her fame and popularity to focus on this issue (even though she was very subdued on SB1040 when she played in AZ), is a CITIZEN and is doing HER JOB.
If anything, Senator McCain should be questioned more rigorously for why he has so blatantly doubled back on his earlier statements and has inexplicably reversed his position on DADT. That is NOT a sign of integrity!
I enjoyed Ms. McCain's interviews on other shows, but this time I have to shake my head.

If there is an absence of voices which appeal to the voters of "middle america", that shouldn't take away from the voice which most appeals to other demographics which are equally important in this huge and growing country of ours.
If anything, Senator McCain should be questioned quite rigorously for why he has so blatantly doubled back on his earlier statements and has inexplicably reversed his position on DADT. That is NOT a sign of integrity! I do hope she doesn't feel the need to own his actions and defend his indefensible results on this issue.
I enjoyed Ms. McCain's interviews on other shows, but this time I have to shake my head. She has restored some of my faith that there are still sensible people who identify with the old-school GOP, but I totally disagree with her on this. And I would never kill animals for fashion (fur or meatwise). :)
oh noo, sorry for the duplicate comment....a newbie to msnbc.
Ah Hmm. Meghan, when you step in to defend your daddy all the time and try telling people what they can and can't say about him, you just highlight the fact he is old and getting senile. You don't want attention on his feebleness, you want him to look like a big boy who can still speak for himself. Consider this next time he says or does something stupid and you want to jump in and stop people from commenting on it.
Raven, I am advocating to limit the terms of these people. If the president is limited to 2 terms, why are we electing these people until they die in wheelchairs?! We, the people, are so stupid. I want them to have to figure out how to struggle through life on the laws they have enacted. And I want their kids to have to pay for their own education the way mine had to! TWO TERM LIMIT is my mantra! They we don't have to look at the Meagans and fossils in D.C.
And a mental health exam before they take office, so we don't have anymore senile Ronald Reagans in office. He had to be protected at his second inaugeration because his Altzheimers was out for all to see.
